Un fleuve flows into the sea, whereas une rivière flows into another river or lake, generally speaking. Also, the toilet, as in the bathroom, is called les toilettes. This book portrays the toilet as a fixture, not a room. The appearance of the genitalia has prompted inquiries from several readers. Specifically concerning the uniform size, omission of hair, and lack of distinguishing features. While I empathize with readers’ anatomic concerns and preferences, my interest is in creating consistent, simple and easily recognizable genital icons that do not distract (too much) from the overall vocabulary word. iv Preface Language is about making connections. It's also about imagining what an airplane would look like with a penis. This book aims to burn into your visual memory feminine and masculine articles by combining biological gender with grammatical gender. Libraries and booksellers are never short of tedious, text-heavy language books that take themselves too seriously. With Feminine/Masculine Books, I hope to capture the heat of the meat of language-study by visualizing vocabulary as it was never meant to be portrayed - with genitalia. The idea for the series first came to me while I was teaching English at a junior high school in rural Japan. I was the only native English-speaking foreigner in my community and for better or worse, I spent most of my time alone with my thoughts. It was during one of these isolated jam sessions that I was perusing a copy of Point-It (the pocket-size picture dictionary for travelers), and I began to wonder what foreign language visual dictionaries v 6 18 Be on the lookout for other exciting titles by Feminine/Masculine Books:
