This program serves children from kindergarten thru 8th grade and provides them with opportunities participate in a reading challenge throughout the summer months, take part in three exciting events and share in weekly craft projects. We invite everyone to attend our kick-off event “Super Scuba Divin’” on Saturday, June 6th presented by Brunswick Scuba. There will be an interactive exercise that allows children to try on a scuba mask and other equipment along with an education video. We will also have games, face painting and light refreshments. A “Living Coral Reef Aquarium” with be our second event taking place on Saturday, July 11th and will be presented by Judy Goodwin. This program focuses on life on a coral reef and will include a dive suit display, craft and handouts for each child. Children will be able to play games and enjoy refreshments. “Wonderful Water Pets” will be our final event presented by Noah’s Last Stop out of Farmville on Saturday, August 8th. Children will learn the basics of starting an aquarium for different types of fish, what and how to feed the fish, and ideal aquarium decorations. Entertainment will include a skit in addition to games and refreshments. All three events will be presented at each branch of the library system. The program schedule will also be the same: at the Crewe Library from 9:30 am to 11 am; at the Burkeville Library from noon to 1:30 pm; and at the Blackstone Library from 2:30 pm to 4 pm. FREE books will be given to each child compliments of the Friends of the Blackstone Library and support was also provided by the Friends of the Crewe Library. Children are invited to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge and the first 10 children at each library to register for the reading challenge on June 6th will receive a free goldfish. There will be weekly incentive prizes for those who reach their weekly reading goal and they will place their name on the undersea display board. Their names will be placed in the prize drawing happening at the end of the program. We strive to encourage children to continue to read through the summer months, help them discover all the wonderful learning experiences they can have at their local library; provide a reading program that challenges them to read more; to foster in our youth a love of reading and the real fun found in books.
