Pastor’s Column:
Doug’s Discoveries
I’ve Discovered that on any given day, some people
near us are feeling overwhelmed, AND that you don’t
have to go through your entire life feeling that way.
Often in my life I have felt like the circus performer who is spinning plates on the sticks. He runs from stick to stick, catching
each plate, just before it falls off the stick. He spins it again and
runs on to the next near tragedy, and it’s amazing how many
plates he can keep spinning, but when he spins too many, he
can’t keep up the pace for long.
If you feel like you can’t keep up with every dimension of your life,
welcome to the human race, but it doesn’t have to be a life-long
rat-race. This summer in worship we want to remind you of a way
to cope. It’s called, “The Rhythm of Life.” Specifically, we will address 4 aspects of life that are all important: Work, Rest, Worship,
and Play. If one of them takes over your whole life, you are likely
to burn out. God wants a better life for you.

Our Deacon - Rev. Sherry Foster
This month I want to brag about my friend and colleague in ministry here at Milford
UMC. The end of June brings the fifth anniversary of his tenure as our pastor and of
our ministry together as a team of pastor and deacon. Pastor Doug McMunn has
more energy than the Energizer Bunny (if that’s even possible!) He has integrated
himself into the Milford community and made it his home with his infectious smile
and sincere personality. You know once you meet him that he loves God and loves
serving others. He participates in the Tuesday morning men’s Bible study at Lynch’s, attends community events, and revived the Milford Clergy group that meets once a month for lunch. You may
have seen him running on the trails or walking around town with his beautiful wife, Marianne. He
makes countless visits to parishioners in hospitals and at home, at all hours of the day and sometimes night. He is also enjoying being a first-time grandpa to his granddaughter, Kendall.
I have really enjoyed partnering in ministry with Doug. He had not worked with a deacon before, but
he made a concerted effort to read and educate himself about the order of deacons and how the
deacon and pastor ministries can complement each other and create a vital ministry together. We
also have many conversations about our ministry together. We each bring different perspectives to
our collaborative ministry. He encourages, challenges, and inspires me to embrace the Holy Spirit
within me and let it lead me to work, share God’s love, and serve others. We also share a commitment to serving in the conference and district of the UMC through lay servant training and the Michigan Area Camping program as well as other committees.
We are really looking forward to starting the Vital Church Initiative (VCI) this fall and leading our
church family toward vital and vibrant ministry in the future.
Most of you probably know that Doug has taken on the presidency of the Rotary Club of Huron
Valley for the coming year. I would ask that we all keep him in our prayers as he serves our
community and the international organization of Rotary in this important capacity, as well as being
an active pastor of our church. I am proud of him and proud to partner with him in the ministry of
Milford UMC; and most importantly, I am proud to call him friend and pastor.
So, “Hats off to you, Doug!” I can’t wait to see what God calls us to do next in the ministry of Milford
UMC!
Attention Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles

Please let me know if you'd like to learn more. - Pastor Doug

The United Methodist Camping season is fast approaching!
First, I would like to once again encourage everyone to register for a camping experience this summer. There really is something for everyone!
There are also some opportunities for paid employment and volunteer work this summer.
There is a need for the following at Wesley Woods:
- Summer Food Service Director/Head Cook –have had NO responses to date.
-There is an open position for (1) summer maintenance person
-There is an open position for (1) summer web tech – to do web postings and weekly camp video.
This is a list of Camp Dean needs for the summer. Camp Deans are those who put the program
together and coordinate the program and volunteer staff for the week. They are what we may
consider the “Captain of the ship” for the week.
These camps need deans:
Christians in Action CIA Middle school grades 7-9
Date; July 10-16
Wesley Woods: ACT 789 – full week elementary with two concurrent mini camps.
Grades 1-6 July 31-August 6
Wesley Woods: #whatsnext – 3-night young adult camp
ages 18-30 - August 14-17
Lake Michigan: Elementary FIT Faith Challenge – full week
grades 3-7 – June 26-July 2
This posting comes from George Ayoub, Executive Director.
Please prayerfully consider these needs and please contact me A.S.A.P.
Note: A.S.A.P.- means as soon as possible… but it also means: Always Say A Prayer!
Sooo, yes, please pray… for our ministry, and for the thousands of campers who will have the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Christ and experience God’s love this summer at one of the
camps. Please also pray for the hundreds of people who have dedicated time this summer to be
used as God’s instruments at camp!
Blessings,
Rev. George H. Ayoub

to see evidence of God in everyday life – something we call God
sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot! Your kids will also
participate in a hands-on mission project through a program called
Operation Kid-to-Kid, that will let the kids in our community show God’s mighty love to kids in Haiti!

June Operation Christmas Child - This month we are collecting toothbrushes, tooth paste, and water bottles. You can put them in the marked
collection basket in the fellowship hall. Thank you in advance for participating in this project.
THANK YOU! I would like to recognize the following people for their generous gift of time and talents to help us in our spiritual growth this past year
(and hopefully future years too!) They selflessly taught our Sunday School
classes as teachers and subs and also led our youth group. They are Nikki
Gurke, Melissa Vickery, Stacy Atkeson, Tracy Bruletti, Nancy Ebert, Gregg
Smith, Kelsey Shufflebarger, Dawn Brudi, Wayne & Pat Loder, Carolyn
Graves, Pastor Doug, Deacon Sherry, and our Education Committee members who facilitate our
children’s programming Christina Rockwell, Barb Harris, Maureen Bonhard, Regina Olari, Cathy
Dykstra and our fearless Youth leaders Cory & Julie Lupinacci. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!
Thank you for another great season of learning.
Say Cheese? We often take pictures during our children’s activities and we
would like permission from the parents to post some of these on our church
website and Facebook page so others can see the fun things we’re doing!
*We will not publish names, just photos. Karen Smith will be coming to parents with a permission form for this purpose to make sure we have your approval to do this. Thank you!
“Safe Sanctuaries”: Our church has a “Policy for the Protection of Youth
and Vulnerable Adults” which helps us ensure that we are entrusting our
loved ones into the care of those who have been cleared to work with them
safely. This policy protects our children AND our volunteers and is in compliance with our church’s insurance policy guidelines. A recently updated copy
is available in the church office. These background checks need to be repeated periodically so Karen Smith may be coming to you to renew your clearance. We want everyone to have a positive, uplifting experience in our church as we teach and learn about God’s great
love for us – and this policy is a necessary part of that, providing peace of mind for everyone. Thank
you for your cooperation and support!

God Inspired Turning Points-Serenity
By
Debbie Llewellyn
“God grant me the courage to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.”
I joked with my co-workers that the words of this short, powerful prayer (penned by American
theologian Reinhold Niebuhr) would be rolling off my tongue non-stop during my daily commute
dodging a multitude of impatient drivers, while traversing hundreds of orange cones and 20+ traffic
lights, courtesy of Revive I-275.
As I thought about the words, I had a spiritual epiphany. Niebuhr’s prayer is the work of genius. It’s
a one-sentence, problem-solving antidote.
Let’s take my commute for an example:
The things I cannot change - the closure of I-275 for months. My daily commute has more than
doubled time-wise.
Courage to change the things I can – I
can find another route; I can leave my
house earlier.
Wisdom to know the difference - The
construction project is scheduled for a
fixed period of time (even though I may
whine like it’s going to be for an eternity)
and I can adjust.
Give it a try – use this simple technique
to diminish the impact of something that
is upsetting your “bliss.”

Our Meals on Wheels delivery has been very successful so far in 2016. Ron Opfer,
Maureen Bonhard, Linda Lutz, Pastor Doug, Sue Quiney, Jan and Bob Olari, and Dave
Ebert have delivered meals. These deliveries are very important to the success of the

have found the experience to be very rewarding. The deliveries start about 10am and are
over before noon. Our next MOW week is June 20-24. Please let me or the church office
know if you would be interested in being on the list of Meals on Wheels drivers. We can always use

The Milford UMC ASP team will be departing for our work week in eastern Kentucky on June 25th. We will offer an opportunity to those who
cannot accompany us to help support our project. We are having a
Stock Sale on June 5th, 12th, and 19th. We will be in the social hall to
answer questions and accept any support you would like to give.
In past years many of you have also helped ASP by donating homemade cookies and small
toys. The cookies are used as snacks for our work teams and we also pass them out to our families
throughout the week we are there. The toys are distributed to children around our work sites and in
the community. This is a great way to let children who have little know that God’s people are praying
and thinking of them. The toys should be smaller in size since we will need to transport them. If you
have any questions, call Cheryl Smith at 248.310.9370. Thank you.
Thank you for Helping with the Clothing Sale! The ASP Team extends a hearty thank you to all
who made our clothing sale a success during the UMW Rummage Sale in May. We made over
$615 on the clothing sale. This will help us carry out our mission to Appalachia this summer! Thank
you for donating, helping, or buying clothes!
Stitching for Others – Prayer Quilts and Shawls. Please come and help us. We need
knitters, crocheters, sewers, cutters, ironers, etc. It is a wonderful fellowship group and
there is a job for everyone, no experience necessary. For more info call Thesia Wolf,

Vital United Methodist Churches, continued
Macatbong United Methodist Church is in Cabanatuan City, Philippines. They offer refuge to the afflicted and downtrodden. The church is growing and trains laity
to lead cell groups. They are serving 600 people per week in worship and have
45 regular cell groups with a maximum of 12 people in each group. Participants
pray, share devotions, share blessings and failures, and discuss the sermon of the week. People
are being nurtured and are growing deeper in their spiritual life. They cultivate listening, forgiveness,
openness, and sensitivity, and they take prophetic action. “Our love for God and his people keeps
us going until every soul has known the redeeming love of God. We will never get tired of making
disciples.”

How Open Minded Am I?
May God give us grace to live up to our tag line, “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open
Doors-The People of The United Methodist Church.” It’s easy to see closed mindedness in others, but it’s better to ask, “How open-minded am I?” We are all tempted
to judge prematurely or to refuse relevant information in favor of our prejudice.
“Lord, make me teachable, and give me a gracious spirit, and help me keep
growing, learning, and loving. Amen.”

Isn’t spring an amazing time!? I have
been unusually aware this spring of the
birds singing very early in the morning. I
have walked three mornings a week at
5:45 am for 5 years now (yes, year
round, outside) and for some reason, this year I
have really noticed how the birds greet the day so
boisterously. I love hearing it! It is also causing me
to wonder why I have struggled to greet each day
the same way when each day is a blessing! So, I
am going count each day a blessing and rejoice in
each morning!
