We would also like to take this one last opportunity to thank you for your continued patronage over the past year. It is truly our pleasure to have you as a member and we enjoy serving your needs. Sincerely, Norm Haglund General Manager Golf Course Update The course is progressing nicely with the overseed well established and looking good. The greens also remain in good shape and we are ready for the cooler weather. As things slow down for us from a maintenance standpoint, it's nice to see play pick up and lots of people enjoying the course. But with the cooler weather now upon us, the growth of the turf in the non overseeded areas has slowed down along with the ability for it to recover from wear and tear. Wear patterns from cart traffic, divots, and ball marks add up faster than the turf can recover and this is where the entire membership can play a strong role in helping us preserve the quality of the course conditions. Topping the list is cart wear as it is the most damaging and difficult to recover from in the winter. The most common habit we see is pulling off the path around the tees and greens. It’s basic human nature to do this but it produces excessive wear on the turf in the playing areas. The second biggest problem we see is following the same beaten path with the cart. This is also human nature, but we ask that you try to go 90 degrees as much as possible or follow the least worn path where you see the strongest looking turf. If it is a busy day, try walking to your ball instead of taking the cart as you are probably going to be waiting to hit your shot anyway. Ball marks on the greens are especially damaging in the winter as the greens go into a dormant stage. With our paspalum grass these marks are very prevalent and we prefer that you fix them with a ball mark tool. However, if you do not have a ball mark tool the best way to fix ball marks is with your putter. Simply press the edges toward the center, trying to flatten and close the hole. Finally, the entire maintenance staff and I would personally like to thank those who contributed to the employee Holiday fund. That extra money means a lot for the crew whom almost all have children and families. See you on the course Friendly Advice Isn’t Always “Friendly” We all play golf for many reasons, the least of which allows us to enjoy the company we choose. Love of the game is near the top of the list of how to have fun on the course, and with that enjoyment should go a true sense of respect and fairness. The Rules of Golf are many times stretched in the cloak of a “friendly” game. However, when a few bucks are on the line, or protection of the entire field is at stake, we should do our best to strictly follow the Rules. Since golf is a game of high integrity, those Rules make for an even playing field. In playing many different formats of the Game, I’ve noticed that players will innocently inquire as to what club was used, how a putt breaks, or “how should I play this?” These innocent questions are all related to Rules pertaining to advice. Another common practice is to ask a fellowcompetitor to leave his ball where it lies on the putting green as opposed to marking it. This is considered, under Rule 22, to be assisting play of the hole. And, if both players agree to leave the ball in an assisting position, both players are disqualified. According to the Rules, “advice is any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club or the method of making a stroke.” In the past, asking for exact distances on the course was prohibited, but with the advent of electronic measuring devices, that information can now be shared with fellow competitors, provided there is a Local Rule allowing their use. (S.L.C.C. allows them.) For exact instances of what is good advice and what is against the Rules, look up Rule 8 in the Rules of Golf, or ask your P.G.A. Professional. That’s my best advice.
