Top 10 Things to know about Houston
1. Transportation
Taxis
Unlike other large metropolitan cities around the country, taxis are
not readily available in Houston. Click here or call 713-236-1111
to order a cab. Uber is also available in Houston.
Green Link Bus
A free Downtown bus system. Seven buses operate Monday through
Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., approximately 7-10 minutes apart.
Click here for route maps and more information.
B-Cycle Bike Share Program

the first hour. Click here for a map of check out stations.
The Metro System
METRORail is a fast, convenient way to travel to downtown, midtown, the Museum District, Texas Medical Center, Moody Park and
up to the Northline Transit Center / HCC. One-way tickets cost
$1.25 and can be purchased using cash or credit at all rail stops.
2. Shopping
The Galleria
With over 400 fine stores and restaurants, The Galleria is home
to the best shopping in the city. The mall is anchored by Neiman
Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s. Only less than
8 miles from downtown, you don’t want to miss Houston’s answer
to the Magnificent Mile and 5th Avenue. Though the mall is a short
distance from downtown, traffic at peak rush hour times can add
a considerable amount of time to your trip. Click here for more
information.
3. Weather
In February, average temperatures can range from the 30s-40s,
with ice and blistery winds, or in the 60s-70s. Be prepared and be
sure to check the weather before you arrive.
*Note: Dress in Houston is fairly casual, with the exception of fine
dining restaurants and opening nights of the performing arts. Be
sure to check the websites if you choose to dine at upscale eateries.
4. Restaurants
Houston is home to an impressive and extremely diverse culinary
scene. From Underbelly, home to James Beard Award Winner Chris
Shepherd, to Vic & Anthony’s, named one of the 10 Best Steakhouses in the U.S.by Gayot and MSN, Houston’s restaurants are among
some of the best in the country. See our Houston Restaurant Guide
to experience the best cuisine the city has to offer.
5. Around Downtown
Downtown is full of people and activity during business hours during
the week, but there tends to be less traffic after 6 p.m. 6. Downtown Tunnel System
The downtown Tunnel System is an underground, 6-mile interconnected series of restaurants, shops, and service retailers that
serves the downtown community. Wells Fargo Plaza and McKinney
Garage on Main offer direct access from the street to the tunnel.
Besides those two entry points, patrons can access the tunnel from
street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators located inside office
buildings that are connected to the tunnel. The tunnel does have a
wide variety of restaurants, which primarily include food court type
options. Click here for a map of the tunnel.
7. Traffic
In a city of 4 million people, rush hour traffic can become extremely
congested. Avoid major highways during peak rush hour times,
morning and evening.
8. Outdoors
Houston has a variety of trails and parks that can satisfy anyone’s
need to enjoy the outdoors.
Buffalo Bayou Trail: Trail has direct access from downtown. Five
mile loop to Shepherd Dr. will take you along the scenic Bayou. A
