January has been designated National School Board appreciation
month. As usual, I feel honored to recognize our six member board.
As citizen leaders, these individuals are charged with the unenviable
task of making tough decisions on a myriad of complex educational
issues—many times balancing the needs of our students with the
need for property tax generated revenue. In my opinion, they do an
excellent job with this difficult responsibility. Our students continue
to improve their performance—in the classroom as well as in their
extracurricular activities.
I feel fortunate to serve a board that is student-centered and
committed to providing an outstanding education to every student
that walks through our doors. With that, I would like to thank
and recognize our board for their time, effort and commitment to
education and the community at large.

News From Mrs. Haun
6th and 7th Grade Reading
Sixth and seventh graders are starting off the second semester with novel studies. Novel
studies are different from reading for enjoyment as we take an in depth look at the
elements of fiction – exposition, rising action, conflict, climax, resolution, mood, theme,
and author’s purpose. The 6th graders are reading Holes by Louis Sachar; the 7th
graders are reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We will also compare and contrast the
novels with the movies that are based on both books.
Following the novel studies we will begin to prepare for the NeSA reading tests. This
year’s tests will incorporate new items such as evidence-based selected responses as well as
text dependent analysis questions in which students have to respond in writing to a question
about the selection.
8th Grade English
Eighth graders are preparing for the NeSA writing test that will be taken on January
27. The mode for the state writing test is descriptive writing. Students are asked to describe
a person, place, or thing by responding to the prompt given. We have done several descriptive
pieces this year including a practice test scored at the ESU in October and most recently and
practice test scored by myself and peers. Additionally, we have looked at sample papers and
scored them using language directly from the rubric. We will continue to prepare the next two
weeks. It is important that students are at school and well rested the day of the test.
Thank You From Mr. Tarr
Thank you. With just a couple more major tournaments coming up, I need to
thank you as boosters, patrons, parents and family members for the fine work you
have all done for activities so far. In the past month we have hosted our winter
basketball tournament and our wrestling invite. Both went off without a hitch and
we had compliments from the schools that attended. All are returning because
you did a great job of making it happen. Please pat yourselves on the back for all
the work you did to make these events successful. The money that was raised will
be used to get things that our activity programs can use.
On Friday Feb. 5th we will be hosting the ECNC Wrestling meet, starting at 2:00PM.
This will be in the middle of the day, and there is a great possibility that our girls will
be playing basketball that night. We are asking for help to either work the tables or work
concessions. It is a big undertaking that we as a school can do if everyone who can help takes
part. Please give me a call, 402-580 0585 or the school and let us know if you can help. You are
great, thank you. Jack Tarr CMAA, AD Malcolm Public Schools

Pressing On
Pre
By Patti
P
Puterbaugh, K-12 Reading Specialist
A
Another
semester has begun and workshop students are back to class with a great
attitude.
As I continue to build on what they know, I look forward to each student
a
e
experiencing
growth as a reader.
In
I first grade we are working on comprehension skills. These skills include using
picture
cues and context clues to read new words, and bringing to mind what we
p
know about the subject before we read. We are also working on decoding skills by
kn
reading short vowel books.
rea
Second graders are also learning decoding skills by reading books and writing words
Seco
have the digraphs ch, sh, th, and wh. Inferring is the comprehension skill we are
that ha
working
ki with
i this week. Our book is entitled Sink or Float. We will be testing different
objects to find out if they sink or float. We will use knowledge they already have to hypothesize what the
object will do.
Third graders are learning how to look closely at a fiction story and find the parts of the plot. They
are also working on decoding strategies using the REWARDS strategy. They are currently working on
finding vowel pairs, prefixes, and syllables in multisyllabic words. Then they apply what they know to
reading words. This presents a challenge for them, but they are ready to meet the challenge.
Fourth and fifth graders are learning how to look carefully at a nonfiction article. The topic this week
in fourth grade is discerning how a person becomes and stays healthy. The topic in fifth grade is
determining the point of view of characters from the Revolutionary War. These lessons should equip
students to read text more strategically in the content areas.
Creative Writing Class
C
By: Mrs. Pulec
B
Every semester I am posed with the following question: If I join your creative
E
writing class, what will I have to do. I think some students are surprised when
w
my answer continues past the typical, “Well, you write stories.” My response might
m
sound more like, “Well, you write stories, illustrate comics and a write a book, create
so
advertisements and a magazine, etc.” Students will find that there are many different
adv
types of
o writing we develop.
In this class we have written and created many pieces: we write and illustrate a children’s
book, we create a comic strip, students develop a magazine of their choosing with articles
and advertisements, they also write a historical fiction story, they create a poem, and
sometimes even their own obituary. Now, that is an interesting first day, when they walk
in and ask what the new writing is for the week and I respond with, “You are writing your
obituary.”
Due to the different activities, students have appreciated this class and the different ways
the class approaches writing. I created the class to cover various pieces because I wanted
students, especially students who feel they are not writers, to experience writing in a
whole new way. To see that writing can be more than just words on lined paper. Writing
can come alive in many different ways and be an experience that’s enjoyable.

PARENT TEACHERS
CONFERENCES

you have any questions about Parent/Teacher
Conferences, please call Westfall Elementary or
the Jr/Sr High School at 796-2151. If you need
