The Woman in White
by Wilkie Collins
Summary
A young art teacher, Walter Hartright, meets a strange woman, Anne
Catherick, dressed all in white. They talk together and Walter is puzzled by the
fact that the woman knows a member of the family he is about to start work
with. Walter goes to Limmeridge House in Cumberland and starts his new job,
teaching art to two half sisters, Laura Fairlie and Marian, whose parents are
both dead.
He falls in love with Laura, who closely resembles the ‘woman in white’,
but Laura marries another man because she promised to her father. Marian
advises Walter to leave Limmeridge House, because Laura is engaged to
baronet Sir Percival Glyde, who is coming soon. Laura receives an anonymous
warning against her future marriage, and Walter remembers the ‘woman in
white’ talking about some wicked and cruel baronet. He thinks the warning
letter is from that woman.
Walter goes to the churchyard to see the strange woman who was seen
there. They meet and she gives him her name, Anne Catherick, and that she
has escaped from the asylum where Sir Percival shut her up. Then she gets
frightened and runs away.
Before Walter goes away, he and Marian go to the village to find Anne
Catherick to talk to her. When they arrive, they find that Anne has already
gone.

Mr. Gilmore, the family lawyer, comes to draw up the marriage
settlement. He sends a copy of the warning letter to Sir Percival asking for an
explanation. Walter leaves Limmeridge House. Laura is very unhappy as she is
in love with Walter.
Sir Percival Glyde comes to Limmeridge House and explains that Anne’s
mother used to be his loyal servant. To thank her, he paid for her daughter
Anne, who has mental problems, to be placed in an asylum. Marian writes
a letter to Mrs. Catherick and receives confirmation that this is true. After that
Laura agrees to marry Sir Percival, as she does not want to break her promise
to her late father.
When discussing the marriage settlement, Sir Percival insists on having
his wife’s money in case of her death. Mr. Gilmore does not like the idea.
As Laura is not twenty-one yet, he visits her uncle, Mr. Fairlie, to discuss it. But
Mr. Fairlie agrees to Sir Percival’s claims.
Walter leaves for Central America for eighteen months. Laura’s wedding
date is decided – 22 December– in four weeks’ time. Sir Percival tries to find
Anne Catherick, but she is gone. Sir Percival and Laura get married and leave
for Italy.
Six months later Marian comes to Blackwater Park, Sir Percival’s house,
where she learns that Mrs. Catherick has secretly visited to find out any news
about her daughter. Marian decides to visit Mrs. Catherick.
Sir Percival and Laura come from Italy with Count Fosco, Sir Percival’s
friend. Laura is very unhappy, it’s clear now that her husband married her for
her money only. To clear out his debts he needs to obtain his wife’s money. He
also has a terrible secret that the ‘woman in white’ knows. Marian overhears
a conversation and tells Laura about it.
Sir Percival learns about Mrs. Catherick’s visit which makes him very
angry. He tries to make Laura sign some document about her money but fails.
Outraged, Sir Percival leaves Blackwater Park.

Marian and Laura go to an old boathouse and see a strange figure. They
become frightened and go home, but someone is following them, and it is not
Count Fosco. Laura goes to the boathouse again and meets Anne Catherick
there. Anne tells her she wrote the warning and followed her last time. She
also says she know a terrible secret about Sir Percival. Suddenly she gets
frightened and runs away without revealing the secret.
Sir Percival comes back. Count Fosco, who has seen Laura’s meeting with
Anne, tells him about the meeting, and they go to the boathouse to wait for
Anne there. But Anne never appears. Sir Percival reads Anne’s note to Laura
and becomes frustrated.
Marian eavesdrops on Sir Percival and Count Fosco plotting to obtain
Laura’s money in the event of her death. Count Fosco asks about the woman
he has seen with Laura in the boathouse. Sir Percival explains it is Anne
Catherick and says that by coincidence, she looks as if his wife would look after
a long illness.
When spying on Sir Percival and Count Fosco, Marian becomes so
terribly ill and is bedridden. Sir Percival closes up Blackwater Park, and Count
Fosco moves to London. Laura is told that he has taken Marian with him and
she also leaves for London. But Marian is still at Blackwater Park. She had been
moved to another room.
Lady Glyde arrives at Count Fosco’s house. She looks very frightened and
very ill. The next day she dies. Lady Glyde’s body is sent to Limmeridge and
buried in her mother’s grave.
Walter Hartright returns to Britain, where he learns about Laura’s death.
He goes to Limmeridge to visit Laura’s grave, as he still loves her. But in the
churchyard he meets Marian, and the still very much alive, Laura.
Marian, Laura and Walter rent a small flat in London. Marian tells Walter
their story. After she recovered from her illness, she learned that Laura had
died of a heart problem. Anne Catherick had been found and put in the asylum
again. Her mental problems got worse and she thinks she is Lady Glyde. Marian
went to the asylum and found Laura there. She helped Laura to escape, and
they went to Limmeridge, where they met Walter.

Laura says that Count Fosco met her in London and took her to some
place to meet her sister. There he gave her a cup of strange tea, she fainted
and recovered in the asylum. Using their similar appearance Sir Percival and
Count Fosco placed Laura in the asylum as Anne Catherick, and moved Anne to
Count Fosco’s house, where she died as Lady Glyde.
Walter wants to find out Sir Percival’s secret so he can use it to destroy
him and goes to see Mrs. Catherick. At the end of a difficult conversation, she
tells him to go to the church and look at the book of marriage records.
Walter goes to the church and finds that the entry for Sir Percival’s
parents’ marriage is a forgery – his parents never married, which means that
he is not a baronet and has no legal rights for Blackwater Park. Moreover, he
can be sent to prison.
Sir Percival understands he is in danger and comes to the church to
destroy the forged page. He accidentally starts a fire, gets trapped inside and
dies.
Sir Percival’s death is officially recognized as death by accident. Walter
receives a note from Mrs. Catherick explaining the extraordinary resemblance
of Laura and Anne – they are half-sister, and have the same father.
Walter comes back to London. He tells Marian the whole story, but they
decide to tell Laura only about her husband’s death. Walter and Laura get
married. Walter brings Laura to Limmeridge House where he explains what has
happened. She is legally recognized as being alive, and after her uncle’s death,
inherits Limmeridge House.

David Herbert Lawrence ; O’Henry;
Hector Hugh Munro; Mark Twain ;
Francis Marion Crawford;
Stephen Leacock
Summary
There is one overall theme that concerns all the stories– they are all about
people coping in different ways with the world around them. The stories focus
on a wide range of people, from Armenians living in California, to a gravedigger
in the English countryside.
Silas the Good, H.E. Bates
Old Uncle Silas was working as a gravedigger. One spring afternoon he
fell asleep in a grave, his bottle of beer filled with iced tea in his hands.
A passing lady became furious at the sight of man drinking on holy ground.
With a cup of tea, flattering words, and stories about having become a good
man in spite of a difficult life – and the alcohol in the tea which the lady didn’t
notice – uncle Silas softened her, and she was later seen on the train, talkative
and excited, with flowers and a strong smell, happy to have met a good man.

Mabel, W. Somerset Maugham
At a club in a village on his way to Pagan, George, a local man, had met
Mabel in England and they had agreed to marry in six months; but difficulties
had made it seven years. On the day she was coming, George felt that he
couldn’t marry a woman he practically didn’t remember, so he wrote a letter
for her and left. His escape led him across Asia, but wherever he arrived there
was news that Mabel was following him. When he finally felt safe, Mabel
arrived and said how relieved she was to see he had not changed, as it would
have otherwise been difficult to tell him she would not marry him. After five
minutes they were married. Now Mabel is on a trip and George misses her.
The Barber’s Uncle, William Saroyan
A boy of eleven decides to have his hair cut when a bird tries to nest in
it. The barber, a wise man, tells him the story of his uncle Misak. Misak lived on
fighting people until he lost his strength and, at the age of forty, poor and
lonely, travelled the world and joined a touring show in which he put his head
in a tiger’s mouth. Eventually, the tiger bit his head off. The boy leaves the
barber’s shop with a bad haircut and a deep reflection on the loneliness of
man and the contradictory nature of reality.
The Rocking-Horse Winner, D.H. Lawrence
Paul, a little boy, hears from his mother that they are an unlucky family.
In his house, he permanently hears the echo of the need for more money. He
decides that he won’t be unlucky and asks his rocking-horse about the winners
in horse races, which he learns about from the gardener – a secret he shares
with his uncle. Paul gathers a large amount of money for his mother, but it
doesn’t seem to be enough, and getting more becomes an obsession that leads
him to a brain fever that eventually kills him. His mother is left with 80,000
pounds and no son.

Springtime on the Menu, O. Henry
Sarah, a copy-typist, types the menus for a restaurant in exchange for
daily meals. She has been waiting because Walter, a young farmer she met the
summer before, promised her they would marry when Spring came. But the
weather is still cold, and Walter has not written in two weeks. Sarah types the
menus daydreaming of a day on the farm, when Walter put dandelions on her
hair. She cries as she sees a dish of dandelions on the menu, and she mistypes
its name: ‘Dearest Walter with hard-boiled egg’. This mistake, together with
a problem in her W key, enables Walter to find her when he goes to the
restaurant by chance. She had moved and Walter had not been able to find
her.
The Open Window, H.H. Munro (Saki)
Having moved to the countryside in search of a cure for his nerves, and
carrying a letter of introduction from his sister, Mr. Nuttel visits the
Sappletons. Vera, a fifteen- yearold girl, explains to him that the window is
open because three years before Mrs. Sappleton’s husband and brothers left
through it and never returned. They sank in a bog and their bodies were never
found, so her aunt is still waiting for them. Mrs. Sappleton comes down and
explains that the window is open because her husband and brothers are about
to return. When Mr. Nuttel sees them coming, he runs off without a word.
Vera explains to the family that he was probably afraid of the dog, as he had
been attacked by dogs in cemetery in India and had had to spend the night in
a grave. Vera had a great imagination.

The Income-Tax Man, Mark Twain
The narrator receives a visitor in his shop and, unwilling to show his
ignorance about what he does, tries to trick him into speaking about his
business by boasting about how much money he has made during the year.
He is shocked to find that his visitor is an income tax assessor, and sees a rich
man who helps him fill in his forms so as not to pay what he should according
to what he told the assessor. He manages not to pay at the cost of his selfrespect.
The Upper Berth, F. Marion Crawford
At a party, Brisbane, an old sailor, tells a story about a ghost on board
the Kamtschatka. He had been assigned the lower berth in cabin 105 and
noticed everybody was nervous about it. On the first night, he found the
window open, and heard the man who shared the cabin with him ran away.
The following morning he was told that the man had disappeared. The same
had happened to three other men who had travelled in that cabin before.
Brisbane soon found that the window would open during the night and was
determined to find out what happened. He stayed in the cabin during the night
with the Captain, and they found there was a strange damp creature in the
upper berth. They fought it out, and the cabin was locked to passengers.
Neither he nor the Captain travelled in the Kamtschatka again.
My Bank Account, Stephen Leacock
The narrator has an irrational fear of banks but, having received a raise
in his salary, decides that he needs to open an account. When he gets into the
bank, his nerves lead him into asking to see the manager alone, saying he
would open a very large account, walking into the safe and writing a cheque
for the whole amount he had deposited. He leaves the bank with his 56 dollars
in his pocket, and decides to keep his savings in a sock.

People are often surprised to learn just how long some varieties of trees
can live. If asked to estimate the age of the oldest living trees on Earth, they
often come up with guesses in the neighborhood of two or perhaps three
hundred years. The real answer is considerably larger than that, more than five
thousand years.
The tree that wins the prize for its considerable maturity is the
bristlecone pine of California. This venerable pine predates wonders of the
ancient world such as the pyramids of Egypt, the Hanging Garden of Babylon,
and the Colossus of Rhodes. It is nearly as tall as the giant redwood that is also
found in California, and in fact it is actually not very tall compared with many
other trees, often little more than five metres in height. This relatively short
height may be one of the factors that aid the bristlecone pine to living to ripe
old age high winds and inclement weather cannot easily reach the shorter
trees and cause damage. An additional factor that contributes to the long life
of bristlecone pine is that this type of tree has a high percentage or resin,
which prevents rot from developing in the tree trunk and branches.
1. The expression "in the neighborhood of..." could be best replaced by _____.

b. of approximately
c. on the same block as
d. with the friendliness of
2. The word "venerable" is closest in meaning to ______.

Telecommuting is some forms of computer communication between
employees' homes and offices. For employees whose jobs involve sitting at
a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the location of
the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can communicate over
telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office
computer and transmit the information to their employers. A recent survey in
USA Today estimates that there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters.
But although the number are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be
as significant as predicted when Business Week published "The Portable
Executive" as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn't Telecommuting
become more popular?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active
resistance on part of many managers. These executives claim that supervising
the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be
too difficult, or, at least, system for managing them are not yet developed,
thereby complicating the manager's responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of
Telecommuting are often reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people
feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned
that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not
more visible in the office setting. Some people feel that even when a space in
their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away from office.
