Week 2 Term 3

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to Annabelle Woodbury in Year 10. She competed in the NSW All Schools Cross Country
Competition last week, achieving 12th place in the 16 years 4km race. A great achievement!
Archdale debating continues this term. We had some impressive wins yesterday against St Vincent’s.
Well done to our two Year 7 teams, our Year 8 teams, and Year 10. The topic area was Law and Order.
It’s wonderful to see our girls engaging so enthusiastically with the great social and political issues of
our time.
The HSC Trials commence on Monday. Our Drama students get a head start with their Trial performances this Thursday night. Please keep them all in mind and support them with your prayer.
Don’t forget the KPF on Friday next week. This time, each year group will get together to hear from
some excellent speakers on age-specific topics, including coping with the changes of adolescence; living
faith in the family; discipline and authority in the teen years; socialising; human love; post school challenges … and more. You’ll find full details elsewhere in this Rust and Navy.
The KPF will be a great opportunity to touch base with your tutor and your child’s teachers. A strong
partnership between school and home is a hallmark of Tangara. The termly parent/tutor meeting is always essential. Don’t forget that the teachers are also happy to speak personally with you about any
aspect of your child’s academic progress. Drop them an email, leave a message at the front office, or
arrange a time to catch up face to face. Good communication is essential. I also welcome your feedback
about anything, any time!

Woolworths Earn & Learn is
back and it is now easier than
ever to earn valuable resources
for your primary school, secondary school or Early Learning
Centre. Last year more than
14,500 schools and Early
Learning Centres benefited
from the program, boost ing
supplies in classrooms, libraries, music rooms, gymnasiums and science labs.
It’s simple to participate. From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September
2015, when your staff and parents shop at Woolworths they can collect Woolworths
Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator or through an online order and
place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths
Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards).
Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at your
school or at your local Woolworths.
You can then redeem your Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers for valuable education
resources for your school or Early Learning Centre.

It's hard to believe the rate that social media has grown in the past few years. Here are
some staggering statistics:
• 10 years ago there was no Facebook!
• If Facebook were a country, it would be the largest in the world more populous than China
• The “like” button is clicked 3,125,000 times every minute on Facebook.
• 60% of 50 to 60 year olds are active on social media
• Students who used social networking sites while studying scored 20% lower on tests
Many benefits have resulted from the increase in social media.
It has become a great communication tool to keep in touch with distant relatives . Social
media has also made the world a much smaller place with our ability to connect to the rest
of the world and keep up to date with hot global topics. Finally, it has become a great resource. With plenty of articles and websites at the click of a finger, we are now able to research and investigate many topics.
With these benefits also come a few disadvantages. The number one issue is that social
media can be an addiction. It is easy to fall into the trap of procrastination. There is also
the limit of face-to-face interaction, leading to poor social skills. Finally, with a whole new
world behind a screen, cyber bullying has become an alarming issue, which has negatively
impacted many lives.
Here are a few tips to enjoy the benefits that social media bestows while avoiding the negatives.
• Limit usage of social media sites to only a few minutes each day. During the school term,
it is a really good idea to start a competition with your friends to see who can go without
their social media apps the longest.
• Assume everything you upload is permanent. Employers now research your social media
history before employing any staff. This means that whatever you post may affect you in
the future so it's important that you are smart with what you post.

Substitute some time on the phone with a good book.

Infants News
Term 3 has started with a bang at Infants. With a
puff of smoke and a flash of lightening, students
were exposed to the fun and excitement of
Science in a spectacular interactive stage show.
Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue, or
how cartoons work or even how you can sit on a
seat of nails? Using simple materials, Tom from
Fizzics Education engaged and taught students
how to answer these things and more. A
favourite for some, was flying toilet paper, a
demonstration on how the Coanda effect helps
planes to fly. Another highlight for students was
giant smoke rings flying through the air to
explain air pressure.
The Incursion was a start of a term-long spotlight
on Science at Infants, culminating in the 2-day
event Science Funfair on the 15 and 16
September. Look out for the regular updates .
A BIG term for us at Infants with Grandparents’

Whooping Cough 22 July Term 3
A person who attends Tangara School for Girls in Cherrybrook has been diagnosed
with Whooping cough (Pertussis).
What are the symptoms?
Whooping cough usually starts with a runny nose, followed by persistent cough
that comes in bouts. Bouts may be followed by vomiting and a whooping sound as
the child gasps for air. Whooping cough can cause a severe illness in young children particularly those aged under 6 months.
How is it spread?
Whooping cough is usually spread by direct contact with the droplets from the
nose and throat of an infected person produced whilst coughing. People at greatest risk of getting the illness are those who have had a considerable amount of
face-to-face contact with a person with the disease. Whooping cough can occur in
people previously vaccinated.
What should parents do?
Anyone developing symptoms should consult their local doctor and mention that
there has been a case of whooping cough in the school. Children who are diagnosed with whooping cough need to stay away from school until they have taken 5
days of a special antibiotic.
For further information please refer to the NSW Health factsheet on whooping
cough (available from http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/
Pertussis.aspx) or contact the Northern Sydney Public Health Unit on 9477 9187.”

A Week in the life of a Year Two Navy Girl
Our day may start with a visit to our Chapel to sing, ‘Good Morning to Jesus’, and say a prayer
to Our Lady- this is always a great way to start the day.
As we arrived back to school from a three week holiday, we planned, drafted and published a
personal recount of something special that happened during the holidays. We used the Visible
Thinking Routine, ‘Headlines’, to attract and entertain our audience.
Monday is a special day as we have our Religion lesson- our first Monday back we spoke about
the many special gifts which God has given to each of us. We decided God is extremely kind,
He even gave us our five senses, which, when tasting Fairy Floss, is truly a gift. And if our
five senses weren’t great enough, He gave us our free will. Free will, our freedom of choice,
just like the Angels in Heaven. Thank you God.
During the week we read a story from Junior Great Books, ‘The Red Balloon’. We discussed
interpretive questions in small groups.
Our art focus this term is the art technique, Paper Mache. This week we viewed a selection
of paper mache art and completed a Visible Thinking Routine, ‘See Think Wonder’. Our first
lesson was a trial run, which included mixing flour and water to make glue.
Our Integrated Unit this term is, ‘Look! Listen!’ We walked around our school community analysing the sounds and sights we heard and saw.
A special part of our day is Literacy Groups where we are able to work independently on different tasks. Literacy Group activities include; listening post, grammar activities, literacy
activities with Mrs Breen and Reading/Comprehension activities with Mrs McAuliffe. We
rotate activities each day.
To say the least, by the end of the week we are
exhausted!

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2015
Our annual Tangara Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday June 11, at Greenway Park. Congratulations to all students for their fantastic participation and House spirit which was displayed throughout the
day. We had some spectacular races, with the School Sprinting Champion event (fastest 8 girls in the
school) being one of the many highlights. Congratulations to Catherine Panayi in Year 10 for taking the
honours of first place in this event.
Many thanks to the Tangara PE staff (Miss Yacoub, Mrs Edwards, Mrs Troup and Miss Walsh) for assisting with the set up and pack down. All of the Tangara staff for helping as officials on the day. They certainly do a fantastic job and make the day run smoothly. Also, thank you to Mrs Julia Symons and her
helpers for organising and running the canteen on the day. The students thoroughly enjoy having a canteen on days like this. Thank you also to the Maintenance team for transporting all of our goods to and
from the oval and assisting with our set up and pack down. Thank you to the parents for your attendance
and support on the day. Overall, it was an enjoyable and successful day!
The Age Champions will be listed in the Rust and Navy in a fortnight—so stay tuned!
The Representative teams for both the IPSHA and IGSSA Athletics Carnivals have now be announced
and the successful girls have been notified.

FAQ #17
Official Rule 15: A goal; is scored when the ball is thrown or batted over and completely through the
ring by Goal Shooter or Goal Attack within the goal circle including the lines bounding the goal circle.

The game begins and ends on the umpire’s whistle which is blown as soon as the signal is heard.

It is important to note that if the ball in NOT COMPLETLEY THROUGH THE RING when the umpires
whistle is blown for time, the GOAL DOES NOT COUNT. In the air does not count.

If a penalty has been awarded to the attacking team in the goal circle prior to ending the game then
that PENALTY SHOT MUST BE TAKEN. Once the shot is taken, there is no further whistle to be blown
and the game ends.
