Balsam Fir 12-18”
Balsam Fir: Balsam fir is the most cold-hardy and
aromatic of all firs. It normally grows to a height of 60 feet.
The tree is one of America's most popular Christmas trees.
This tree is a major food source for many mammals and
birds. The soils on which balsam fir grows range from silt
loams developed from lake deposits to stony loams derived
from glacial till. Fir will grow, but comparatively slowly, on
gravelly sands and in peat bogs.

American Chestnut: (Castanea dentata) a large tree
native to eastern North America. Before the species
was devastated by the chestnut blight, it was one of
the most important trees through-out its range.
Although there are now few mature trees within its
natural range there are hundreds of large (2 to 5 ft
diameter) trees outside its range, in Northern Lower
Michigan.
Chestnuts are fast growing and require 2 trees
within 200 ft for pollination. They need sunshine and
moderately acid, well-drained sandy loam. Morning
sun is better than afternoon sun, which can cause
frost checking in winter (making an opening for the
blight fungus). Avoid known frost pockets, wet spots,
and limestone based or heavy clay soil.
We will be selling a limited quantity and do not
guarantee success of the tree. We feel they are worth
taking a risk because of their value for humans and
wildlife alike.

well-drained soil in full to part sun. Prefers moist,
peaty or sandy, acidic soils, but tolerates a wide range
