WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Maine women’s basketball program has had two lives. The first consisted of 11 seasons between the 1920 and 1931. In 1931, each of the four women’s sports programs in existence during the 1920s were discontinued. Following several years of informal organization during the early 1970s, the basketball program was resurrected in the fall of 1975 as an officially funded sport by the University. Liz Coffin, one of the most dominating players in UM history, averaged 20.3 points and 10 rebounds per game. She is one of only four Maine players to score more than 2,000 points in her career, and holds University records for most rebounds (380) in one season and in four seasons (1,351). The Bears scored over 100 points four times with Blodgett scoring a still-standing UM record 52 points vs. Towson. She was MVP of the conference, first team all-New England, and first team, academic All-America. In the NCAA first round game at LSU, where the home team prevailed by only nine points, she scored 34 and Jamie Cassidy had a UM post-season tournament record five blocks. Maine teams, during Blodgett’s tenure on campus, won 12 straight AE tournament games, a record unparalled in league history. Front row, l-r, Kristi Carver, Kristen McCormick, Amy Vachon, Tri-Capts. March 12, 1921 – New Hampshire 15, Maine 13 Following is a report by Coach James Baldwin of the first game ever played by a Maine women’s team.... “This was the first varsity game in any sport ever played at the U. of M. by a girls’ team. There were three 10-minute periods. When time was up the score was 13-13. In the overtime play the first basket was scored by New Hampshire, thereby giving them the game. The game was well played and evenly contested by both teams. About 300 attended the game in Alumni Gymnasium. The referee was Miss Geneva Smith. Players for Maine were Capt. E. Weatherbee, M. E. Hodgdon, E. Ring, R. E. Hersey, A. Bean, H. M. Wessenger, E. Kritter, M. D. Chase, M. Morell, and T. J.
