Upper Class - Pharaoh and Government Officials
PRODUCT:
Double Crown
You will create a life-size Double Crown like the one that King Menes would have worn. You
may use any materials you want, but your final product must include all of the following:
1) Be sturdy enough to be worn on your own head
2) Be red and white like the original Double Crown
3) Include the cobra and the curlicue
*optional – decorate your crown with jewels
Use the information sheet “The Three Crowns of Egypt” from class notes to make it realistic in
design. You may also do an internet search for images using the phrase “Egyptian double
crown by King Menes.”
You may create your own design or you may use the directions sheet attached to help you.

Upper Class - Priests
PRODUCT:
Sarcophagus with Mummy
You will create a series of coffins that encase a wrapped mummy of a Pharaoh. You may use
any materials you want, but your final product must include all of the following:
1) 3 coffins – an outer sarcophagus of “stone,” an inner one of “wood,” and the innermost
one of “gold”
2) Inside the smallest one, include a wrapped mummy and amulets for the Pharaoh soul’s
journey into the afterlife
3) Decorate the outside of the largest “stone” coffin with hieroglyphics
Use the information sheet on “Mummification” to make the mummy realistic in design. You
may do an internet search for hieroglyphic images using the phrase “Egyptian hieroglyphic
symbols.”
You may create your own coffin design or you may use the directions sheet attached to help
you. Hint: if you use the attached “Series of Boxes” directions, you can use gray construction
paper for the “stone,” brown for the “wood,” and yellow for the “gold.” You may also change
the paper sizes to make it bigger!
You may create your own mummy design or you may use the attached paper-mache directions
sheet.
SOCIAL CLASS:
Middle Class – Scribes and Artisans
PRODUCT:
Paper Mache Cartouche
Definition of cartouche – an oval or oblong Ancient Egyptian ornament which contains
hieroglyphic inscriptions expressing names of royal or divine people.
You will create a paper mache cartouche for a Pharaoh or a member of his family. You may use
any materials you want to decorate the cartouche, but your final product must include all of the
following:
1) Use the recipe attached for “How to Make Recycled Paper” (ask your teacher for a
piece of window screen used in step 3)
2) Be 6-8 inches long
3) Be thick enough/sturdy enough to hold from the bottom and have it stand up straight
4) Contain the name of a real Egyptian Pharaoh or the name of his/her family member in
real Egyptian hieroglyphics
5) Decorate the cartouche with a border and colors
*optional – decorate your cartouche with fancy materials
Use the information sheet “Hieroglyphics” from class notes to make it realistic in design. You
may also do an internet search for images using the phrase “Egyptian Cartouche.”
Use the attached hieroglyphics pages to write the royal name. REMEMBER to use the symbol
associated with the SOUND, not the letter!!!
SOCIAL CLASS:
Lower Class – Farmers and Peasants
PRODUCT:
Pyramid
You will create a 3-dimensional pyramid similar in design to one that was built for an Egyptian
Pharaoh. You may use any materials you want (EXCEPT FOOD), but your final product must
include all of the following:

The base must be at least 8x8 inches, but no more than 10x10 inches
The base can be either a 3-sided triangle or a 4-sided square
Build your pyramid on a sturdy platform
Show the inside of the pyramid by choosing at least 2 of these: rooms/chambers,
mummy’s tomb, amulets for the mummy’s afterlife, hieroglyphics on the walls
*optional – decorate the platform with the Nile River, dessert shrubs, or anything you
want that was realistic to Egypt’s scenery
Use the information sheet “Pyramids” from class notes to make it realistic in design. You may
also do an internet search for images using the phrases “Egyptian Pyramid Design” and “Inside
Egyptian Pyramids.”
You may create your own design or you may use ideas from the pictures shown in class of
previous student projects.
