SIDE teachers and specialist staff will guide students/supervisors in connecting to and using the online technologies. However, technical support is the responsibility of the partner school. ■ What ICT resources do schools require to support SIDE students? French: Certificate II ■ An internet connected computer with microphone headset is the main requirement (students are encouraged to purchase their own laptop and headset). Centra is the Department of Education’s webconferencing application. It allows the use of voice, video and shared online workspaces between teacher and students. It is a “live” application where teaching happens in real-time. Participants require access to an internet-connected computer and a headset with microphone. ■ What is a Moodle classroom? Moodle is a 24/7, secure, online learning management system consisting of individual course “websites”, accessible by students whenever required. ■ How do schools get started in Centra and Moodle? Once a student is enrolled with SIDE, login details are generated and given to the student by their course teacher(s). Both Centra and Moodle may be accessed through the SIDE website. Partner schools may need to provide technical support to install Centra software on each computer. Students can access these tools from their home computers. ■ DoE’s standard operating environment (SOE) or equivalent, which includes applications such as Acrobat® Reader® and Microsoft® Office. ■ Access to a printer, scanner and data storage. ■ Software that allows the creation of PDF files is also recommended. ■ Special requirements for Japanese The study of Japanese through SIDE requires East Asian font support. This is not generally installed by default and must be enabled before the student commences. Schools should contact their panel integrator technician or CRM for assistance. ■ Need to know more?
