Beach Destinations in Close Proximity for WaterWays Residents

Beach Destinations in Close Proximity for WaterWays Residents
When the nearby Ogeechee River just isn’t satisfying the desire for fun in the water and
sun, WaterWays residents can enjoy their close proximity to several prime beaching spots.
Tybee Island is just under an hour commute. Lovingly called “Savannah’s Beach,” Tybee offers the
essentials any beachgoer is after: fresh salt air, docile waves and miles of beach just minutes away
from historic downtown. It is first and foremost a getaway as there are opportunities to be lazy
or active. A variety of rentals are available ranging from bikes to paddle boards to kayaks! Birding
trails that host over 211 bird species, and the fishing from nearby Tybee Island Marina encourages
any nature lover to indulge. Additionally, a wide range of food options occupy the area with one
consistency; oysters. Some of the best oysters can be found at Bubba Gumbos’ and Tybee Island
Fish Camp.
St. Simons Island, or locally referred to as “The Island” is an hour from WaterWays and has access to
two public beaches. These two all-natural beaches, Massingale Park Beach, and Coast Guard Station
Beach are some of the most pristine in the southeast. Both beaches have bathhouses and lifeguards.
Travel + Leisure named the island one of the US’s best towns and Best Islands. Beaching is a way of
life in this happy, laid back town. Beyond relaxing, St. Simons is a gold mine for history buffs. Various
archeological and historic sites include St. Simons Lighthouse, Bloody Marsh Battle Site, The Avenue
of Oaks and Fort Frederica.
Jekyll Island is a lowcountry paradise just an hour and fifteen minutes from WaterWays. This
well-preserved island is draped in Spanish moss and proudly self-defines as a tranquil retreat for
anyone. Sea Turtles love Jekyll Island too! Beach-goers can participate in turtle walks through the
nearby Georgia Sea Turtle Center and alligator and dolphin sightings are not rare, either. Don’t forget
to bring your clubs! Jekyll has been a golf destination since its first course in 1898. Home to four
award-winning golf courses, Jekyll Island is Georgia’s largest public golf resort. Playing here is an
unforgettable experience.
Hilton Head is the epitome of lowcountry life. Covering an area of only 12 by 5 miles, this small
but immensely popular destination is packed with tons to see and do without the hassle of a long
commute. Bike rental business is booming here, because biking is THE way to travel in this relaxed
resort town. Buildings in this area have a cohesive low-key look, which gives the beautiful scenery
the attention it deserves. Not only is Hilton Head gorgeous, but it is a well-rounded community that
truly does have something for everyone. Family favorites include mini golf, horseback riding, and ziplining. Most resorts offer day camps for kids, giving you ample free time to relax and unwind.
Ossabaw Island has been flawlessly preserved, due in part to its remoteness. This island is for the
adventurous at heart as it is only accessible by boat. This unspoiled beach is a true escape from the
bustle of daily life, and once venturing from the mainland, island-goers can enjoy Mother Nature.
Loggerhead sea turtles, wood storks and other birds nest here as well. Those wanting to further their
historic or natural education can book a program through the Ossabaw Island Foundation.
Where the pace of life is set to the rhythm of the tides.
