Mrs. Hughes`s Creation Myth The iPhone alarm

Mrs. Hughes’s Creation Myth
The iPhone alarm sounds a soft bell tune, nudging a groan out of a very groggy Christy. The heat rattles downstairs, but the warm covers muffle all other
morning sounds. Dancing puppy paws on the carpet mingle with the whirring fan to lull her back to sleep. Just as she starts the most pleasant dream, she is
jolted awake by her puppy’s karate chop slices on the side of her bed. He yips and jumps until Christy’s socked feet smack the ground and fumble to the stairs.
Over her hover Sarcastic Salamander and the Giant Green Goober. Salamander has a constant smirk on her face, enjoying each unfortunate event in Christy’s
life. Salamander slithers on her art studio walls, climbs all over her kitchen, and rides shotgun in her car. The Salamander’s presence is unavoidable, but Christy is
usually able to ignore her by listening to upbeat music and talking to friends. The Giant Green Goober, on the other hand, makes faces at Sarcastic Salamander,
sending good wishes Christy’s way and helping her laugh her way through mistakes. He thinks randomness and accidents are the best part of life and enjoys
seeing people overcome. His booger-like appearance puts everyone at ease and helps them see that being perfect isn’t all there is to life.
Sarcastic Salamander already has plans for Christy’s day. She can’t wait for Christy to forget her lunch in the fridge and spill her cereal all in her lap during
breakfast. The Giant Green Goober, however, is looking forward to surprising Christy with a thoughtful text from her boyfriend. He hopes that the text will put
her in a great mood for the rest of the week. Sarcastic Salamander doesn’t see the point of mushy texts and wishes she could sabotage Christy’s phone. If only
she knew the passcode…
As Christy feels the cold cereal splattering all over her lap, she wishes she could start the day again. She’s so angry she stomps out the door, leaving her water
bottle and lunch behind. Even when her boyfriend texts her, she doesn’t respond because she’s so mad at herself for being clumsy. Even the best attempts of
the Giant Green Goober can’t make this day better. After a conference, Sarcastic Salamander and the Giant Green Goober agree that something must be done.
Even Salamander can’t stand to see Christy this down-in-the-dumps. The Green Goober decides that Christy deserves fresh flowers delivered to her work and a
massive box of chocolates from her boyfriend. Salamander nearly chokes at the thought of so much love, so they compromise by inspiring her boyfriend to just
send the flowers. When Christy receives the beautiful bouquet, she is so pleasantly surprised that she manages a smile.
On her drive home from work, Christy stops singing along with the radio long enough to whisper a little word of thanks to the Giant Green Goober and even
Sarcastic Salamander. “Even though my day started out completely rotten, the accidents actually helped me appreciate the sweet surprises along the way. Next
time, though, Salamander, can you skip the dropping the cereal bowl part??”
Salamander responds with a “yeah, right” chuckle, and the Giant Green Goober looks very pleased with himself. The gods shake hands and begin to plan
Christy’s next day, full of challenges and surprises.
