History of Turkey
Ancient times
- a lot of important empires (the Hittite Empire, the Macedonian Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine
Empire, the Mongol Empire)
Medieval history
- the migration of Turkic tribes towards Anatolia
The Seljuk Empire and the Ottoman Empire
- was created in 11th century, medieval empire that controlled huge area stretching from Hindu Kush to
Anatolia based on Turko-Persian tradition
After the collapse of Seljuk Empire, its successor the Ottoman Empire became one of the most important
empires in the whole history. The Ottomans conquered Constantinople and took over Byzantine Empire
under the rule of Mehmed II.
They were at odds with the Holy Roman Empire, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Persia nad Portugal.
Later on, it entered the WWI. on the side of Central Powers.
Declaration of Turkey
Following the WWI, in this area the civil war broke out between the republicans led by Mustafa Kemal
Ataturk and monarchists. His activities led to the international recognition of the sovereignty of the newly
formed Republic of Turkey as the successor state of the Ottoman Empire. The republic was officially
proclaimed in 1923 with new capital of Ankara.
Modern history of Turkey after WWII
In WWII, Turkey remained neutral country. Following WWII, Turkey joined the Marshall plan and de facto
became the western-oriented country. In 1952 acceded to NATO and was involved in the conflict in
Cyprus since the 1970‘s. After liberalization of economy in the 1980‘s, it has spotted stronger economic
growth and political stability. It is a candidate state for joining the EU.
Economy of Turkey
Currency: Turkish Lira (₺) (TRY)
Trade organizations: G-20 major economies, OECD, EU Customs Union,
WTO, ECO, BSEC
One of the largest upper middle-income partners of the World Bank Group
(WBG).
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $ 799.54 billion, Turkey is the 17th largest
economy in the world.
Per capita income in the country has nearly tripled to over $10,500.
*Turkey’s agriculture sectors
Turkey's largely free-market
economy is increasingly
driven by its industry
and service sectors,
although its traditional
agriculture sector still
accounts for about 25%
of employment.
An aggressive privatization program has reduced state involvement in
basic industry, banking, transport, and communication.
The Turkish economy retains significant
weaknesses:
Turkey's relatively high current account
deficit, uncertain commitment to
structural reform, and turmoil within
Turkey's neighborhood leave the
economy vulnerable to destabilizing
shifts in investor confidence. Turkey
also remains overly dependent on
often volatile, short-term investment to
finance its large current account
deficit.
