Event in Fort Myers TRAIL BLAZERS Several of our club members attended the Florida 4H State Leadership Adventure Weekend last year, where we learned many diseases are either caused by being overweight or are made worse by extra pounds. We were very inspired to go out into our community and teach about making healthy choices. When we heard the Streets Alive! Lee Event was coming to Fort Myers we knew it was the perfect fit for 4-H! “Streets Alive! Lee” is a program based on an event held in many cities all over the world called “Ciclovia”. The town shuts down the streets to cars, in order to create an atmosphere which promotes walking, bike riding, and other activities, which promote fitness and bringing the community together. Our club created three different health, fitness and knowledge-based games called Fitness Bingo, Wheel of Fitness, and Eat This, Not That! We also made a Fun Mohawk Creation Station for bike helmet safety and a “What is 4-H?” booth. Michele Alger, Bethany Namour, and Kelly Turner co-chaired our event. Jeremy Rosauer kicked off our annual Very Scary Harry Chapin Food Drive. The Trail Blazers trick-or-treated for canned goods on Halloween and donated over 100 pounds of food to the Food Bank before Thanksgiving. The Trail Blazers are getting ready for our first fundraisers of the year. On December 8, at the Small Animal Check-In, we will be serving coffee and donuts between 7am 10am. Lunch will be served starting at 10 am until we run out. So please come hungry! Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, and other items will be available. We will also be selling hair bows for showmanship, and other items for the fair. 10% of all proceeds will go to the SW FL & Lee County Fair Scholarship Fund. Come to the Greenmarket Farmer’s Market @ the Alliance for the Arts on December 14 and 21! The Trail Blazers will be selling layered Bean Soup in Mason Jars, hot chocolate, custom hair bows, and many other hand-made items! Nick Orthmann will be heading up our 4-H booth at the Great Outdoor Adventure Day on Saturday December 7 at Lovers Key State Park. We’ll be teaching the community about protecting our environment and “What is 4-H?”. Partnering with Keep Lee County Beautiful, the Trail Blazers participated in Monofilament Madness Day. Using kayaks, we cleaned up the shoreline and collected hundreds of pounds of trash and fishing line from our local waterways. Seven youth represented the Trail Blazers at this year’s Youth Ocean Conservation Summit at Mote Marine in Tampa. They taught about our Mangrove Community Conservation project. We have had a very busy month!
