Terms and Conditions
Race for the Line - Terms and Conditions
1. ELIGIBILITY. This competition is open to students in years 3-11 in any Primary and Secondary Schools located
in England and Wales (each a “School”). Employees of Microsoft, BLOODHOUND or The Learning Partnership or
its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising or promotion agencies are not eligible to be a part of any Team (as defined
below) entered by a School, nor are members of these employees’ families (defined as parents, children, siblings,
spouse and life partners).
2. ENTRY.
Team formation and registration
•
•
•
•
•
Each School may form as many school teams as it likes (each a “Team”) and enter those Teams
into the competition provided that:
(i) each Team consists of no more than 4 students from the relevant School;
(ii) no student shall be a member of more than one Team; and
(iii) pupils who are members of a Team entered into the competition must be sponsored by the
School at which they attend.
Each School must first register with its local race hub found on the map at
www.racefortheline.com confirming the number of teams it wishes to enter in the forum of the race
HUB community and arrange to attend a race briefing at the HUB.
Each school must create its own school STEM community by registering its required details (as set out
on the below website) and the names of its Teams at www.racefortheline.com . This will enable each
School to receive entry codes in the school community and confirmation of registration by email. Each
School must input those entry codes when it enters each of its Teams’ speed testing times onto the
competition leader board on the competition’s website –
www.racefortheline.com (the “Competition Website”) (please also refer to section
entitled"speed testing" below.)
Each School must also register details of its Teams at www.racefortheline.com by clicking on the map
of local Race HUBs, finding your local Race HUB and joining the relevant HUB community.
Teams must complete all activities required by this competition on school premises and with
appropriate supervision by the School or at the local Race HUB under supervision from accredited
practitioners in the HUB.
Race Car Kits, BBC Micro:bits and Building Rocket Cars
•
•
•
•
Each School registering to take part in the competition must use standard Race Car Kits supplied by
BLOODHOUND SSC education Limited or The Learning Partnership. Com Trading Ltd.
Schools may order these either:
(i) from a local Race HUB – each Race HUB may make available a certain number of free Kits at
competition briefings in NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2016 for Schools which have created their own
STEM collaboration community on Dendrite (www.racefortheline.com) and registered the required
details above (subject to availability) by OCTOBER 31st 2016.
(ii) by purchasing Kits from the Dendrite on-line shop accessed in the Race HUB community at
www.racefortheline.com
Each Team shall build one rocket car for entry into the competition (please refer to section entitled
“Speed Testing” below (each a “Rocket Car”).
Each Rocket Car must, at all times, be built solely and exclusively from:
(i) any materials contained in one Kit (for the avoidance of doubt, not all materials contained in the Kit
are required to be used to build the Rocket Car); and
(ii) a BBC Micro:bit which may be provided to its School by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
Each Team can programme its BBC Micro:bit, using www.codethemicrobit.com – to measure and
capture the acceleration of the Rocket Car and insert it into its Rocket Car.
Speed Testing
•
•
Each Team can test fire the Rocket Car using an air pump which is available for purchase through the
online HUB shop.
Each team must race their cars using the firing of a rocket motor supplied by the HUB in a sponsored
kit or contained in purchased Kits (one time use). Races must use supplied race tracks, timing gates
and launchers, available for use for free at Race HUBs on open race days, or by appointment through
the army accredited rocketeer network (via the Race HUB) or can be purchased from the shop.
•
•
•
•
•
•
Each Team must monitor and record the top speed achieved by its Rocket Car during each race day via
the BBC Micro:bit timing gate. To assist in recording the speed of each Rocket Car, Schools may either
purchase timing gates from the on-line HUB shop at www.racefortheline.com or attend a race day at
their local Race HUB where timing gates and launchers may be made available free of charge (subject
to availability).
Between each test run, Teams may wish to reshape or remodel their Rocket Car to achieve faster speeds.
Modeling spreadsheets can be downloaded to assist teams in working out likely top speeds of their cars
under rocket motors.
Each School must enter into the leader-board on the Competition Website the top speed achieved and
max acceleration data by each of its Team’s Rocket Cars using the entry codes obtained by that School.
For each of its Teams, each School must (i) post on the Competition Website video evidence
showing the run of the car and (ii) link the video to that Team’s fastest time on the leader board
on the Competition Website.
The top 2 Primary school and top 2 Secondary school Teams on the leader board of the Race HUB at the
closing date for race entries of 17th March 2017 which have (i) achieved the fastest speeds as referred to
the on leader board on the Competition Website and (ii) provided the evidence referred to above (each
a “Qualifying Team”) will qualify for entry into the competition’s regional finals in England & Wales to
be held at 15 regional Hubs between the 20th March - 7th April 2017. The winning Primary team and
secondary team from each regional finals leader board will be invited to the national finals to be held at
the end of June 2017 (details of which will be provided to each School which has entered a Qualifying

At the National Finals, each School with a Qualifying Team must send the team to the National Final to
