16‐19 Collabora on in Stafford
The
Stafford
Collegiate
www.staffordcollegiate.staffs.sch.uk
Welcome to the Stafford Collegiate
Stafford Collegiate is simply the name given to the common sixth form
curriculum offered by Blessed William Howard Catholic High School,
King Edward VI High School, Sir Graham Balfour School, Stafford Sports
College, Walton High School and The Weston Road Academy. It also has
a shared resource at the Chetwynd Centre where a number of the
courses are delivered.
There are many good reasons for con nuing your educa on into the
sixth form. Whether it is your inten on to aspire to higher educa on or
look at a career path, by remaining at school you have access, through
the Stafford Collegiate, to an outstanding curriculum offer. Whether
you wish to study at A‐level or BTEC, through the Collegiate you can
access over 40 different courses.
The Stafford Collegiate has been working successfully as a partnership
for several years. The goal of the Collegiate is to maximise the
opportuni es for all 16‐19 students in Stafford by ensuring they have
access to the broadest possible curriculum, whether this a purely
academic route or a mix of voca onal and academic subjects.
A unique feature of Stafford Collegiate is that whilst each partner
retains its independence, iden ty and ethos, co‐opera on takes place
where it is clear students will benefit. Students gain the advantage of
belonging to an ins tu on which will support them through the sixth
form and give them all necessary pastoral care and tutorial support.
Alongside this a student can take full advantage of choosing a
programme of study from all partners.
To keep travelling to a minimum where a subject is available at your
own school it is normal prac ce to study there, but if you find there is a
clash, or the subject you wish to study is not offered by your school
then you can take full advantage of op ng to follow courses on offer in
all partner ins tu ons. This will involve travelling between schools or
the Chetwynd Centre, and to allow this to happen all partners operate a
broadly common metable.
September 2015 marks the introduc on of new style A and AS level
examina ons which have been introduced as a result of the complete
overhaul of the A‐level examina on system, so most students are
looking at making a commitment to a two‐year course.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Collegiate in 2015

Entry Process
This is an exci ng me for Y11 students and it is vital that you research your future programme of
study very carefully. You should think about your possible post‐18 op ons and, in doing so, you
may wish to look at university prospectuses or websites to view entry criteria. You should also
consider your own strengths, see where you are succeeding, but also consider subjects which
may be new to you: psychology, criminology, media studies, etc. Take me to read carefully the
individual course specifica on sheets available from all the Stafford schools, the Chetwynd
Centre, UCAS Progress or on the website, before making your choice.
By using this prospectus you can work out your metable when discussing your preferred
programme of study and see what travel implica ons it may involve. Do not be put off by this.
As a sixth form student you will gain a good experience of what life beyond school, such as
university or the workplace, may be like.
The applica on process usually begins a er your mock GCSE examina ons. Each school hosts a
Post‐16 Evening. Some students may not know what AS and A‐levels are or the difference
between BTEC Level 3 Diplomas or Subsidiary Diplomas. Take as much advice as you can from
school, home, advisors and, of course, Staffordshire Careers and Par cipa on Services.
The most valuable guidance will come from your discussions with teaching staff and tutors, so
use every opportunity to talk to people to make sure you choose the right programme to allow
you to achieve your full poten al and allow you to progress further in educa on or into a career.

Entry Criteria
Because of the different combina ons of courses available, there is a clear set of entry criteria for
students following courses through the Stafford Collegiate.

The normal entry criteria to study in the sixth form is an A*‐C in at least five different
subjects, including English and Mathema cs.

To study Mathema cs, Modern Foreign Languages or Music you will be required to achieve
at least a B grade in that subject at GCSE.

To study Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Psychology) you will be required to achieve
at least a B grade in Addi onal Science or have achieved C or above in the individual subject
area if taken as a separate science. Because of the high mathema cal content in many
science A‐levels, par cularly Physics, Mathema cs GCSE at grade B would be advantageous.

To study Further Mathema cs you will be required to achieve an A/A* grade in
Mathema cs at GCSE.

To study other subjects already taken at GCSE you must achieve a C grade or above.

To study the Transi on Course you should have achieved mostly C grades with at least
grades D in English and Maths.
Y12 Transi on Course
For students who do not meet these criteria, there is a one‐year course available which is
designed to assist students from Y11 into a full sixth form course by taking an extra year in
suppor ng their transi on into a full study programme. This will include resits in GCSE English
and/or Mathema cs, a Subsidiary Diploma at BTEC and undertaking an Extended Project. This
course is designed for students who pass GCSE English and Mathema cs at grade D but would
like to stay in the sixth form and aim at following a full programme a er Y12.
Admissions Panel
Students may be referred to the Admissions Panel where:



An applicant offers alterna ve qualifica ons;
Has not met entry criteria but there are known mi ga ng circumstances;
A student wishes to repeat a year of a course.
The panel comprises representa ves of heads from partner schools and the Collegiate Manager
and meets during the first week of the Autumn Term. The panel reserves the right not to offer a
place on a course to students who, it believes, would not benefit from it.

Five Reasons to Choose Stafford Collegiate
1
SUCCESS
Success is paramount to everyone who works within the Collegiate. Last year the
overall pass rate at A‐level was 98% which is as good as the na onal average and
above local averages. Teaching has been rated as good and outstanding in recent
Ofsted reports, which have also commented on the outstanding curriculum
programme available in Stafford.
2
CHOICE
Because we work collabora vely students in Stafford are able to take advantage of
one of the widest curriculum offers available to any group of students at any sixth
form. By working on a broadly common metable and making transport available
where necessary students can benefit from over 40 courses at both A‐level and at
level3 BTEC.
3
SUPPORT
You will be guided and supported throughout your me in the sixth form. You will
be guided through the transi on from GCSE to sixth form, and every Collegiate
student has an assigned tutor, who has responsibility for overseeing your progress,
monitoring your academic targets, and suppor ng you with applica ons to
university, college or the workplace.
MONITORING
4
Each Collegiate student is set a series of personalised target grades based on their
previous academic performance. Progress against these targets is monitored on a
regular basis. This ensures that students remain focused and well mo vated, and
retain a sense of realism about their academic performance. If any
underachievement is iden fied this will be followed by suppor ve interven on.
ENRICHMENT
5
In addi on to your academic studies, students within the Collegiate are offered an
extensive range of enrichment ac vi es. These may include sports leadership,
Extended Project or further recrea onal and academic op ons, all of which give you
the opportunity to develop exis ng interests or try out new ones. Whatever you
chose it will enhance your learning and help you to develop new skills.
