The Affording Hope Project and The Churches of Greenwood Park
present Leaps and Bounds, a theatrical production, at St. Angela’s Merici Catholic
Church, 9th and Lighthouse in Pacific Grove on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at 4 pm.
The Churches of Greenwood Park are The Christian Church of Pacific Grove, St. Mary’sby-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Mayflower Presbyterian Church and St. Angela’s Merici
Catholic Church.
Leaps and Bounds, a one woman show produced and performed by Tevyn East is
touring faith communities and institutions of higher learning across the United States in
2011-12. Written in collaboration with Ched Myers, renowned biblical scholar and
teacher,
this show is about the interconnection of faith, ecology, and the global economy.
Weaving biblical and personal narrative, dance, song, music, and a touch of economic
theory, Leaps and Bounds wrestles with the driving factors of our ecological crisis while
awakening the imagination to a new way of living with and relating to Earth.
Leaps and Bounds has been shared with more that 100 audiences in 50 cities
across the country. Von Clemans, associate pastor for adult education at Myers Park
Presbyterian in Charlotte, NC says that the show “opens the past to critical reflection, the
present to prophetic challenge, and the future to new possibilities.”
Daughter of two Presbyterian (USA) ministers, East has spent most of her adult
life developing original works of dance theater as well as teaching dance, organizing
workshops and other cultural events in Charlottesville, VA. While she appears on the
stage alone, Leaps and Bounds is the result of a collaboration among many talented
individuals. A full list of collaborators, themes and project resources can be found at
www.affordinghopeproject.org.
With foot stomping songs, playful humor, daring dance sequences and vulnerable
honesty, this 90-minute show will draw the audience along a compelling journey, and
ultimately
articulate a hope that we can all share.
This performance will benefit Sustainable PG (www.sustainablepg.org), the ministries
of St. Angela’s Merici (stangelapacificgrove.org) and The Blue Theology Mission
Station (www.pacificgrovechurch.org)The Blue Theology Mission Station is a ministry of
The Christian Church of Pacific Grove which offers learning/serving opportunities for
groups to explore a Christian response to Ocean Stewardship. Blue Theology learning
experiences include trips to The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Point Lobos State Reserve and
Asilomar Conference Grounds. Work opportunities include data collection with
LIMPETS, beach cleanup with Surfriders, and sand dune restoration at Asilomar Beach
and Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks. More information about The Blue Theology
Mission Station is available on Facebook and at www.pacificgrovechurch.org. A $10
donation is requested at the door or tickets can be ordered from The Christian Church of
Pacific Grove at 831.372.0363.
Notes From the Lion’s Den
Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.
--- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
--- James 5:18
On October 14 immediately after worship, the 4th annual Chili Cook Off will be in Jones
Hall. This event is a fundraiser for our Rainy Day Fund and the Deacons have asked
me to say a word or two about this fund.
The Rainy Day Fund is funded by events like the Chili Cook Off, designated donations
and occasionally by transfer of funds approved by the Administrative Board from
outreach. Occasionally, a member or friend of the church has a financial crisis which can
be addressed with a small loan. These loans are confidential in nature. Only the pastor
and the chief financial officer know who has received money from this fund. Most of the
time the loan is paid back in a timely way, other times payback is not possible for quite
some time if at all.
Right now, the Rainy Day Fund is actually overdrawn a bit, but I’m sure you can
understand why considering the general economic situation of the past five years. But
payments are being made and fundraisers like the Chili Cook off allow us to continue this
important ministry of the church.
One of the great thrills of serving as pastor of this church is when a member confides in
me that she or he is in a tough financial situation totally unaware that we have a Rainy
Day Fund. And we as a church come to the rescue in a loving and dignified way.
I hope to see you at the Chili Cook Off for some good food and conversation, but even
more I hope to see you to celebrate this unique ministry that we share.
See you in church,
Dan
Pastor Dan Paul will be in St. Louis for the first week of October to attend the General
Minister’s Pastor’s Conference. Dan will also be gone the last week of October on
vacation in Anaheim. The Elders will be on-call for any pastoral concerns.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Cynthia Jewett would like to share this e-mail she received for anyone
that would be interested.
Dear Cynthia,
I’ve been given your name and contact information by Deborah Streeter, a member of your
church, as the contact person / organizer of your prayer-shawl ministry. I’d like to invite you and any
members of your group who might like to join us as we knit on the 1st Friday of every month, @1:00
p.m., in the guild room in Edwards Hall (right next to St. Mary's, the red church across the street from
our church) 3rd Saturday of every month, 8 to 10 a.m., in B's coffee house in Country Club Gate
shopping center.
We usually get between 3 and 8 people. While this is not a large group, it’s important to fulltime working folk like me (who can’t attend our regular meetings which are the first Friday of each
month at 1 p.m.) to have another time to meet, knit, visit, and give thanks to God.
Best wishes,
Lisa

Worship by the Sea
The first “sacred saunter” for the Churches of Greenwood Park led by Associate Rector of
St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea Michael Reid was tremendous! Over 25 people including Pastor
Dan and Greg Knowles gathered at Point Lobos State Park at 8 am on Sunday, September
16. The short, easy, silent hike included three stops – once for a reading ancient Hebrew
literature, once for a Gospel reading and once for a communion service. The photo
includes Michael Reid preparing the communion. We’ll let you know when the next
sacred saunter will happen.
We welcome two of our newest members to our church family!!
They both joined September 2nd!
Mina Behbahani and Fay Tavakolynia
We were also delighted to witness the Baptism of Mina Behbahani
