It is also the last bastion of the San people with the modern world having enveloped all the other areas they once roamed. Here in Namibia it is typically red sands covered in thin, wispy, mostly golden grass and dotted with acacia trees and wide ranging wildlife including gemsbok, impala, jackals and cheetah. Your Itinerary On arrival at Windhoek International Airport, you are met by your Local Tour Guide who will assist you with your luggage andaccompnay you to your vehicle. Depart for Mariental. Duration: 4-5 Hours, 330km Check-in at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch. The next morning enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Today you have the opportunity just to relax by the poolside or take part in the optional activities provided by the lodge: Bagatelle Cheetah and Sundowner Drive A game-drive in the reserve with a variety of game such as giraffe, kudu, zebra, oryx, blue wildebeest, eland and much more. The reserve has some of the highest dunes in this region with views over the pan, characteristic to the Kalahari. Between the dunes, which are called streets, are the beautiful Acacia trees. The Kalahari has more than 150 species of birds. The well-known suricate (meerkat) is also to be seen, although they are very scarce. Cheetah feeding allows one the opportunity to come up close to the cheetah, great for taking photos. Our guides will provide interesting facts about this incredible cat and the history of the cheetahs in our care. After this, a sundowner on the dune will await you, with refreshments and a Namibian snack, while enjoying a breathtaking sunset in the Kalahari. 6 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Bagatelle Bushman Walk A relaxing walk with the Bushmen (San) to their demonstrational village, sharing with you their ancient survival skills and secrets inherited from their forefathers. Keeping the past alive. On arrival at the traditional Bushman village, you will meet a family who will present you with the way they used to store water in ostrich eggs, plants for medicinal use, setting up traps, the making of ostrich and bead jewellery, etc. This is really an unforgettable experience. Our guide will do the necessary translation into English, as the Bushmen will speak their own language. - Overnight: Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch Included: Dinner and Breakfast The lodge lies on the edge of the Southern Kalahari in the mixed tree and shrub Savanna. The ranch is characterised by huge red sands dunes running parallel, and in a northern-westerly to southeasterly direction. This ‘Spirit of Africa’ atmosphere, coupled with service, delivered with graciousness and charm, in an unashamedly luxurious setting, will be the hallmarks of this establishment, providing excellent value and unforgettable memories for the discerning traveller. - Although three styles of chalets are provided, all have the same standard of luxury and finished quality. There is a swimming pool and recreation area. An open air boma for outdoor dinners captures the atmosphere of an African Safari. Traditional African meals are served from springbok to bobotie. - 7 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Sossusvlei Days 3 & 4 The Namib is the world’s oldest desert, and although it stretches along the entire length of Namibia’s coastline, the Namib commonly refers to the vast sea of sand from Luderitz to Swakopmund. For a big sandy desert the scenery is remarkably varied, with the giant red dunes of Sossusvlei being the most famous part. Because of how old it is the Namib is home to numerous species that don’t occur elsewhere and although no humans live in the desert an amazing array of flora and fauna manages to survive here. Famous species include the Welwitschia – a living fossil plant, endemic chameleons, fur seals along the coast, brown hyenas, jackals and remarkably one of Africa’s largest antelope the Gemsbok. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place" and vast it certainly is. Your Itinerary Early morning breakfast and depart for Sossus Dune Lodge. Duration: 4 - 4.5 Hours, 320km Check-in at Sossus Dune Lodge. The next day we recommend a visit to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. Sossusvlei Tour self drive You will visit the Dunes of Sossusvlei in your rental car in the early morning. At sunrise you reach the entrance gate of the Sossusvlei. It is another 60km – about an hour through the amazing scenery until you reach the 2x4 parking. You stop in the heart of the Sossusvlei and take a walk into the dramatically scenic “Dead Vlei”. The 'vlei' itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turn-around, it becomes a spectacular turquoise lake. The highlight of your Sossusvlei excursion is the view from atop the dunes! "Big Daddy", one of the world's tallest dunes, can be climbed for incredible views of Dead Vlei below and the entire area for miles. Aside from the spectacular scenery and geological fascinations at Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon, the area is ideal for observing some of the dune life for which the Namib is so well known. Geologists believe that this magnificent desert, that covers most of the Namib Naukluft National Park, is the oldest desert in the world. The older the dune the brighter the colour from slow iron oxidisation and a zillion tiny fragments of garnets. These dunes refract spectacular colours with the changing light and turn from burnt orange through reds to deepest mauve - 8 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Sesriem Canyon Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon. - Overnight: Sossus Dune Lodge Included: Dinner and Breakfast Namibia Wildlife Resorts launched the first lodge in the Namib-Naukluft Park, the Sossus Dune Lodge, in June 2007. Built in an environmentally sensitive manner, primarily from wood, canvas and thatch, in an attractive 'afrovillage' style, Sossus Dune Lodge offers guests an evocative and life changing experience. Situated within the park, guests benefit from being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and stay until after sunset, and on their return after an exhilarating day, relax in the tranquillity and splendor of the Namib Desert, under the spectacular African sky. Sossus Dune Lodge offers professional guided tours, fully unleashing the beauty and biological diversity of the desert environment to visitors, and offers the best beds in the desert. - - 9 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Swakopmund Days 5 & 6 Founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany. Now a seaside resort, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, colonial-era buildings and the cool sea breeze make it very popular. Your Itinerary An early morning breakfast and depart for Swakopmund, passing through the ever changing desert and the Ghaub and Kuiseb Pass always alongside the Namib Naukluft National Park towards the cool breeze of the Atlantic Ocean. You will drive past Solitaire, a curious assembly of houses, where you should stop to take a look around and eat the delicious and famous apple pie. Duration: 4-5 Hours, 344km Check-in at Swakopmund Guesthouse. We receommend the following activities during your stay in Swakopmund. Scenic flights Sossusvlei Swakopmund Once on board, set off on a spectacular flight to Swakopmund, which starts off with flying over the highest dunes in the world. The colours and shadows of these gigantic mountains of sand change by the hour from beige to rust-red to purple, dazzling the eye. With Sossusvlei lingering in your mind’s eye, the forbidden Diamond areas are overflown where remains of old diamond camps can still be seen. The flight continues over the ‘sea of sand’, approaching the shore at Conception Bay and the shipwreck of a German passenger liner, Eduard Bohlen. Stranded in 1909, she now lies inland, for the entire world as if she were sailing through the desert. Forthwith the shipwreck of the fishing trawler, Shaunee, comes into sight. Continuing northward, the neverending battle for supremacy between the sand and the sea can be witnesses, as the “Lange Wand” is passed, a 500 feet high dune rising from the water’s edge. Nearing Sandwich Harbour, the pilots ascend to 1500 feet. Sandwich Harbour is a large saltwater lagoon and home to an incredible variety of bird life and one of southern Africa’s greatest natural bird sanctuaries with thousands of Flamingos. From Sandwich Harbour the flight continues over the salt mines and Namibia’s major harbour, Walvis Bay to Swakopmund airfield - 10 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Dolphin Cruise Walvis Bay In the morning departure for a Catamaran Cruise in Walvis Bay. The Catamaran takes guests on a scenic and informative trip through the harbour and across to Pelican Point. Along the way schools of dolphins usually escort and play alongside the boats. The boat stops at the large seal colony off Pelican Point and one can usually witness some large male seals jumping on board the boat for some entertainment. To round off the trip fresh Walvis Bay oysters, snacks, and cold sparkling wine are served on board the boat. Beer and soft drinks are also included. - Living Desert Tours The Living Desert Tour is a unique 4x4 adventure which specializes in bringing the desert to life while sharing the awesome beauty of the Namib Desert with travellers from all over the world. The coastal dune belt may seem barren and lifeless to many people, but in fact it is alive with a fascinating variety of little desert adapted animals, which are able to survive on the life-giving fog which consistently rolls in from the cold Atlantic Ocean. Come see the Dancing White Lady Spider (Carparachne aureoflava) cartwheel 44 turns per second down a dune to escape the enemy. Admire the transparent Namib Dune Gecko (Pachydactylus rangei) with webbed feet that are equivalent to snow shoes. Learn about the different beetles and insects and how they survive in the dune desert. Follow in the tracks of a legless Lizard (Fitsimmon’s Burrowing Skink), observe Sand Diving Lizards (Meroles Anchieta) dancing on the hot sand, Sidewinder Snakes (Perinquey’s Adder), Desert Chameleons and many more fascinating creatures. Learn about the geology, structure and formation of the desert, and admire the vast and beautiful landscapes while enjoying a scenic dune drive combined with fun and adrenalin. - Mondesa Township Tour The Cultural Tour takes you off the beaten track and into the lives of the real Namibians. The tour begins with a brief history of Mondesa Township. On foot you have the opportunity to get a fascinating glimpse into a typical Namibian Township with plenty of opportunity to stop and chat to local residents and view typical homes and schools and stop off at a small home craft market. Included are visits to as many cultures as possible and if open, a visit to a local kindergarten (crèche). End the end of the tour, you stop at a local Shebeen where you will be hosted Ovambo style! Start: Morning or afternoon - 11 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Sandwich Harbour 4x4 Sandwich Harbour, part of the Namib Naukluft Park, is a place many have heard of but very few have ever visited. Giant sand dunes run straight into the ocean, creating breathtaking sceneries and unique landscapes, just waiting to be discovered! Our tour starts every morning at 10h00 at the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 office in Walvis Bay. After a short break at the Walvis Bay Lagoon to see masses of flamingoes, the drive to Sandwich takes us to the first dunes and the Kuiseb river delta, a dry riverbed where the odd springbok may still be seen. Beautiful dunes have to be crossed to get to Sandwich Harbour. If weather and tides allow, we will drive right to the Sandwich Harbour Lagoon, one of Southern Africa’s richest and unique wetlands. Wedged between the sea and the Namib Dunes, potable water seeping from the underground aquifer sustains the freshwater vegetation at the base of the dunes. If our vehicles cannot drive all along the beach to get to Sandwich Harbour because of the tides, you will have the time to walk 4-5 km. Alternatively, you will get a chance to see the lagoon area from one of our many beautiful lookout spots. - When it becomes time to enjoy something to eat, your guide simply finds a suitable place to stop and serves a light lunch including a selection of snacks, salad, bread, and fresh fruit with sparkling wine, oysters and drinks. We usually do this on top of a high dune overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, or on the beach. A folding table, chairs and a tablecloth come out, and we are ready to serve! The route homewards will be done testing the power of the vehicles on the dunes, the highlight being the 65m high Roaring Dune, giving you exceptional viewpoints on the return to Walvis Bay by 16h30. Cape Cross Seal Colony This colony of Cape Fur Seals is one of the largest in the world, home to approximately 80 000 to 100 000 of these so-called 'seals', which are in fact a species of sea lion. Day trips to the colony are offered and the seals can be viewed from a walkway at a distance of roughly 200 metres. - 12 NAMIBIA – 14 NIGHTS – PROPOSED ITINERARY Overnight: Swakopmund Guesthouse Included: Breakfast Situated in Swakopmund town centre and only a 5min walk from the beach and main shopping area, is the Swakopmund Guesthouse, owned and run by the Borg family. It has been completely revamped to offer seven standard rooms, seven luxury rooms and one family suite for guests wanting to indulge in a comfortable stay-over close to the ocean. The spacious rooms are fitted with crisp, white linen sheets. Wallpaper portraying a peaceful view of the ocean adds to the clean and neat atmosphere of the guesthouse. The ensuite bathrooms with soft cream walls are decorated with beach pebbles that give them a unique atmosphere. This particular bed and breakfast establishment caters for the more upmarket traveller. Most of their guests stay here because of high comfort levels, personalized service and the short distance to the beach! - - Damaraland Days 7 & 8 Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and spectacular rock formations. There are an additional 13 sites displaying rock paintings. - Petrified Forest The petrified forest is an area of open veld scattered with petrified tree trunks up to 34m long and 6m in circumference, which are estimated to be around 260 million years old. The original trees belonged to an ancient group of cone-bearing plants that are known as Gymnospermae, which includes such modern plants as conifers, cycads and welwitschias. Because of the lack of root or branch remnants, it’s thought that the trunks were transported to the site in a flood. - Overnight: Mowani Mountain Camp Included: Dinner and Breakfast Mowani Mountain Camp offers luxury tented accommodation with magnificent desert views. Open air en-suite bathrooms and private decks give you great views of Damaraland and the reliability of nearby Twyfelfontein with its San engravings and paintings is contrasted by the elusive desert adapted elephants.
