ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS NO. 1
To:
Manufacturers of Electrical Equipment
Subject:
Publication of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0-M91,
"General Requirements - Canadian Electrical Code, Part II"
CSA is pleased to announce the publication of the subject Standard, a National Standard of Canada, which was
published in July, 1991. It supersedes the previous edition C22.2 No. 0 published in 1982.
Background
The new edition of the Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0 and was
formally approved by the Technical Committee on General Requirements.
Rationale
The new edition was published at the request of CSA to bring it up-to-date. A summary of the main changes in
the new edition is as follows:
(a)
Leakage Current Measurement on Cord-Connected Equipment (Clauses 3.4(i), 6.5, Table 2 and
Figure 2)
To address shock hazard due to leakage current, commonly associated with cord-connected
equipment, a general requirement and test have been added to ensure consistency in
measurement. Limits for leakage current have not been specified due to the wide variation in
product designs affected by this requirement.
Individual CEC, Part II Subcommittees will decide on appropriate limits, applicable to the
equipment covered under the Standard of their jurisdiction. Implementation for cord-connected
products will be coordinated with the publication of leakage current limits developed by
individual CEC, Part II Subcommittees.

(b)
Limits of Temperature on Parts Intended to be Handled in Normal Use (Clause 3.4(i))
Products intended to be handled during normal usage pose a risk of personal injury, if the parts
intended to be handled operate at higher than normal body temperature. To address this concern,
a general requirement regarding operating temperatures of parts handled in normal use has been
added in this edition of the Standard.
Individual CEC, Part II Subcommittees will review the nature of the products covered under the
Standard of their jurisdiction, and develop requirements based on product specific factors.
Implementation will be coordinated with the publication of temperature limits developed by
individual CEC, Part II Subcommittees.

To: (ANSI/IEEE) Standard 1-1986 -
General Principles for Temperature Limits in the Rating
of Electrical Equipment and for the Evaluation of
Electrical Insulation
Changes have been made to two of the reference Standards, as the documents referred to in the 1982 Edition of
C22.2 No. 0 have been withdrawn.
(d)
Language of Marking (Clause 5.3)
To ease restrictions faced by manufacturers in the marketing and distribution of their products,
Caution and Warning Markings are now permitted in other languages, if the product is intended
for use outside Canada.
(e)
Cheesecloth (Clause 6.6)
Standardized specifications for cheesecloth have been added, with the intent that this will be
referenced by individual CEC, Part II Standard (rather than having cheesecloth specifications
contained in individual CEC, Part II Standards).

Standards Steering Committee on CEC, Part II - Organization and Rules of Procedure
This information, published as Appendix C in the 1982 edition, has been deleted. Rules
governing the Steering Committee have been published separately in a document entitled
"Regulations Governing Standardization", which is available from the Standards Division of
CSA.
Direction
Customers currently holding Certification of electrical equipment are not required to resubmit their products for
re-evaluation because of the changes to the Standard. A separate Notice/Informs will be issued for each
individual Standard when specific requirements pertaining to leakage current limits and operating temperature
limits are developed and published in individual CEC, Part II Standards.
