The Largest Number
Teaching Note
Exponential Form After listing the numbers and their
names ask: How many 10s are in 1,000? Point out that 100 is
10 × 10 and therefore 1,000 is 10 × 10 × 10. One way
mathematicians write 1,000 is 103 which means 10 × 10 ×
10. Work together with the students to write each power of
ten number in exponential form (e.g., 104, 105, etc.).
Expanded Notation After writing the powers of ten
numbers in exponential form, write the following number on
the board: 462,534 and ask students to read the number.
Then say: We are going to write this number in expanded
form using exponents. How many hundred thousands are
there? How do we write one hundred thousand in
exponential form? (105) 4 one hundred thousands would be
written: 4 × 105. Work together with the students to write
the rest of the number in expanded form with exponents. (4
× 105 + 6 × 104 + 2 × 103 + 5 × 102 + 3 × 10 + 4)

After students write the number, ask them to write the
number in expanded form using exponents. (8 × 104 +
9 × 103 + 5 × 102 + 6 × 10 + 3) Then continue with the
activity as written.
