JOHN ROLFE MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE REQUEST

JOHN ROLFE MIDDLE SCHOOL
COURSE REQUEST INFORMATION
2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR
GRADE 6
Student’s Name: __________________ Counselor: ________________
❏ Course selections will be done online using PowerSchool. Please use this form to understand the classes our 6th grade
students will take and the elective options that can be chosen. Please refer to the back of this page to learn about the
time-frame of the scheduling process.
❏ Sixth grade students will take a total of 7 classes, in most cases: *English and Math classes will be taught every day, while
Science, Social Studies, Health & PE, and the Elective class will be taught every other day. * Students who are
recommended to take Advanced English 6 will take this class every other day, and they will automatically be placed in
“Foundations of Spanish Part A” for the opposite day.
❏ All students will take an Advisory class for 30 minutes each day. The Advisory class teaches students important skills to
help them manage their middle school experience - such as organization, mindfulness, character education, and other
topics that will support student success. Students who are identified as “gifted learners” will take “Gifted Enrichment 6” in
place of Advisory. Students who need an ESL class will take “English as a Second Language” in place of Advisory. Students
with IEP’s will be placed in an Advisory class with their case manager for extra support (this class will be called “Learning
Strategies”).
❏ Each 6th grade student will take one elective class: Students will need to select ONE elective course - either a full-year
course or the exploratory rotation, which offers students an experience in four different classes throughout the school year.
