Often in my life I have felt like the circus performer who is spinning plates on the sticks. He runs from stick to stick, catching each plate, just before it falls off the stick. He spins it again and runs on to the next near tragedy, and it’s amazing how many plates he can keep spinning, but when he spins too many, he can’t keep up the pace for long. If you feel like you can’t keep up with every dimension of your life, welcome to the human race, but it doesn’t have to be a life-long rat-race. This summer in worship we want to remind you of a way to cope. It’s called, “The Rhythm of Life.” Specifically, we will address 4 aspects of life that are all important: Work, Rest, Worship, and Play. If one of them takes over your whole life, you are likely to burn out. God wants a better life for you. Upcoming Events Graduation and Choir Concert Sunday, June 5th, 9:30 Service VBS Work Bee (pg.4) Tuesday, June 21 10 - Noon Witness Movie Night (pg.8) Ice Cream Social Saturday, June 11th-6 pm Movie-”Inside Out” Have you heard the old saw about, “How does a mouse eat an elephant?” The answer is “One bite at a time.” In the same way, UMW Salad Luncheon overwhelming weeks can be broken into parts so that we focus on (pg. 6 & 15) one part at a time, and by God’s grace, we can begin to enjoy the Saturday, June 18th 11:30-2 pm various parts in themselves, and see how each one enriches our lives, and we can do more than Father’s Day cope; we can enjoy a more ASP Commissioning abundant life. Sunday, June 19th ASP Departure (pg. 13) Saturday, June 25th We plan to spend 2 Sundays on each theme, starting June 19. Don’t wait until another season of your life. Let God inspire you in all four of these aspects of your life, starting THIS summer! I love you all, Pastor Doug McMunn 1 Our Deacon - Rev. Sherry Foster This month I want to brag about my friend and colleague in ministry here at Milford UMC. The end of June brings the fifth anniversary of his tenure as our pastor and of our ministry together as a team of pastor and deacon. Pastor Doug McMunn has more energy than the Energizer Bunny (if that’s even possible!) He has integrated himself into the Milford community and made it his home with his infectious smile and sincere personality. You know once you meet him that he loves God and loves serving others. He participates in the Tuesday morning men’s Bible study at Lynch’s, attends community events, and revived the Milford Clergy group that meets once a month for lunch. You may have seen him running on the trails or walking around town with his beautiful wife, Marianne. He makes countless visits to parishioners in hospitals and at home, at all hours of the day and sometimes night. He is also enjoying being a first-time grandpa to his granddaughter, Kendall. I have really enjoyed partnering in ministry with Doug. He had not worked with a deacon before, but he made a concerted effort to read and educate himself about the order of deacons and how the deacon and pastor ministries can complement each other and create a vital ministry together. We also have many conversations about our ministry together. We each bring different perspectives to our collaborative ministry. He encourages, challenges, and inspires me to embrace the Holy Spirit within me and let it lead me to work, share God’s love, and serve others. We also share a commitment to serving in the conference and district of the UMC through lay servant training and the Michigan Area Camping program as well as other committees. We are really looking forward to starting the Vital Church Initiative (VCI) this fall and leading our church family toward vital and vibrant ministry in the future. Most of you probably know that Doug has taken on the presidency of the Rotary Club of Huron Valley for the coming year. I would ask that we all keep him in our prayers as he serves our community and the international organization of Rotary in this important capacity, as well as being an active pastor of our church. I am proud of him and proud to partner with him in the ministry of Milford UMC; and most importantly, I am proud to call him friend and pastor. So, “Hats off to you, Doug!” I can’t wait to see what God calls us to do next in the ministry of Milford UMC! Attention Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles “Grand Camp” at Camp Kinawind starts on Thursday, July 7, and ends on Saturday, July 9. A “grandparent” and a “grandchild” can enjoy quality time together in this beautiful northern Michigan setting. The dean is my friend, Rev. Mike Seymour. He will be there with his grandson, age 7. We often take pictures during our children’s activities and we would like permission from the parents to post some of these on our church website and Facebook page so others can see the fun things we’re doing! *We will not publish names, just photos. Karen Smith will be coming to parents with a permission form for this purpose to make sure we have your approval to do this. Thank you! “Safe Sanctuaries”: Our church has a “Policy for the Protection of Youth and Vulnerable Adults” which helps us ensure that we are entrusting our loved ones into the care of those who have been cleared to work with them safely. This policy protects our children AND our volunteers and is in compliance with our church’s insurance policy guidelines. A recently updated copy is available in the church office. These background checks need to be repeated periodically so Karen Smith may be coming to you to renew your clearance. We want everyone to have a positive, uplifting experience in our church as we teach and learn about God’s great love for us – and this policy is a necessary part of that, providing peace of mind for everyone. As I thought about the words, I had a spiritual epiphany. Niebuhr’s prayer is the work of genius. It’s a one-sentence, problem-solving antidote. Let’s take my commute for an example: The things I cannot change - the closure of I-275 for months. My daily commute has more than doubled time-wise. Courage to change the things I can – I can find another route; I can leave my house earlier. Wisdom to know the difference - The construction project is scheduled for a fixed period of time (even though I may whine like it’s going to be for an eternity) and I can adjust. Give it a try – use this simple technique to diminish the impact of something that is upsetting your “bliss.” FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT and ICE CREAM SOCIAL Saturday, June 11 6:00pm Featuring: Disney’s Inside Out 8 Congratulations Graduates Name: David Bonhard Graduating From: Milford High School Special Honors/Accomplishments: David was named Valedictorian, a 4 year KLAA Scholar Athlete, 4 year Varsity Soccer, 2 year Varsity Track, 2 time 1st team All-Conference in Soccer, 1st team All-KLAA in Soccer, 1 time All-Conference in Track, member of State Champion First Robotics HOT Team, a member of the National Honors Society, and has received the Regents Merit Scholarship to University of Michigan. We will be in the social hall to answer questions and accept any support you would like to give. In past years many of you have also helped ASP by donating homemade cookies and small toys. The cookies are used as snacks for our work teams and we also pass them out to our families throughout the week we are there. The toys are distributed to children around our work sites and in the community. This is a great way to let children who have little know that God’s people are praying and thinking of them. The toys should be smaller in size since we will need to transport them. If you have any questions, call Cheryl Smith at 248.310.9370. Thank you. Thank you for Helping with the Clothing Sale! The ASP Team extends a hearty thank you to all who made our clothing sale a success during the UMW Rummage Sale in May. We made over $615 on the clothing sale. May God give us grace to live up to our tag line, “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors-The People of The United Methodist Church.” It’s easy to see closed mindedness in others, but it’s better to ask, “How open-minded am I?” We are all tempted to judge prematurely or to refuse relevant information in favor of our prejudice. “Lord, make me teachable, and give me a gracious spirit, and help me keep growing, learning, and loving. I have been unusually aware this spring of the birds singing very early in the morning. I have walked three mornings a week at 5:45 am for 5 years now (yes, year round, outside) and for some reason, this year I have really noticed how the birds greet the day so boisterously. I love hearing it! It is also causing me to wonder why I have struggled to greet each day the same way when each day is a blessing! So, I am going count each day a blessing and rejoice in each morning! Our Staff Ministers– All members of the church Pastor– Rev. Douglas J. McMunn Deacon- Rev.
