Happy New Year!
Healthy Resolutions for
the New Year
Resolving to live better is a New
Year’s tradition. Here are some
resolutions to put seniors on the
road to better health:
Drink more water. To ensure the
body is functioning at its best,
consume plenty of liquids—water,
juice, milk and soup. Thirst
diminishes with age, so be sure to
drink several glasses of water
a day.
Catch your z’s. Don’t
underestimate the power of a
good night’s sleep. Most seniors
need about eight hours a night.
Resolve to go to bed and wake up
at reasonable times to allow for
sufficient shut-eye.
Get adequate nutrition. Aim to
eat three balanced meals a day
containing nutrient-dense foods
such as fruits, vegetables, whole
grains, lean meats and low-fat
dairy products. If your appetite is
decreasing, consider
supplementing your diet with
liquid nutritional drinks for
seniors.
Move your body. Talk with your
health-care provider about
activities appropriate for your
level of fitness and mobility. Light
workouts, such as walking,
stretching and lifting small
weights, can provide big benefits.
Keep in contact with friends and
family. Social connections boost
emotional well-being, which is
every bit as important as physical
health. Reach out to your friends
and work together on achieving
your goal of a healthy, happy
new year.
2013! Let the good times continue.

Employee of the Month
Isabel Parsons
Congratulations!
Growing up on a farm in the Philippines,
Isabel recalls playing with piglets, giving
vegetables to their neighbors and, at the age of
five, drinking yolks from the eggs she collected
(which her mother quickly put a stop to). She
gained many jobs skills in her adult life, then
trained to be the caregiver for her mother. “I can
relate to family members who don’t feel they
can care for their loved ones. Maybe this is my
calling, I met my husband when I took care of
his father.” Thank you, Isabel, for following
your calling and doing it so well!
From the Director of
Resident Care,
Christa Giraldo
January is a month of much
recognition, celebrations and
remembrances. It can also be a
celebration of a new beginning, a
fresh start, a clean slate. We often
make a New Year’s resolution in
hopes of getting healthier in the
New Year. We start eating
healthier, exercising and
sometimes we start to notice signs
and symptoms of something that
is “just not right”. January also is
National Eye Care and Glaucoma
Awareness month.
Our eyesight is very important
to us, greater than 2.2 million
Americans age 40 and older have
glaucoma. There are no early
symptoms, sometimes people
have no symptoms at all, which
leads to over half of those affected
with glaucoma not even knowing
they have the disease. It is often
called a “sneak thief of sight.”
Glaucoma is an eye condition that
affects the optic nerve. The cause
is unknown; there is an increase in
eye pressure that pushes on the
optic nerve, causing damage to the
optic nerve. Once vision loss
occurs, the damage is already
severe, with signs and
symptoms like loss of side
(peripheral) vision or tunnel
vision. Advanced glaucoma can
lead to blindness.
There are four major types of
Glaucoma:
• Open-angle Glaucoma, is the
most common, generally
runs in families, but there are
often no early symptoms.
• Angle-closure Glaucoma, you
may experience severe pain
in one eye, cloudy vision, red
eye, or your eye feels swollen.
• Congenital Glaucoma,
generally occurs when a child
is a few months old,
cloudiness in front of the eye
is noted, and enlargement of
one or both eyes.
• Secondary Glaucoma, is
caused by drugs such as
corticosteroids, systemic
diseases or trauma.
Early detection is imperative to
retaining healthy eye(s). A
complete eye exam will to
diagnosis glaucoma. Your
Ophthalmologist or Optometrist
can help detect this disease by
running a battery of eye tests,
including dilating your eyes and
using a special lens to look into
your eye. Treatment depends on
the type of Glaucoma you have,
but most often includes eye drops,
laser therapy and/or oral
medication to reduce pressure.
Please let your nurse at
Belmont Village Wellness Center
know if you are experiencing any
signs of Glaucoma or other eye
conditions, so we can assist you
with setting up an appointment
with your specialist. Start the New
Year off right and take care of you!

From the Memory
Program Coordinator,
Fernanda Maor
Belmont’s caring and loving
staff have done a great job in
maintaining the integrity of the
Circle of Friends program and our
high standards in service
throughout 2012. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank
them for their efforts. I also thank
all the residents, families and
friends who were very generous in
donating to our employee fund
last year. This fund accumulates
and is disbursed in year end
bonuses for our hourly staff.
Residents feel how much the staff
cares about their well being and
often want to give gifts of thanks.
Our staff does not accept tips or
gifts, so this fund is a wonderful
way to express gratitude for that
extra effort displayed. That effort
in bringing stimulating activities,
exciting outings and social
experiences is what makes
Belmont Village a great place for
our residents to live.
