said, "we have to go with the idea
he is not going to be here. We will
have to see the length of time the
commissioners want him to stay
out. It's something we have to live
with."
Rogers said there are many good
arms in camp, although some of
these have not been or barely been
tested in the major leagues. The
starting corps will probably consist
of Dennis Martinez, Bryn Smith
and Kevin Gross* who was acquired from the Philadelphia
Phillies for p i t c h e r s Floyd'

team appears to be well set for
relievers, with Tim Burke, Joe

the off-season and gave it more
flexibility when they acquired
Spike Owen from the Boston Red
Sox. To get him, they gave up John
Dopson, a pitcher, and infielder
Louis Rivers. Owen is regarded as
one of the top 'glovemen' in the
league.'
Montreal also acquired outfielder Mike Aldrete from the San
Francisco Giants. To get Aldrete,
who has had considerable success
as a pinch hitter, the club gave up
Tracy Jones, who had been obtain-

of the season, but said he is now fully recovered. He appeared in camp

WATERTOWN — The Watertown Indians will make their 1989 home
debut June 17 when they host the Auburn Astros in a 7 p.m. start. The
Tribe will open the season a t Auburn on June 16. The 1989 season will
mark the first for Watertown as an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
Watertown had been a Pittsburgh Pirates farm club from 1983-88. The
Pirates now operate out of Welland, Ontario.
"We're very excited about the upcoming season," said Watertown
General Manager, Tom Van Schaack. "With our new affiliation with
Cleveland, we feel very fortunate to be a part of one of the up and coming franchises in the major leagues.''
The NY-PENN league has added three cities to the 14 team legue;
Niagara Falls, Pittsfield (MA) and Welland (ONT). "Having three new
cities in the league will give the Watertown fans the opportunity to see
that many more potential future major league players," claimed Van
Schssck
