Exalted Ruler’s Corner
By Ed Furbee, Exalted Ruler
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year!
A year ago I discussed the sociology concept of the Third Place. Sometimes we need
to remember how blessed we truly are. The Third Place comes from The Great Good
Place by Ray Oldenburg. In his work, Ray says that the first place is home. The second
place is work (where those of us still in the work force spend most of our time). And
that the third place is a social place that remains separate from the other two. The
third place is described with the following characteristics:
 Free or inexpensive
 Food and drink, while not essential, are important
 Highly accessible: proximate for many (walking distance)
 Involves regulars – those who habitually congregate there
 Thank
Welcoming and comfortable

new friends old friends can be found there.
I believe we meet all of those characteristics (at least for me we do). What’s more, there are several points that I like
to consider in which the Lodge offers to truly make it the Third Place!
1. Free or inexpensive: While we are private organization, we are a true bargain in terms of memberships
cost. Membership for a member and spouse is less than fifty cents a day.
2. Food and drink, while not essential, are important: We have a lounge with a professional staff that caters
to us. We have a kitchen that prepares a wonderful fare. Something special happens to people who share a
meal. If you take this in combination with the above, we do not have an assessment for the lounge like a
Country Club would. In other words, you are not forced to support a restaurant here as you would at a
Country Club. I had members recently tell me they were Country Club members and their restaurant
assessment is $110 a month whether you eat there or not.
3. Highly accessible and within walking distance for many: While I am unaware of anyone who walks here,
there are many who could. The Lodge is close to most members’ homes or
places of business.
4. Involves regulars – those who habitually congregate there: There are

many members who you can set your watch by when they will walk into
the lounge for meetings, events, or just to hang out at the bar!

As we wrap up the year with the holiday season, please rekindle your relationships here at the best third place
with the Best People On Earth. In an effort to make sure everyone is aware of what the Lodge is doing, I would
like to remind members that we now have additional methods of communicating to keep you abreast on all of
the daily activities and events at the lodge.

Lastly, we have started using evite.com to send invitations to events (again using the email list from the Gmail

make 842 million stops on

2017 Dues Increase Notice Reminder: Voting on December 6, 2016
On Tuesday December 6, 2016 the Resolution to increase Dues will be voted upon.
This notice in the newsletter serves as the thirty-day notice as required by statue.
This Lodge faces increasing operation cost each and every year. While we have enjoyed adding members
each year, it is often offset by the loss of an equal number of members each year. Since moving to
Franklin, our Lodge has subsidized the bulk of the operational cost with the income derived from our
investment accounts, unlike when the dues were subsidized by the illegal gaming machines that were in
the Downtown and Brentwood locations. Additionally, this Lodge has not added to the principal of the
investment account in well over a decade. A third revenue stream that has not increased in over a decade
is the Lodge yearly dues. The portion of the total $153 dues that we each paid for this fraternal year that
actually stays at our Lodge is $122.00 $31 of the $153 goes to the State and Grand Lodge. We have been
advised that the Grand Lodge Assessment is increasing by 50 cents per annum. With these facts is mind I
resolve that By-Laws in regards to the dues of the Nashville-Franklin Lodge #72 increase from a total of
$153 per year ($122 to us and $31.50 to the State and Grand Lodges) to $200 per year ($168.50 to us and
$31.50 to the State and Grand Lodges) for all members with the exception of Life Members.
Since a decision must be made prior to dues notices being issued for the 2017-2018 fraternal year the
vote will be on December 8 our only meeting in December. The notice will be in the Newsletter.
Respectfully,
Stephen Hensley
