East Tennessee State University Upward Bound
November 21-24
According to a series of studies from the U.S. and Europe, the answer is
yes. Optimism helps people cope with disease and recover from
surgery. Even more impressive is the impact of a positive outlook on
overall health and longevity. Research tells us that an optimistic outlook
early in life can predict better health and a lower rate of death during
follow-up periods of 15 to 40 years.

Sign up to take college admissions tests in the spring. You can
register online or through your school. Don’t forget you have up to two
free ACT fee waivers through Upward Bound you can use and our
online study program, ePrep, can help you prepare for the ACT.
Begin a search for financial aid sources. National sources for
financial aid can be accessed by print through the College Board’s
Scholarship Handbook and electronically by using the College Board’s
Scholarship Search (bigfuture.collegeboard.org/scholarship-search).
Don’t overlook local and state aid sources. Many colleges have
scholarship information listed on their website, and there is typically a
scholarship of the week on our weekly scoop!
Meet with your counselor or Upward Bound staff to discuss ways to
improve your college preparation and selection processes. Let
someone know what steps you have taken and what you need help
with to make the best decision about which college to attend.
Explore AP and Dual Enrollment. The Advances Placement Program
(AP) helps high school students achieve their college dreams each
year. If you’re in AP classes, register for the AP exams given in May.
Talk with your school counselors about opportunities to take dual
enrollment courses as well. Achieving a high enough score on an AP
exam or taking dual enrollment courses are two ways you can earn
college credit while still in high school.
Stressed out?! Take a few minutes and color
this picture. Coloring can help you relax
and increase mental clarity—give it a try!

The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 and included
50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians and lasted three days.
Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until over 200 years
later! Sarah Josepha Hale, the woman who actually wrote the classic
song “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” convinced President Lincoln in 1863
to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, after writing letters for 17
years campaigning for this to happen.
No turkey on the menu at the first Thanksgiving: Historians say that
no turkey was served at the first Thanksgiving! What was on the
menu? Deer or venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel and fish.
They probably ate pumpkins, but no pumpkin pies. They also didn't
eat mashed potatoes or cranberry relish, but they probably ate
cranberries.
Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners! In 1953, Swanson had so
much extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should
package it onto aluminum trays with other sides like sweet potatoes
— and the first TV dinner was born!
Presidential pardon of a turkey: Each year, the president of the U.S
pardons a turkey and spares it from being eaten for Thanksgiving
dinner. The first turkey pardon ceremony started with President
Truman in 1947. President Obama pardoned a 45-pound turkey
named Courage, who has flown to Disneyland and served as Grand
Marshal of the park's Thanksgiving Day parade!
