Foreword
Introduction
Foreword
The diagnosis of a food allergy during childhood poses several challenges for
both parents and the healthcare professional involved in their care. The
mainstay of treatment involves the elimination of the offending food (e.g. milk),
whilst the diet remains nutritionally complete and promotes normal growth and
development. Such an avoidance diet, however, requires being practical for the
parents whilst allowing the child to achieve their feeding milestones (i.e.
development of taste and texture tolerance). Accomplishing this can be quite a
challenge, especially in young children with multiple food allergies.
The introduction of weaning foods is a major feeding milestone. However what
is supposed to be a time of taste and texture exploration can turn into a feeding
nightmare for many parents caring for a child with food allergies. Hypoallergenic
weaning foods that are enriched with essential nutrients may provide a good
starting point for parents and allow them to gain confidence in the weaning
process and expand the diet. These foods may also contribute energy, protein
and essential vitamins and minerals to the diets of children who are lacking
these nutrients due to their elimination diets.
Although nutritional management of children with food allergies remains
challenging, the appropriate use of enriched hypoallergenic weaning foods may
assist in ensuring nutritional adequacy, allowing for the development of normal
feeding behaviour and reducing parental anxiety.

Introducing your child to new foods
Introduction
Introducing your child to new foods
The introduction of certain semi-solid/solid foods into your child’s diet is often
referred to by a doctor or dietitian as the “food challenge” phase.
This should be done in very small quantities over time to help you understand
which foods your child may be allergic to. Before you start, you should take
advice from your child’s doctor or dietitian.
5 golden rules for introducing new foods
1
Start by introducing foods least likely to cause an allergic
reaction
2
Introduce new foods one at a time and only when your child
is well
3
Know how frequently you can introduce each new food
4
Give only small amounts of foods at first
5
4
Speak to your doctor or dietitian for advice.
This way, if your child has an allergic reaction it can be quickly identified.
You may need to wait between introducing certain foods. Your child's
doctor or dietitian will be able to advise you on this.
Try a pea-sized amount initially. If your child shows no symptoms,
gradually increase the amount over several days.
Continue to give your child the foods that are tolerated
Introduction
What if your child reacts to new foods?
5
What if your child reacts to new foods?
l
l
l
l
Stop giving this food to your child immediately
Record the date of the reaction and the symptoms that occurred
Discuss it with your doctor or dietitian
Wait approximately 1-3 days before introducing another new food
“Should I reintroduce problem foods?”
Most food allergies are outgrown, but some are not. There’s usually no need to
avoid foods if they no longer cause a problem for your child. However it’s best
to ask your child’s doctor or dietitian about when and how to reintroduce
problem foods back into their diet.
Weaning
Introduction
Weaning
When to wean
Each child should be managed individually and developmental signs of
readiness for solid food in the child, and parental opinions, should be taken into
consideration when advising on the ideal age to begin weaning.
Signs of developmental readiness:
l
Can sit up unsupported
l
Showing interest in other people’s eating
l
Chewing fists
l
Waking during the night when previously had slept through
l
Crying between feeds – child still appears to be hungry after
increasing milk feeds for a few days
Developmental signs such as these are usually seen between 4-6 months.
However, guidance on when to start weaning varies and you should always
consult with your doctor or dietitian as to when is right for your child.
Colour
Smell
Weaning
Texture
Taste
Weaning is not just about the taste and texture of the new foods you choose to
introduce your child to. Remember that the sight and smell of the food is also
very stimulating to the child.
6
Weaning
Introduction
Colours
Children are stimulated by different colours.
Vegetables and fruits are great first taste foods and offer a huge variety of
colours that can be used at each of the different stages of weaning.
Top row from left; Melon, Mushroom, Red Pepper, Red Onion, Yellow Pepper. Second row from left;
Green Beans, Beetroot, Kiwi Fruit, Cauliflower, Tomatoes. Third row from left; Green Lentils, Strawberries,
Baked Beans, Kidney Beans, Sweetcorn. Fourth row from left; Potato, Sweet Potato, Red Cabbage, Green Pepper,
Apricots. Fifth row from left; Celery, Spinach, Leeks, Carrot, Cannellini Beans.
Smell
Foods may be the same colour such as potato, onion and cauliflower or
broccoli, peas and green pepper, but each have a very distinctive smell.
Smell is an important part of tasting foods. Smell triggers saliva production in
the mouth which helps the child to taste and swallow the food properly.
It also aids production of digestives juices in the
stomach which assists with digestion.
7
Weaning
Introduction
Texture
Different textures can easily be obtained with the same foods by altering the
amount of time mashing or blending of each food.
Samples from the smoothest stages can be added to the next stage to ease
transition.

blended (1 minute) add a little water

What is Neocate Spoon?
Introduction
What is Neocate Spoon?
Neocate Spoon is an hypoallergenic amino acid-based food for special
medical purposes. Neocate Spoon powder mixes with water to form
an unflavoured "spoonable" consistency. Every portion contains
essential vitamins and minerals to promote balanced nutrition in
infants and young children with cows' milk allergy and multiple food
protein intolerance. Neocate Spoon is suitable from 6 months of age.
Directions for use
The total daily intake of Neocate Spoon should be determined by a doctor or
dietitian only, and is dependent on age, bodyweight, and medical condition of the
child. For children starting on solids, the consistency of Neocate Spoon can be
altered by adding more or less water as required.
Preparation
1. Wash hands thoroughly and clean the preparation area.
2. Add the prescribed amount of Neocate Spoon into a clean bowl.
3. Gradually add the required amount of water whilst stirring with a clean feeding
spoon. Mix until thickened – this may take several minutes.
4. To alter the consistency add more or less water as required.
5. Discard any remaining product if not used within 1 hour of preparation.
Storage
Store unopened sachets in a cool, dry place. Opened sachets should be kept in
an airtight container and used within two days.
Adding Neocate Spoon to weaning foods
Neocate Spoon can easily be added to foods at each of the weaning stages.
Simply make up the recommended amount of Neocate Spoon following the
instructions on the box or as specified by your doctor or dietitian and use the
recipes contained within this book.
For simplicity all recipes include either half or full sachets of Neocate Spoon.
These measurements equate to:
¼ sachet = 9g = 2 heaped teaspoons
½ sachet = 18g = 4 heaped teaspoons
1 sachet = 37g = 8 heaped teaspoons
Make sure the foods are cooled before stirring in
the Neocate Spoon and serving to the baby.
