BASIC BOOK KIT WHAT IS THE BASIC BOOK KIT? Throughout your physiotherapy studies you will be encouraged to read widely. Having your own collection of core books will be very useful over the three years in university, when you go on practice placements, and, of course when you qualify as a physiotherapist. The basic book kit is a guide suggested by previous students and staff who have found these resources useful and which they feel will be useful to your learning. During the first term of your first year studies, you will be expected to purchase the basic book kit (see below). This consists of a number of core books which are essential throughout the year. These books will provide you with a fundamental understanding of a subject, you will then move on to a more specific books and journal articles for a more in depth understanding. DO I NEED TO BUY ALL THESE BOOKS? NO. The library has a limited number of four week and two-week loans, reference only and overnight loan copies of all of these core books in the basic book kit. However, because you will find that you need to refer to these books frequently, it may be more convenient to have your own copy. Please note that we cannot guarantee you a library copy. You do not need to buy all of the recommended books at the start of your studies. Take some time to look at the books in the library, talk to previous students and see which books appeal to you. DOES THE BASIC BOOK KIT COVER EVERYTHING THAT I WILL NEED TO COMPLETE MY STUDIES? No, it is not an exhaustive list of all the books that you will need to access in the first year. Throughout the course, on each unit, you will be given a list of recommended reading. You may also wish to buy some of these books or access copies from the library, if available. DO I NEED TO BUY THESE BOOKS BEFORE I START MY STUDIES AT MMU? No, it is not expected that you purchase any books from the basic book kit prior to starting the course. There will be an opportunity to speak with the second years and visit the book fair so you can make an informed decision. Don’t forget to bring relevant books that you have used in your ‘A’ levels / recent studies – they may be useful. HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO BUY OR ACCESS BOOKS IN THE BASIC BOOK KIT? During the first 2 weeks of term, there will be a book sale on, at Birley Fields Campus (see timetable for details). This gives you an opportunity to look at the core textbooks that we recommend for your studies and purchase some of them. The book company (Fitedia) are able to supply all the texts on the booklist during the book fair and can offer a 20% discount on most books which you can benefit from at the fair or on line by applying the following code “physiostudent20” at the checkout. You can purchase directly from the Fitedia website at: http://fitedia.com/collections/manchester-metropolitan-university-physiotherapyreading-list Consider checking other online book sites that may provide competitive prices and free delivery. Below you will find a list of the key texts that we recommend you use during the first year. Whilst these texts will be heavily used during the first year, they are also key texts that will be required during the rest of your physiotherapy studies and on practice placement. WHY IS THERE A CHOICE OF TWO OR MORE BOOKS FOR SOME TOPIC AREAS? You will see that for some topic areas (e.g. anatomy), we ask you to purchase one book from a choice of two or more. This is because, for this topic area, no one particular book is preferred over another. It is up to you to take the time to use the different books and see which you prefer. WHICH ANATOMY BOOK SHOULD I BUY? You will be expected to buy an anatomy book early in the first term. This will be crucial to all of your studies and practice placements. As you can imagine, there are many different anatomy books on the market and it is impossible to recommend just one. Plus, all students learn and study differently and have preferences to the style of the book that works for them. For example some students who are more visual learners prefer lots of pictures and diagrams as opposed to lots of text. Others prefer more description. HOW DO I CHOOSE WHICH BOOKS TO BUY FROM THE LIST BELOW? 1 Take a look at the list of recommended anatomy texts, look them up in the library catalogue, go and find them and take some time to flick through them and see which one appeals to you. 2 Ask second or third year students either in person or through your first year facebook site. Don’t forget, they were once a new first year student wondering which books to buy. 3 Discuss this with your lecturers or with your personal tutor if you are still unsure. Lecturing staff will be able to introduce you to some of the anatomy books available. Use the library textbooks and anatomy TV until you are sure about which anatomy book works for you. If you are still unsure, use some books from the library and identify which book is most useful to you. Please note prices may vary. The following prices are an approximate cost. They use these books as a quick reference guide to assist their clinical reasoning. However, whilst these have been found useful by students as an aide memoir, they do not replace other more detailed textbooks from which you are expected to study and generate your study notes from, in order to gain a deeper level of understanding. 1 Palastanga, N., Soames, R. and Palastanga, D.
