Installing SCO UnixWare 7.1.x Section 4. On-Line Information and Software Sources Section 1. General Tips Introduction The following subsections discuss problems that you may encounter when installing SCO UnixWare 2.1.x. SCO UnixWare installation procedures include installing SCO UNIX files, loading all required drivers (including HBA packages), and linking information to the kernel. As a rule, select fully configurable, rather than automatic, initialization. CaSe SeNsItIvE All versions of UNIX are very case sensitive and you need to be absolutely sure that you type in the commands exactly as instructed. Almost all UNIX commands are in lower case so if you are unsure try lower case first. Start Counting At Zero In almost all cases a UNIX system will start counting at ZERO. Therefore, SCSI Controller 0 is the first controller, SCSI Channel 0 is the first channel, Hard Disk 0 is the first hard disk, etc. Set Up All Cards In ECU SCO UNIX likes to have all cards and disk drives configured in CMOS to work properly. SCO can actually read the EISA ROM information. This means that before you try to configure SCO to use a particular adapter card in the system go in and make sure that it is set up in the ECU. Even if it is an ISA adapter without a config file go into the ECU and add a "Generic ISA Adapter" and assign the appropriate resources such as DMA, Memory, and IRQ to match the settings of the card. (There is a config file for a Generic ISA Adapter on the NS#2 diskette or Navigator CD-ROM. Add it as a non-HP board). Installation To Disk Arrays Installation to a logical drive, on a disk array, larger than 2048 MB is not recommended. For backwards compatibility and ease of system administration logical drives smaller than 2 GB are recommended for your root drive. Utility Partition Access Disabled During SCO UnixWare installation, access to the Utility Partition built by the Configuration Assistant is disabled. Select "Skip" when Configuration Assistant asks you to build the Utility Partition. Installation Media The following installation media is required in addition to the main product CD-ROM or tape to install SCO UnixWare. For UnixWare 2.1.x: Installation diskette, SCO UnixWare Host Bus Adapter Drivers diskette, and the HP Drivers diskette (produced from the HP NetServer Navigator CD). Swap Space You may wish to increase the swap space from the default provided. UnixWare uses the swap space to swap the least-recently used pages in and out of memory. If you have the disk space available, you might consider using more than the default, or doubling the size of the physical memory, whichever is greater. Additional File Systems When installing UnixWare you have the opportunity to create separate file systems in addition to the root file system. If you choose to create additional file systems you will be asked to allocate disk space between your root and your other file systems. Be sure to leave enough space in your root file system for installing future applications. Configuring a Mouse All HP NetServers have a PS/2 style mouse. This is also know as a mini-DIN or keyboard mouse. Configuring Video for UnixWare When configuring the video for UnixWare, standard VGA is the safest choice. You can enter the correct video driver after the system is up and running. The following video chips are used in the HP NetServers: E 30: S3 Trio 64V+, 1MB or 2MB video memory E 40, LC II, LC 3, LPr, LH 3, LH4, LXr8000, and LXr8500 : Cirrus Logic CL-GD5446, 1MB or 2MB video memory E 45: Cirrus Logic CL-GD5446, 2MB video memory LC Plus, LD Pro, LH, LH Plus, LH Pro, and LH II: Trident TVGA9000I, 512KB video memory LS, LX Pro, LXe Pro, LXr Pro: Cirrus Logic CL-GD5424, 512KB or 1MB video memory LC2000, LH3000, LH6000, LT6000r : ATI Rage II C ,1MB or 2MB video memory The wrong video driver can produce blank or unreadable screen displays at the higher (greater than 640 x 480 VGA) resolutions. Host Bus Adapter (HBA) Driver Tips The HP NetServers use the Host Bus Adapter drivers for the internal SCSI controllers. The HBA driver is a driver that can be link-edited into the system kernel during the booting process. The link-editing is done by the system after the driver is loaded into memory, but before the kernel is started For UnixWare 2.1.x, the SCSI controller drivers are built into the SCO product. HP recommends that you use the latest adsa and adsl drivers that SCO ships. These drivers are available from SCO on their Host Bus Adapter Drivers disk. HP ships the SCO PTF3124C version of the adsl driver on the driver diskette that is created by the HP NetServer Navigator CD. Driver Names for HP-Supplied Controllers The following table lists the names of required drivers for the HP-supplied controllers. NetServer Controller Package Name E 30,40,45 AHA2910 adsl LC Plus AIC7770 adsa LC II,3 AIC7880 adsl LD Pro AIC7880 adsl LH AIC7855 adsl LH Plus, LH Pro AIC7880 adsl LH II,3 AIC7880 adsl LS AIC7870 adsl LX, LXe, LXr Pro AIC7880 adsl LPr Symbios895 c8xx LH3,LH4, Symbios895 c8xx NetRaid 3Si mega LC 2000 Symbios895 slha & mega LH 3000 Symbios896 slha & mega LH 6000 Symbios896 slha & mega LT 6000r Symbios896 slha & mega NOTE: HP currently does not support ultra SCSI mode on the AIC7880 controllers when they are connected to the HP Storage System 6. Ultra SCSI mode is supported for disks installed in the HP NetServer cabinet. Troubleshooting SCO UnixWare is very specific about the hardware configuration it expects when installing. The following limitations apply: The root hard disk and the install device should both be on the primary SCSI channel. The root hard disk must be SCSI ID 0. The first SCSI tape drive must be SCSI ID 2. The first SCSI CD-ROM drive must be SCSI ID 5. The correct SCSI ID is especially important if you are installing from the tape or CDROM drive. If you have a complicated hardware configuration, install SCO UnixWare using only the minimum system required to install. All additional hardware can be added afterwards. Section 2. Installing SCO UnixWare 2.1.x Large Memory Access SCO UnixWare 2.1.x can access a maximum of 2 GB physical memory (RAM). By default UnixWare will not see more than 128 MB of RAM. If your system has between 128 MB and 2 GB of RAM you will need to modify the "/stand/boot" file as follows. Add the following entry to /stand/boot: MEMRANGE=0-640K:256,1M-16M:512,16M-nnM:8704 where "nn" is the total memory size (in MegaBytes). See the man page for "boot" for a description of the MEMRANGE option. Edit the /stand/boot file very carefully since an error in the file may prevent your system from booting. SCSI Extended Translation Setting The SCSI extended translation setting for disks with a capacity larger than 1 GB should be set to ‘disabled’ for all versions of SCO UnixWare. (Run the EISA Configuration Utility or the SCSI BIOS <cntl>-A to set this parameter.) MPS Table Setting On NetServer LS and LX for SCO MPX For the HP NetServer LS and LX with multiprocessors, you must set the MPS configuration parameter to the correct MPS Table setting. 1. Run the EISA Configuration Utility. 2. Move to the MPS Table selection. 3. Select the MPS table value 1.1 for SCO UnixWare 2.0x. Select MPS table value 1.4 for SCO UnixWare 2.1.x. HP Bundled NICs Not Supported On UnixWare 2.1.x The Network Interface Cards (NICs) that are bundled in some HP NetServer models do not have drivers for UnixWare 2.1.x at this time. Consult SCO's hardware compatability guide for a supported NIC. Installing SCO UnixWare 2.1.x The following instructions help you to install SCO UnixWare 2.1.x on your HP NetServer system. NOTE: In general, UnixWare can not share IRQs across different types of controller cards. For UnixWare 2.1.x, the SCSI controller drivers are built into the SCO product. HP recommends that you use the latest adsl driver that SCO ships. This driver is available from SCO on their SLS “PTF3124C”. The PTF3124C version of the adsl driver was released after the UnixWare 2.1.x update release. HP ships the SCO PTF3124C version of the adsl driver on the driver diskette that is created by the HP NetServer Navigator CD. 1. Use the HP Navigator CD-ROM installation utility to configure your system hardware. This utility creates the HP NetServer UnixWare 2.1.x Drivers diskette (the "Drivers Diskette"). 2. UnixWare 2.1.0 and 2.1.1 have problems with system memory sizes greater than 1 GB. You may experience problem loading HBA drivers during the installation process. You may also have problems reading and writing floppy diskettes. These problems have been resolved in UnixWare 2.1.2. HP recommends that you only use UnixWare 2.1.2 for systems with greater than 1 GB of system memory. 3. Insert the SCO UnixWare Installation diskette and turn on your NetServer. 4. When you are asked to insert HBA driver diskettes you should first use the HP NetServer UnixWare 2.1.x Drivers diskette and then use the SCO UnixWare Host Bus Adapter Drivers diskette. Later during the installation you will need to reinsert the HBA driver diskettes. The HP UnixWare 2.1.x Drivers diskette will be asked for as the “HP NetServer UnixWare 2.1.x Drivers” diskette. For LCII, use the latest SLS "PTF3254s" when you install the osmp package: · Do not select the osmp package when installing UnixWare 2.1.x. · When you finish installing UnixWare 2.1.x, then install osmp (choose Intel for plattform). Do not reboot the machine. · Install PTF3254s, and manually relink the kernel: # /etc/conf/bin/idbuild -B · Reboot the machine. 5. Follow the instructions in the SCO UnixWare Installation Handbook to complete your system installation. 6. After the installation, update your system to UnixWare 2.1.2 (or later). For more reliable network operation, HP recommends that you install PTF3280. For more detail on how to install PTF3280, please refer to SCO documentation. To improve the performance of the network, you need to modify the kernel parameters: Go into System_Tuner (in Admin_Tools folder) and modify these parameters: For STREAMS parameters: - Set STRMSGSZ to 0. - Set STRSCHED to 32 For Virtual Memory (VM) parameters: - Set MINFREEBYTE to 1048576. - Set SEGKMEM_PERCENT to 65. - Set SEGKMEM_BYTE to 0x7000000 Click OK, and relink the kernel. Reboot the machine. Section 3. Installing UnixWare 7.1.x The following instructions will help you to install SCO UnixWare 7.1.x on your HP NetServer system. NOTE: In general, UnixWare can not share IRQs across different types of controller cards. NOTE: For LP2000r, IRQ 15 cannot be assigned to any PCI Devices. IRQs must be locked in the BIOS settings. Steps to lock IRQs for other PCI Devices: 1. Press “F2” key during system boot up to enter the BIOS Setup Menu. 2. Wait until system enters BIOS Setup Menu. 3. Select “Configuration” from Menu and arrow down to “PCI Slot Devices” & press Enter. 4. Arrow down to “PCI IRQ Locking” and press Enter. 5. You will see a list of your PCI Devices. 6. Arrow up and down to choose desired PCI Devices and press Enter. 7. Choose the desired available IRQ for your PCI Device other than IRQ 15. For UnixWare 7.1.x, the SCSI controller drivers are built into the SCO product. HP recommends that you use the HBA driver that SCO ships. 1. Use the HP Navigator CD-ROM installation utility to configure your system hardware. This utility creates the HP NetServer UnixWare 7.1.x Drivers diskette for HP NetRaid, latest HBA Drivers and HP nic driver. 2. Insert the SCO UnixWare Installation diskette and turn on your NetServer. 3. When you are asked to insert HBA driver diskettes you should first use the HP NetServer UnixWare 7.1.x Drivers diskette and then use the SCO UnixWare Host Bus Adapter Drivers diskette. Later during the installation you will need to reinsert the HBA driver diskettes. The HP UnixWare 7.1.x Drivers diskette will be asked for as the “HP NetServer UnixWare 7.1.x Drivers” diskette. 4. On systems with multiple host adapters installed (e.g., SymBIOS, Adaptec, and HP NetRAID SCSI adapter card) there is a special procedure required to tell UnixWare7.1.x which controller is number 0 (the boot controller). · Enter into DCU. · Select the Software Devices Configurations. · Select the Host Bus Adapters. · Deselect the driver for any controller in the system that is not the one you are installing to - Select Misc, then deselect i2otrans if present, this can cause conflict wilth the HP NetRAID card. - Return to DCU main menu and Save @ Exit. 5. Follow the instructions in the SCO UnixWare Installation Handbook to complete your system installation. Section 4.
