December 2015 Child Development Center MAKING THE CONNECTION Kamrynn, 1 year old Give Today for a Better Tomorrow Just one donation can have a lifelong impact Crawling. First steps. Three-word sentences. Those simple milestones aren’t so simple for every child. But that’s where CDC comes in. For nearly 50 years we’ve been helping children reach their highest potential before kindergarten. The first five years shape the foundation for a child’s future. Please consider making that future brighter with a donation to CDC. Simply use the enclosed envelope to mail your tax-deductible gift or give online @ cdccasper.org/donate. Today Your financial gifts ensure the level of excellence you’ve come to expect from CDC’s programs, all aimed at the youngest members of our community! Your in-kind donations of goods and services free up valuable resources to satisfy other program needs. Tomorrow Gifts to the CDC Foundation ensure services for children are available for years to come. Monetary donations, estates, wills, trusts, and other planned giving options are welcome. After starting the process to adopt our daughter Clover, we found out we were expecting! It was a fun time. We knew Clover’s birth mom. We were pregnant at the same time and saw a lot of each other. When the big day arrived, Clover ended up in the NICU, a stressful two-month experience. Then, after being home just a week, our son Henry was born. Premature, he, too, spent time in the NICU. In the middle of all of that, Clover was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). It’s a rare condition with physical, cognitive and behavioral components. People don’t know about it, so there’s not much help for it at this point. For Clover, the first sign was failure to thrive. She didn’t eat, she had tonal issues, and didn’t cry. She had a feeding tube until she was 13 months old. PWS also affects breathing, and at some point in her lifetime she will develop a brain-driven, insatiable appetite that can be incredibly dangerous. Thankfully, before Clover’s birth we were familiar with developmental services, and I had even been to CDC before, so we knew where to go for help. I can’t imagine having to find all the services Clover needed on our own. We moved to Casper in 2013 and started getting early intervention therapies with CDC. In the beginning, because of the tonal issues, Clover couldn’t even hold her head up. But as the therapies continued we started to see real progress. When Clover started to roll over, I was elated that she had that freedom! That simple act was a very big deal for us! And just a couple months ago at CDC she took her very first steps (at age 3!) down their long hallways as staff counted out each step aloud and cheered her on. “We were told a lot of things she would never do, so to see her doing those things is totally awesome!” There were many things the doctors said Clover would never do and now she’s doing them - walking, feeding herself, enjoying a lot more independence than expected. It’s so rewarding to see her achieve what she’s been working so hard for, and how proud she is of herself. There’s a specialist in Florida we want to see. The costs seemed impossible, but we were determined to get there. So we said, how can we reach this goal? I came up with the idea of selling 100 handmade dolls in a year to raise the money (look for Blue J Ink on Facebook). Well, we raised the money in just three weeks! We look forward to the trip, and are excited to add the PWS specialist to our medical team. There was a time when we worried about whether Clover would ever have friends or even be able to interact with others. I’ll never forget the day her preschool teacher, Lori, came out in tears and told me “I just wanted you to know Clover made a friend!” It’s true. You can see her sitting at the table for snacks with her friends. It turns out my fears weren’t realized at all. Inclusion (placing children with and without special needs together) is a wonderful thing! For our part, we believe that early diagnosis and early intervention are the reason kids with PWS are doing so much more than they’ve ever done before. Being able to start services at birth and through that critical window of the first five years, instead of waiting as late as 8 to 10 years, means we can do more, make greater gains, and give kids and families greater hope. CDC does just that. And for our family the reward has been the gratification that comes from finding Clover is overcoming limitations. Gotta Sing & Dance CDC is excited to announce a partnership with Vibes Fine & Performing Arts to bring our students the award-winning Kindermusik curriculum. The research-based Kindermusik enhances development and kindergarten preparation through singing, dancing, and having fun! Children also learn musical terms while exploring a variety of instruments, incorporating sign language, and discovering the basic foundations of music. Songs, stories and focused listening teach early literacy and language development, plus, children learn social skills such as turn-taking and self-regulation. We are proud to partner with the exceptional instructors at Vibes to bring this amazing program to CDC! Hear in the Dark Congratulations to Wyoming Families for Hands and Voices. They raised around $10,000 dollars with this year's “Hear in the Dark” glow run. Proceeds helped to fit one deserving little girl with hearing aids and will support sending students to an academic bowl in Denver. Funds have also been set aside to assist families that may need to travel outside of Wyoming for audiologist appointments. Around 350 individuals registered for the race, and despite Wyoming’s temperamental weather, hundreds participated in the run, including about a dozen CDC staff members. Hearing loss affects 3 of every 1000 children born in the US. Groups like Hands and Voices, Wyoming EHDI, and CDC provide support and resources to improve communication and educational outcomes for children with hearing impairment. Special thanks to Mashell Englet Connect with CDC on Facebook. You’ll also find tips, crafts, and fun activities to help your little one grow! Hear stories of hope from CDC families. Visit our YouTube channel to see the impact of your support! Power of Touch What are the benefits of infant massage? Infant massage is beneficial in creating and strengthening the bond between parents and children. Massage provides positive touch, increases circulation and range of motion, assists in gas and colic relief and sleep and sleeps routines, and causes the release of oxytocin (the feel-good hormone) for both parent and baby. Three members of the CDC team recently attended Infant Massage training, bringing the total number of employees certified in infant massage to eight. The certification enables therapists to train families on growing the bond between themselves and their child, plus become more hands-on in their child’s therapy. Infant massage techniques can be adapted as a child grows. Parents will be able to use these techniques for years to come to provide positive touch to promote bonding, attachment and trust, and be more involved with their child’s overall wellbeing. www.cdccasper.org Thank You to Our Supporters! 307 Magazine - Harmony, Hops & Hope AAA Casper Fire X John & Cathy Adams Todd & Brenda Adams Patrick Alexander Brody & Trina Allen Larry & Vicki Allen Jerry & Karen Alley Altitude Veterinary Hospital Greg & Tracy Alvar Marco & Daryl Amador Greg & Gayle Andress Shelby Andress Nanci Andrew Samantha Andrew Sandy & Julie Andrew AP Wyoming Artisan Alley Aspen Ridge Dental Eric and Karessa Atkins Ray and Jane Atkins Atlantic Electric Patty Bachand Bailey Enterprises Jim & Cathy Bailey Mandy Ballew The BARK Firm Senator John & Bobbi Barrasso Jim and Sally Belcher David & Mary Bell Nick & Kelly Benardis Sean Benham Dr. Scott Bennion Neil & Samantha Benton Brent & Diane Berg Josh & Natalie Betcher Brendon Billinger John & Toni Billings Benji & Angie Bjorklund Brent & Kathy Blair Kelly & Roxanne Bloom Boatright Development Art & Lynette Boatright Chris & Dorinda Boger Jon & Annie Boulanger Dr. Abby Bowen-Rodda Dick & Lisa Bratton Terra Breckenridge Krystal Brewer Erin Bromley Lisa Brooks Scott & Deanna Brownell Bruce and Cindy Brugger George & Linda Bryce Chris & Marcie Buchholz Jason & Kera Bullard Brendan & Michelle Bummer Burgess Rig Repair Kevin & Chelsea Burgess Mike and Janie Burnett Tim & Lisa Burridge Richard & Cori Burton Dude & Heather Butler Zach Byard The Cadillac Cowgirl Mike & Pam Calar Cameco Jason & Marnie Camp Jason and Marci Campbell Mark and Jan Campbell Jason Carrasco Casper College Casper Country Club Casper Coyotes Casper Orthopaedics Associates Casper Police Dept. - Youth Diversion Program Casper Star Tribune Erin Castle Fred and Beth Catchpole Kathy Catellier Brian & Lori Cetak Chamber Of Commerce Chevron Brooke Chynoweth CK Mechanical & Casper Tin Donny and Laura Claunch Sam Clikeman CNFR Lucas & Julian Cogdill Lisa and Andrew Colling Community Action Partnership Deborah Cook Lew Cooksey Crowley Fleck PLLP Kelly Dailey Daniels Fund Marlene Dapper Josh and Kelli Deacon Decker Auto Glass Bill & Chrisa DeGraeve Denbury Resources Chris and Beth Detrick Developmental Pediatric Services Fred & Kim DeVore David Dewald Donald and Judy Dewenter Bill Dike Don Juan Mexican Restaurant Sean Donnelly Brady and Kelly Doran Amanda Dowler Tom & Melanie Dowler Dsasumo Bob and Daria Dundas Dave & Karla Dundas Jennifer Dundas Anthony Durst Jennifer Dyer Rocky & Lisa Eades Jeff & Staci Eckhart Eggington's Brenda Eickhoff & Mike Schafer Jack and Rita Eickhoff Jim and Sue Eickhoff Ken Eickhoff The Family of Kathy Eickhoff Albert and Kari Eighmy Ruth R Ellbogen Foundation Benjamin & Nicole Emery Jeff and Mashell Englet Troy and Dodie Eskew Mike and Shani Fackler Elie and Joann Fahed Rich Fairservis Farnham's Furniture Galleries Jenny Farrell Frank and Karen Fazio Dan & Kim Fedore Doug Ferguson Michelle Ferguson Paul & Donna Feyhl First Interstate Bank Fischer Body Shop Julie Fischer Mickie and Arlene Fischer Rod and Shannon Fischer Five Trails Rotary Jim Fletcher Floral Rhino Jamie Foran Ryan Ford Foss Motors Dr. Sherrill Fox Jim & Jolene Freeburn Shannon Freeburn Friends Fine Salon Galles Greenhouse Jeff and Teresa Galles Shane and Kris Galles Scott & Kyler Gallinger Jeff and Marcee George Bobbi Gerlock John Giantonio Michelle Giffin Sean and Amber Gifford Jerry and Peg Gilbertson Mark and Emily Gilbertson Steve & Heather Gilmore Girl In Air Mike Glickman Charles and Brenda Good Jade & Brandi Good Goodstein Foundation Granite Peak Development Colin & Stacy Gransbery Greiner Motor Co.
