Title: Plural Nouns Parallel Instructional/Lesson Plan (Hunter/Betts) Accommodations/Modifications Subject: 5th Grade Language Arts Time: 60 minutes Materials Needed: *Plural Nouns Study Guide *Sticky Notes *Pencils *Red Pen *Computer/Google Slides/Projector *Whiteboard/Dry Erase Marker *Rally Coach Kagan Activity *Plural Nouns Handout *Focus Student 1 is a student who struggles with appropriate behavior. *Focus Student 2 is an advanced student that is very determined and eager to challenge herself. Lesson Objective(s): *In partners, the 5th grade students will form plural nouns from singular nouns by completing a Rally Coach activity with 90% accuracy. *Individually, the 5th grade students will recognize plural nouns by proofreading a paragraph with 85% accuracy. *Individually, the 5th grade students will create four sentences using at least one plural noun per sentence with 85% accuracy. Student Friendly I Can Statements: *I can form plural nouns from singular nouns. *I can recognize plural nouns when proofreading. *I can create sentences using plural nouns. Standards Addressed: Missouri Learning Standards L. 1. A. 5. A. explain and use the 8 parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection. *Before the start of this lesson, the instructor will conference with Focus Student 1 to inform him of the class agenda for this day. L. 1. B. 2. Spell and use the plural of nouns by adding –es to nouns ending in -s, -ss, sh, - ch, or -x h. use nouns that change their spelling in plural form. L. 1. B. 3. Spell plural words that change ‘y’ to ‘ies’. Before the Lesson: Anticipatory Set: *To connect what we have learned in the previous lesson, students will come up with five common nouns and record them on a sticky note. *After writing five common nouns, students will then be prompted to change these singular nouns into plural nouns with an arrow from the singular to the plural noun. (Students will come back to these sticky notes at the end of the lesson.) *The instructor should make sure to call on Focus Student 1 at least one time throughout the lesson. During the Lesson (Procedure): Instructional Input: *The instructor will use a Google Docs Slide to explain plural nouns. The Slide includes nouns adding an –s,–es,–y, -f, -o, and nouns ending in special ways. The slide also includes several in-class examples and a short video that explains ending of plural words using “tails”. *After the presentation, students will “recap” the rules for plural nouns that they learned throughout the Google Slide. *Everything on this Slide is on the hard copy “Plural Nouns Study Guide” that the students are given prior to the lesson. Model: *During the Kagan activity, Focus Student 1 will be working with an advanced student that will help him stay on task. *Throughout the Google Slide, the instructor will model each rule for plural nouns by using think-aloud strategies. After each rule is explained, the instructor will model turning a singular noun into a plural noun. *The instructor will also model the Check for Understanding/Guided Practice Kagan activity before students begin. Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: *In order to check for understanding, students will work in pairs to complete a Kagan activity. The activity used has students look at plural nouns by adding -es or –s with a Rally Coach/ Sage-N-Scribe strategy. *Students are provide with a handout. Student take turns working with their partner to write the plural form of the noun provided. *After this Kagan activity, we will go over the answers as a class and coach each other as to why specific answers are correct. After the Lesson: Closure (summary): *Students will look back at the nouns they created on their sticky notes at the beginning of class. *Students will determine if they correctly or incorrectly pluralized the words. If incorrect, students correct their sticky note with a red pen. Independent Practice/Follow-up Activities: *Students will complete a handout regarding plural nouns ending in –f or –fe. Students then proofread a paragraph that has seven mistakes in plurals. Students are to use the proper proofreading mark to delete the incorrect word and write the correct word above it. Students also write four sentences using at least one plural noun in each sentence. *During Independent Practice, Focus Student 2 will have an extended activity. This student will look at a close read she is completing in another class. She will read the article and circle plural nouns she finds within the text.
