Dear Parents/Caregivers
KAPA HAKA AND MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK
Well done Miss Agnew, Mrs Tay and the Kapa Haka group for their amazing performance at
the Mosgiel Library last Wednesday. We had a great turnout of parents and visitors who
were all treated to a wonderful display by the children.
VALUES STARS
 Poppy Jennings - for being a great helper to her brother who is in a wheelchair for the
next few weeks
 Destiny Crawford, Erin Hancock and Jackson Bryant - for helping others to finish their
craft during discovery time
 Hunter Cockerill and Liam Anderson - for putting away the chairs after assembly on
Friday
 Abigail Anderson - for being a kind and caring friend in Room 4. You made Miss Lewis
aware that someone in Room 4 was sad so we fixed it immediately to help them be
happy again.
 Destiny Crawford, Erin Hancock and Jackson Bryant - for helping others to finish their
craft during discovery time
ROAD SAFETY ON GLADSTONE ROAD
We have had a few parents contact the school who are concerned about
traffic safety along Gladstone Road. A number of vehicles travel much faster
than the 50kph speed limit and some are overtaking dangerously. If you
witness this, please record the licence plate number and provide this
information to the Police.
WANTED
Annette in the office would like to borrow an All Black Top size S or M.
HEALTH & PE AND SCIENCE SURVEYS
This term we are conducting two surveys with our school community. The first is for Health
and PE and the second is for Science. We ask that you read through these surveys, fill them
out and then either return to your child’s teacher, or to the office. The surveys help us with
curriculum design and ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our community. This is the
last week to return these.
MATHS EVENING
On Wednesday 12 August we have our maths evening for parents and children. The evening
goes from 5:30-6:30 and begins in the Owhiro Centre where we will present an explanation
of how the maths evening will operate. Each syndicate will have stations run by ‘expert’
children. These experts will help your children to explain what strategies they are using or
learning in class, as well as the knowledge required at each stage.
This night will be very informative and we encourage all parents to come along with their
children.

ATTENTION KNITTERS!
Many thanks to the knitters who have already made Peggy Squares. They are
being joined together to make blankets for babies and children, and will be
given to the Dunedin Women’s Refuge.
We would love to have more squares! The more even in size they are, the
easier it is to construct the blankets. We have decided on a size of 14cm square. For most
knitters, that is 30 stitches cast on, and the number of stocking stitch rows you need to make
it a square. Double knit wool is preferred please.
Bring any questions and your finished squares to Miss Holgate in Room 5. She also has some
examples of squares to look at if you are unsure.
DAFFODIL DAY AND SUBWAY LUNCH
Thank you to everyone who has put in an order form for the Daffodil Day Subway Lunches
fundraiser - ordering for this has now closed and we are unable to accept any late
orders. The children’s lunch will be delivered to school on Tuesday 18 August.

WRITING ABOUT LEOPARDS FROM ROOM 13
Leopards are very similar to cats and they swim to catch fish. Leopards are the
second fastest animal in the world. The fastest animal is a cheetah. Leopards can
run 58 kilometres per hour and they are nocturnal. Leopards leave poo to that they
can warn other predators that it is their territory. Leopards can camouflage in trees
and they look so much like cheetahs. – By: Cooper Scammell
Leopards are nocturnal. It means they come out at night. Also leopards hunt at
night. This is how they catch their prey: first they camouflage and then they pounce.
Also, leopards lose teeth when they are at the zoo. Did you know that leopards can
climb trees? – By: Toby O'Neill
DISCOVERY TIME
We have started Discovery Time again on a Friday between playtime and lunchtime for the
Year 3 to 6 children (11:20-12:30). Discovery Time is a fantastic opportunity to develop the
wonderful child leaders we have at East Taieri School and help students to develop the
competencies to become lifelong learners and competent citizens. If you are available to
come along, even once, and take a small group for an activity it would be hugely
appreciated. Examples of activities you might like to take are cooking, art, craft, woodwork,
sports skills, board game sessions, photography……….anything you like! There can be
remuneration of costs of materials if necessary. Grandparents are also very welcome to
come along as well. If you are able to help on a Friday between 11:20am and 12:40pm,
please contact Garth Powell - [email protected] or Janine Clague - [email protected]
BLOGGING
Children from Room 4 have learnt how to create blogs and how to update blogs for a variety
of classrooms in the school.
You may notice some little errors when you view these blogs - we are still learning how to
make blog updates but we enjoy helping out these teachers and classrooms. These are the
links below. We would love you to comment about our blogs.
