Horoscopes and Birthdays
If you were born between March
1–20, you are a Pisces, the Fish.
Pisces are imaginative,
compassionate, and selfless.
Many Pisces become artists due
to their remarkable creativity and
love of beauty. Those born
between March 21–31 are Aries,
the Ram. Aries are active,
energetic, and courageous.
When they see what they want,
they go for it.

Funny, though, that when frogs
stand up, their noses point
straight ahead while their eyes
point backward to where they
have come from. Both frogs see
their own homes and declare,
“Kyoto is exactly like Osaka!” and
vice versa. They return home
none the wiser and live happily
ever after, reminding us that while

hill, we should be thankful for what

While traditional tales like these
serve to teach children important
life lessons, these stories are also
helpful reminders to adults.
Folktales and Fables Week is a
perfect opportunity to revisit some
favorite childhood stories and
reread them from an adult
perspective. There seems to be an
almost endless amount of lessons to
be learned from these classic fables.

We Are the World
Imagine a musical supergroup starring Michael Jackson, Stevie
Wonder, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Bruce
Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bette
Midler, the Pointer Sisters, Smokey Robinson, and others. On March 7,
1985, these musical powerhouses joined together to release the song
“We Are the World” to benefit the famine in Ethiopia. The song
generated over 50 million dollars in humanitarian aid for Africa and
another 20 million to fight hunger in the U.S. and became a worldwide
success. Surprisingly, “We Are the World” was not received well within
the music community. Some thought it was not political enough. Some
thought the singing was poor quality or the musicians were self-indulgent.
But, no one can deny that the song helped make the world a better
place.

Once Upon a Time…
March 18–24 is World Folktales
and Fables Week. Every culture
around the world has a storytelling
tradition. Tales, fables, myths, and
legends are not just entertaining,
but these stories impart important
life lessons that we pass on from
generation to generation.
The classic German fairy tale of
Hansel and Gretel tells of how the
two children, lost in the woods and
hungry, come upon a cottage made
of bread, cakes, and sugar. They
nibble on the house, and its owner,
an old woman, kindly invites them
in. The woman, though, is really a
nasty witch who threatens to eat
them. Gretel, using her wits, tricks
the witch into climbing into her
oven, where she is cooked. A grim
story (brought to us by the Brothers
Grimm) but a simple lesson to
children not to trust strangers.
The Japanese share the tale of two
frogs, one from the seaside village
of Osaka and the other from the
great city of Kyoto. Each frog
wishes to visit the other frog’s home,
and while on their journeys, they
meet on a mountaintop. They help

Tool Time
March 11 is a day to bow down to
the almighty hammer. It’s Worship
of Tools Day. This is the perfect day
to get that special someone in your
life a new tool. Perhaps they need
a solar-powered bird sweeper to
keep pigeons off the roof. A
Halligan bar is the tool of choice for
firefighters when it comes to breaking
down doors. A pair of rolling, gelpadded Knee Blades will allow
anyone working on their knees to
move with comfort and speed.
Tools truly separate humans from
the rest of the animal kingdom—or
maybe not. Otters use rocks to
crack open seashells.
Chimpanzees hunt with spears.
Dolphins trap fish with shells.
Perhaps this is the day to ask our
animal friends to fix that leaky pipe.
