Hoffman's story and honors the brilliance and beauty of Tchaikovsky's score. Set in the present day amidst a fusion of contemporary music and 'youtube culture' references with references with old-world magic, A Culture Shock Nutcracker will entertain and delight audiences of all ages. ACT 1: SCENE I It’s a festive Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum’s house as the annual celebration is well underway. Several generations come together in harmony as the DJ plays everyone’s favorite Jams. ACT 1: SCENE II A mysterious guest arrives, dressed in vibrant purple attire, spellbinding the guests with his energetic presence! It is Godfather Drosselmeyer, a toymaker known for his fantastic creations – specifically, his lifelike mechanical Dancing Dolls! The Stahlbaum children are given their gifts, and Drosselmeyer presents Clara Stahlbaum with a wooden Prince Nutcracker. Fritz, Clara’s pest of a younger brother, is more enchanted with what she receives than with his own gift. He grabs the Nutcracker and accidentally breaks it. Drosselmeyer repairs the doll and ‘suggests’ that Clara rest by the tree. The party continues as she slips into a deep sleep. ACT 1: SCENE III Clara awakens in a dream-state to find her home magically transformed, turning the Stahlbaum’s living room into a Battle Zone. The Rats infest, the Nutcracker and his Army retaliate, and we meet the Rat Queen. She is the one responsible for cursing the Prince, turning him into the wooden doll. Clara’s belief in her Doll Prince, combined with his unparalleled skill, leads to the defeat of the Rat Army. The curse is broken, and the Nutcracker returns to his human Princely form. Drosselmeyer’s magic whisks them off on a celebratory adventure. ACT 1: SCENE IV Drosselmeyer guides Clara and her Nutcracker Prince through the enchanted forest to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Palace for a celebration in their honor. En route, they meet a benevolent Snowman and his Snowflake Fairies who assist them in their journey. INTERMISSION ACT 2: SCENE I At the Sugar Plum Fairy Palace, preparations are being made for the celebration by the Court Members. The Sugar Plum Fairy, her Cavalier, Clara, and the Nutcracker Prince are seated for the show. They enjoy a dance journey through different lands and street dance genres. The finale of this special celebration is the duet between the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier. Drosselmeyer then reappears to return Clara to the family party. ACT 2: SCENE II Clara awakens to find herself, sadly, exactly where she was when she fell asleep. At that moment, Drosselmeyer re-enters the party with a very special guest, his long-lost nephew, the Nutcracker Prince. Clara is elated, and the family and party guests rejoice with a final dance. 3 LEAD CAST Nutcracker . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Culture Shock San Diego is the originator of the world-wide network of Culture Shock Dance Troupe, Inc.® We are a highly diverse group of individuals who, through the power of Hip Hop music and dance, cultivate self-worth, dignity, and respect for all people throughout our global community. The world-renowned company, founded and headquartered in San Diego since 1993, has outposts in Los Angeles; Oakland; Las Vegas; Chicago; Atlanta; Washington, D.C.; and in Ottawa and Toronto, Canada. ANGIE BUNCH Founder, Artistic Director Angie formed Culture Shock, gathering a group of hip-hop street dancers to develop and perform intricate choreography combining the best of the raw, urban forms of dance burgeoning onto the scene in the early 1990’s. Adding break dancing to this mix in the late 1990s, Culture Shock has become a hip-hop powerhouse under Bunch’s direction. The Culture Shock concept—to bring the urban dance form into the professional dance arena and then let that influence go back the other way. Angie touts the addition of break dancing as a key moment in the history of Culture Shock. “That was the big blossoming for Culture Shock,” she says. “To pull the two genres together: the original and the ‘commercial.’” Angie began her 20-plus-year professional dance career primarily in jazz and musical theater. She then became a Nike-sponsored dance athlete, a job that took her all over the world to present dance and fitness programs. She has created dance/fitness videos and is featured in the book Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits, written by Nancy Alspaugh and Marilyn Kentz. Creating the Culture Shock brand and nonprofit was Angie’s first child, and paved the way for the real deal; Dominica Angel Savant-Bunch was born August 2000, fulfilling her love of family and raising a beautiful, talented daughter. Angie’s vision of Culture Shock is always evolving and the next goal is to add a full educational division to the company in the near future and see her creation of A CULTURE SHOCK NUTCRACKER as a future Broadway production. 2
