Perez's Relapse Complicates Expos' High Hopes BY SIDNEY MAGILL special CorresDondenfWEST PALM B E A C H T F L A Manager Buck Rogers said last week he<expected tht1989 edition of frn e p M 0 ^ l r l a l ? X P° S w o u W b e the finest of the decade. The words were barely uttered, when notification was received that pitcher S h - r * £ e r e z h a d entered a rehabilitation center and is lost to the earn indefinately. p 8 r e z w a s 12-8 last year with a sparkling 2.48 earned run average, one of the lowest in the Nationll League ' A t £ I t h i s Point," the manager said, "we have to go with the idea he is not going to be here. We will have to see the length of time the commissioners want him to stay out. It's something we have to live with." Rogers said there are many good arms in camp, although some of these have not been or barely been tested in the major leagues. The starting corps will probably consist of Dennis Martinez, Bryn Smith and Kevin Gross* who was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for p i t c h e r s Floyd' Youmans and Jeff Parrett. The team appears to be well set for relievers, with Tim Burke, Joe Hesketh and Andy McGaffigan, The leading candidates to sue- Grapefruit League Grapevine ceed Perez are 6-foot-10 Bandy Johnson, and Brian Holman. Johnson was 3-0 with the Expos last September after spending most of the season at Class AAA Indianapolis. Holman was 4-8 a t Montreal with a 3.23 ERA after being summoned from Indianapolis. Veteran NealHeatpn, a lefty, had a disappointing 3-10 season last year with a 4.99 ERA. The previous' year h e compiled a 13-10 season with a 4.52 ERA. The Expos strengthened their infield during ed from the Cincinnati Reds. the off-season and gave it more flexibility when they acquired Spike Owen from the Boston Red Sox. To get him, they gave up John Dopson, a pitcher, and infielder Louis Rivers. Owen is regarded as one of the top 'glovemen' in the league.' Montreal also acquired outfielder Mike Aldrete from the San Francisco Giants. To get Aldrete, who has had considerable success as a pinch hitter, the club gave up Tracy Jones, who had been obtain- area. Willach batted ,257 last year with i2 hotoe runs and 69 runs batted in. The year previous he had i23rbis. He i s regarded as one of the premier fielding third bseman in the NationatLeague, A group of talented players from Indianapolis a r e 'training here, both pitchers and position players. The Indians captured the American Association championship last'season. Class AA Jacksonville was third in the Southern League. Rogers said the Expo fortunes in 1989 will depend to a large extent on Tim Raines arid Tim Wallach. Raines was injured much of the season, but said he is now fully recovered. He appeared in camp early, when the pitchers, and catchers started workouts. His winter home is in the "West Palm Beach Mike Fitzgerald and Nelson Santovehia, -who came along fast after being recalled from .the. Indians, will split the receivingchores.
