The shadouf was not the only aid to irrigation in ancient Egypt. Egyptians also invented a
more complex device. The forked part of a tree was cut and made into a center post. It
was connected to a set of waterwheels placed in an irrigation ditch. Two yoked cattle were
tied to the center post. Blindfolded, they walked in an endless circle, turning the center post
that powered the waterwheels to drive water from one ditch to another.
