A Note on the Text and Images
In French, there are two terms for river. Un fleuve
flows into the sea, whereas une rivière flows into
another river or lake, generally speaking. Also, the
toilet, as in the bathroom, is called les toilettes. This
book portrays the toilet as a fixture, not a room.
The appearance of the genitalia has prompted inquiries from several readers. Specifically concerning
the uniform size, omission of hair, and lack of distinguishing features. While I empathize with readers’ anatomic concerns and preferences, my interest
is in creating consistent, simple and easily recognizable genital icons that do not distract (too much)
from the overall vocabulary word.

Preface
Language is about making connections. It's also
about imagining what an airplane would look like
with a penis. This book aims to burn into your visual
memory feminine and masculine articles by combining biological gender with grammatical gender.
Libraries and booksellers are never short of tedious,
text-heavy language books that take themselves too
seriously. With Feminine/Masculine Books, I hope
to capture the heat of the meat of language-study
by visualizing vocabulary as it was never meant to
be portrayed - with genitalia.
The idea for the series first came to me while I was
teaching English at a junior high school in rural
Japan. I was the only native English-speaking foreigner in my community and for better or worse, I
spent most of my time alone with my thoughts. It
was during one of these isolated jam sessions that
I was perusing a copy of Point-It (the pocket-size
picture dictionary for travelers), and I began to
wonder what foreign language visual dictionaries
