The focus of German I is communication through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Activities will include individual and group work, presentations and interpretation of reading. Grammar will be taught to support and enable the student to communicate in German. Students will also gain knowledge and understanding of the German culture and history, its comparison to our culture and its place in today’s global economy. In German I, the focus is on the self and the student’s surroundings and expressing those ideas. Students planning to study German should plan to study for a minimum of two or three years beginning no later than the 10th grade. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS AND PERFORMANCE TASKS Following the Understand by Design format, we have added Essential Questions and Performance Tasks to this curriculum. By adding Essential Questions, we are striving for students to reach a deeper understanding of the material in each course and thus not only retain the information, but also be able transfer the knowledge to different situations as needed. The performance tasks are written to provide real world application of the material. Therefore, where noted, the performance tasks must be the assessment used for that particular section. Complete copies of each UbD unit are available from the department supervisors upon request. 3 of 9 GERMAN I CP CURRICULUM SHS 2009 Timeline Essential Questions Content Standards/Skills Assessments/Performance Tasks Resources September 2008 How can I competently communicate important information about myself to others?
