Dear Sherwood Forest Families,
As we begin the month of May, it’s amazing how quickly this school year flew!
As we begin to think about end of school activities, it is also important that we
focus on finishing this school year strong! You can help by making sure that
your child comes to school every day and on time, supporting our parking lot
safety procedures and volunteering your time at our upcoming events.
SBA Testing: We are in the middle of Smarter Balanced testing in all of our
3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms. I am so proud of all of our student scholars
who are showing their stamina and doing their very best! Thank you to our staff
members who proctor and support SBA testing, especially Mrs. O’Malley.
Thank you also to all of our families who are making sure that their children are
here every day and on time – especially on SBA testing days!
Safety: If you drive your child to and from school, please drop off and pick up
your child at the curb closest to our school building! It is not safe for a child to
cross the driveway and/or walk through the parking lot without an adult escort.
Thank you families for your patience on the busiest of mornings and afternoons
as we know traffic can back up in our parking lot. A special thank you to our
parent “Forest Greeters” Kari Jones, Heidi Brown, Justin Westcott, Ling
Xiong, Christina Imbert, Mayra Padilla, and Mrs. Hultman for keeping our
student scholars safe first and foremost and also helping traffic flow.
Sherwood’s PTA is an integral part of our school’s success. Our PTA assists
with the additional costs of field trips, organizing and leading events such as
the carnival and book fairs and helping the school to provide students with
additional materials and supplies for their learning. A special thank you to Staff
Appreciation chairs Magda Martin, Kari Jones and the additional parents who
provided the treats each day to Sherwood staff for Staff Appreciation week
(May 1 – 5). I encourage you to consider assisting the Sherwood PTA! We
always welcome new members.
As we look ahead, there are many exciting activities happening at Sherwood
Forest. The following events could not take place without the support of the
individuals who work behind the scenes – our staff, our volunteers, and the
members of our PTA:
 Science Fair: May 11 Led by Parent Volunteers Sav Le & Serena Von Ruden
 Wizard of Oz Musical: May 16 & 18 Led by Music Specialist, Mr. Reynolds
 Volunteer Recognition Celebration: Led by Mrs. Schoeppel & Mrs. Mitchell
 PTA Carnival: Led by PTA Vice President Lindsey Francis
Thank you for entrusting us with your children!
Alisa DeSart, Principal
Spring Safety
Thank you for your support in making our Sherwood Forest parking lot a safer place to drive
and walk. Please remember to only drop off and pick up your child at the curb closest to the
building. Also, while your car is in the driveway, please stay with your car at all times; our
drop-off/pick-up lane is also a fire lane and is, therefore, a no parking zone. The bus lane in
the front of the school is for buses and designated daycare vans only. We appreciate your
cooperation so everyone gets in and out of our parking lot in a timely and safe manner.
As the weather improves, we know that we will have many more
students choosing to walk to school. Just a reminder that unaccompanied
walkers (and 4th and 5th grade bike riders with a signed permission slip)
must live east of 21st Ave SW. We do not want any of our students
crossing 21st and risking their safety to get to school. In addition, all
students must go directly home right after school.
Federal Way Public School’s Heroes Banquet
Congratulations to Justin Westcott, Darianne Westcott, and Heidi Brown at
SOMA Federal Way for receiving the Heroes Banquet Award on April 22nd.
SOMA Federal Way was recognized by Superintendent, Dr. Tammy Campbell
and Principal Alisa DeSart for the support they provide to our families at
Sherwood Forest, which is aligned to Goal 2 “Whole Child” of our district’s
Strategic Plan.

Planning Your Vacation Time for
2017 – 2018?
Please take the time to check the Federal
Way
School
District
website
at
www.fwps.org. The calendar for the 20172018 school year, with the first and last
days of school, winter, mid-winter and
spring breaks are all there. A copy will be
included with your child’s report card.
Please consult the calendar before you make
travel or vacation plans. Vacations taken on
school days are not excused per our
district policy. We want all of our students
to be here every day. Even a few missed
days can make a difference for a student!
Missed school days can affect your child’s
academic success, relationships with peers,
and make it difficult to transition back into
the classroom smoothly.
Thank you for helping us by having your child
attend every day that he/she can possibly
be present!
