THE MIRABEL POST F E B R U A R Y 2 017 FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK MARCIE MILLS, CCM - GENERAL MANAGER / COO “The moment you stop accepting challenges is the moment you stop moving forward.” - Unknown Dear Mirabel Members, January has been a whirlwind of a month. As I reflect on what the food and beverage team has accomplished over the past several weeks, I must share with you that I am very proud of their efforts. The survey was closed on January 3 and in a few weeks’ time the team has delivered positive action and have worked very hard to achieve necessary results. Although we recognize that there is still much work to be done to continue to improve and enhance your dining experience, I would be remiss if I did not commend Chef Brandon and Matt for their combined efforts on menu changes, new concepts and service training. I also need to recognize Tori for implementing the changes in the Dining Room and assisting with training; Ashley for her efforts in creative menu design; and Shannon for her recommendations of bringing back member favorite events from years past and her efforts in convincing Chef Anne-Marie to entertain coming back to Mirabel. I think we all agree that our new pastries, desserts and baked goods have been outstanding since Chef Anne-Marie’s return. So, what’s next you may ask? Keep an eye out for a new Special Edition Food and Beverage Post, that will help tell the story of where our foods are sourced and our dedication to serving premium and quality products in food and beverage. Chef, Matt and I encourage you to continue to communicate your thoughts and comments regarding the changes that we have made in food and beverage. We are very excited to continue our path forward and make all necessary improvements to keep you dining often here at Mirabel! The 10th tee BBQ station is still in the permitting process. We are awaiting approval from the city of Scottsdale. Once the approval is received, the Maricopa County Department of Environmental Services will come to inspect the proposed site before we begin construction. Due to the unanticipated time lapse during the permitting process, our desired time line for construction has been delayed. I have spoken to the builder, the House Committee and the Board. We are all in agreement that it is best to delay the construction project until the summer months. The main reason being is that the building process will take 8 weeks and we are now approaching peak season. To have the disruption, dust, noise, debris, construction vehicles and waste sites on course while you are entertaining guests is not ideal. I am disappointed to delay the project, but I am confident that it is the right course of action to take at this time. We will continue to update you on our building progress. I am happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this and we thank you for your patience. On February 7, I depart for the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) World Conference for several days. This is the 9th annual world conference that I have attended for the association. It is an action-packed week consisting of education and mentoring sessions and networking. I have served on the National Ad Hoc Committee for education for CMAA for three years, and it is always exciting to be a part of the education process. I value learning, and look forward to returning to the Club with several ideas to improve and enhance our operations. I will be sure to write more in next month’s article about what I have learned and can bring back to Mirabel. I greatly appreciate the wonderful opportunity to participate in CMAA and all of the education programs offered. On a final note, I would like to thank all of you who attended our “Meet the Leadership Team” Town Hall meeting. It was a smashing success and I watched with pride as each member of our team shared professional and personal perspectives. We had a lot of fun participating in the event and I received many comments from members who really enjoyed the afternoon. Our entire team thanks you for your support and enthusiasm as we continue to build upon our foundation, team, and experience. As always, my office door is always open; please stop by to let us know how we are progressing. This is your Club, and we are all dedicated to making it the best experience possible. I hope to see you around the Club, on the golf course, and in the Dining Room! AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE MATT PROCH - FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR It is hard to believe that January has come and gone. We have had an exciting month here in the Food and Beverage Department at Mirabel with the Spanish Wine Dinner, The Car Club Lunch and The Coyote Combo Golf Tournament that concluded the month with the Awards Dinner Sunday January 29th. Most notably we received and intensely reviewed the feedback from the Food and Beverage survey that was sent out in midDecember. Based on that feedback, we have implemented several new changes that we hope you have been enjoying for the past couple of weeks. Here are a few of the highlights of our new vision moving forward: • Breakfast Menu: New Items and Presentation on Breakfast Menu . • Signature Menu: We noticed that the Bar Menu was under-used and repetitive with items already offered on the lunch menu so we fused the Bar and Lunch Menus into our new Signature Mirabel menu offering an array of options. • Dinner Menu: We have introduced new dishes to the menu that have more of a wholesome comfort style while maintaining the integrity of our produce. Of the 16 entrees featured, 9 are under $20. • Thursday Happy Hour & Theme Dinner Night: Every Thursday for the remainder of the season we will be open until 8pm and we will feature our Happy Hour pricing and Signature Menu Items from 4:00pm-6:00pm and additionally offer a Themed Dinner Buffet. Last Thursday we had the first ever “Build Your Own Mac ‘N’ Cheese Bar which was a huge success! This coming Thursday we will have a “Build Your Own Burger Night”. Please keep your eye out for future emails that will explain what other themes will be offered throughout the season. • Sunday Supper: Back by popular demand every Sunday will now be Spaghetti Sundays. A rotation of new antipasto’s and desserts will keep you coming back for more. As you can see Chef Brandon and I are dedicated in delivering the finest service and exceptional dining experiences to you and your guests. As a reminder we are here to make your dining experience enjoyable so if there is something that you are craving or have specific dietary restrictions do not hesitate to ask myself or any one of our knowledgeable staff. For the Month of February we have some exciting events taking place at Mirabel: Thursday 2/2/17 – Build your Own Burger Night Sunday 2/4/17 – Super Bowl Viewing Party (we are sold out) Tuesday 2/7/17 – Speakers Forum featuring Nat Robinson Saturday 2/11/17 – Monday 2/13/17 – Prickly Pair Golf Tournament Tuesday 2/14/17 – Valentine’s Day Dinner Tuesday 2/21/17 – Physician’s Panel for the Hope For The Cause Thursday 2/23/17 – Thirsty Thursday “Hole In One” Celebration Sunday 2/26/17 – Bark Brunch We still have some amazing deals on Wine and Liquor that you are able to purchase and get through the Club. IN THE GYM JENNY HILL- FITNESS MANAGER & PERSONAL TRAINER HEART HEALTH Your heart is the center of your cardiovascular system, and it is vitally responsible for just about everything that gives your body life, ranging from the transportation of oxygen to the success of your immune system. However, the foods you eat and the amount of activity you choose to take part in can dramatically affect the overall health of your heart and the many other tissues that make up your cardiovascular system. BLOOD PRESSURE Your blood pressure is one area of heart health that needs to be regularly checked and regulated. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can be affected by your overall weight, especially once you reach a body mass index score of 30 or higher. This score is classified as obese. Excess fat increases the work your heart has to perform to pump blood throughout your body. The harder your heart works, the more pressure is placed on the walls of your arteries, which can increase your risk for blood vessel damage. Lowering your body weight by even as little as 5 to 10 percent can lower your blood pressure and increase your heart health. CHOLESTEROL LEVELS Controlling your cholesterol also plays an important role in heart health; it decreases your risks for heart disease, heart attack and stroke. The two main kinds of cholesterol are low-density lipoprotein -- LDL or the “bad” cholesterol -- and high-density lipoprotein -- HDL or the “good” cholesterol. The LDL cholesterol is found in foods high in saturated fat, especially animal proteins. When consumed in high levels, LDL cholesterol can build up in the bloodstream and calcify into hard plaque. This plaque makes it difficult for blood to circulate through the affected arteries, increasing your risk for cardiovascular damage. CIRCULATION Taking care of your heart also affects your circulation. Good circulation is needed to transport oxygen and nutrients to the many different cells in your body. Without proper circulation, tissues begin to die, which can result in amputations or even death, depending on what tissues are not getting enough oxygen. High blood pressure, cholesterol plaque and other heart diseases can all affect your body’s ability to transport blood efficiently throughout your body. WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY To keep your heart healthy, your body needs adequate amounts of exercise accompanied by a heart-healthy diet. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week. A heart-healthy diet consists of the majority of your calories coming from vegetables, fruits and high-fiber foods like legumes and whole grains. These foods are accompanied in moderation by lean proteins, especially fish, as well as low-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds. The cooler temps have finally arrived which means the pool cover will be placed over the pool to conserve energy. The cover will be left on for as long as possible. If any Member would like to use the pool please contact the gym attendant and they will be happy to remove the cover for you. BOOK CLUB NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15 @4:30PM Euphoria by Lily King. Facilitated by Ilynn Sutton. Amazon Review: From New England Book Award winner Lily King comes a breathtaking novel about three young anthropologists of the ‘30s caught in a passionate love triangle that threatens their bonds, their careers, and ultimately, their lives. English anthropologist Andrew Bankson has been alone in the field for several years, studying the Kiona river tribe in the territory of New Guinea. Haunted by the memory of his brothers’ deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink. Nell and Fen have just fled the bloodthirsty Mumbanyo and, in spite of Nell’s poor health, are hungry for a new discovery. When Bankson finds them a new tribe nearby - the artistic, female-dominated Tam - he ignites an intellectual and romantic firestorm between the three of them that burns out of anyone’s control. Set between two World Wars and inspired by events in the life of revolutionary anthropologist Margaret Mead, Euphoria is an enthralling story of passion, possession, exploration, and sacrifice from accomplished author Lily King. THE GREENS REPORT JEFF GOREN, CGCS - DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSE OPERATIONS El Niño appears to have arrived, a year late, but it definitely feels like it has arrived. January so far has been a very cool and damp month. We have experienced minimal frost delays but numerous storms have passed through bringing a total of 2.68” of rain. Rain is always welcomed by a superintendent, unless it happens in and or around a maintenance day. Unfortunately this has been occurring. Leaving us a little behind the eight ball on a few applications. Most notably, our initial glyphosate application for Poa annua control. Hopefully we do not experience any more rain events on our maintenance days so we can catch up on our agronomic practices. The course has been in outstanding conditions although it has been playing a little long due to the wet conditions. We will continue lowering the heights of cut on our fairways and if we can go longer than 5 days without rain maybe then we all can get a little more roll on our drives. We have recently sodded the upper driving range tee near the chipping green. Once this has fully rooted we will reopen the tee. This process was delayed about 10 days as the sod provider was unable to access their fields due to the rain events. Our intention is in February to sod a portion of the main driving range tee as well. Therefore, the teeing surface will be in ideal conditions for the Pima Rose and Staghorn. Overall recovery has been a little slow on the driving range tee this season. We hope with additional attention from my staff, additional fertilizer, and some warm sunny days we should have better success with recovery. In February, we historically start seeing an increase in soil temperatures which will provide additional growth and recovery throughout the golf course. This will allow us to conduct a v-cut and topdressing on our greens in late February. Our greens have not seen any such cultural practices since our aeration during the overseeding closure. These cultural practices are critical to maintaining desirable growing conditions and it also improves the putting surface and the trueness of the roll for everyone’s benefit. Speaking of cold and windy, the first day of the Men’s Coyote Combo had a very tight scoring spread in both the Mirabel and the Silver tee division. The Mirabel tee division had a difference from first place to last place of only 8 strokes. Everyone was in it with the final round essentially counting double as it was aggregate scoring. However, due to wind and cold, the final round of the men’s Coyote Combo had two different format changes. To help keep the integrity of the event but more importantly get off the golf course in a reasonable amount of time due to wind and cold, we ended up playing a Shamble format scoring the 1 Best Ball of 2. At the end of 36 holes, we had a tie for the Mirabel Flight between Pat Rice / Chuck Gonzalves vs. Paul DeWitt / Vic Springer (2016 Mirabel Champions). Both teams had a combined 83 points. To break the tie, we held a closest to the pin competition from the Event Lawn to the 18th hole, which played 78 yards. Chuck Gonzalves hit a good shot in there to about 20 feet, good enough to propel the Rice / Gonzalves team to victory. Great job guys. In the Silver Tee flight, we also had a tie atop the leaderboard between Mark Krivoruchka / Jeffrey Horn vs Mike O’Donnell / Jerry Richardson (2016 Silver Champions). Both teams had a combined 86 points. In the shootout playoff, both Horn and Krivoruchka hit the green to put the pressure on the O’Donnell / Richardson team. After O’Donnell missed the green, Richardson calmly got up and stuffed it to about 8 feet to bring home the hardware.... 2 years in a row! Congratulations to the O’Donnell / Richardson team! The Ladies Coyote Combo weather was markedly better than what the gentlemen endured the prior two days. Sunshine, warmer weather and less wind made for good scoring conditions and overall great golf weather. It was a tight race after round one, with the team of Nancy Kurzweil / Denise Marlin as day one leaders, with Jean Baird / Jo Ann Redding on their tails one point behind. The final round of the Coyote Combo is combined aggregate format where both players scores count for the total score.... otherwise known as ‘Moving Day’. One team not only moved, but had a monumental leap to atop the leaderboard to take home victory. The team of Sherry Schwallie & Karen Miller surged to the top with a 10 point victory, one of the largest in Coyote Combo history. Both ladies played well, but Karen carded her lowest career round with a spectacular 87! “Everything just seemed to go in, or end up near the hole” is what Sherry said about Karen Miller’s play. Congratulations to the Miller / Schwallie team! TOM FAZIO As many of you know, the PGA Merchandise Show is held every January in Orlando. It’s a huge event and the Golf Channel actually covers it on television. I haven’t been as frequently since I’ve moved to Arizona, with this year being my second time attending in seven years. It is great to go there and reconnect with many of my colleagues, see the new product and learn best practices. However, the last two times now have included a bit of a bucket list experience. Three years ago included me having the opportunity to hang out with Arnold Palmer at Bay Hill and being a part of the season premiere of the David Feherty Show. This year, included me playing a round of golf at the famed Seminole Golf Club along side non other than our famed architect Tom Fazio. If you haven’t heard, here is how that happened: About three weeks ago, Tom Fazio’s office called here and was wondering if Mr. Fazio could bring out a couple of his friends and their wives for a round of golf. As it turned out, it was one of our good weather days and we had a couple of open tee times in the morning. I, along with Marcie, greeted Mr. Fazio at the the first hole and wished him a good day. As I was doing a ranger - run later in the day, I encountered Mr. Fazio on the 13th hole where he waved me over for a quick chat. Lucky for me, the quick chat turned into us riding the rest of the golf course in my cart, talking about what’s been happening at Mirabel and Phoenix. I can tell you first hand that Tom Fazio is very impressed with everything that he could see going on at the Club. The first thing he mentioned to me was how much he liked the transition of the rye grass to the blonde bermuda rough. The next question as we stood on 13 green was “Where is all of your Poa Annua?” I told him that we have the best superintendent in the world and he has a practice in place that obviously seems to be working. It was overtly clear he was very impressed with the condition of Mirabel. “David, the golf course is just in spectacular condition” is what Fazio said to me. We were able to talk course design and strategy on holes such as #11 and #15 at Mirabel, and even the cart path crossing the fairway on #17. At the end of the 18th hole, he asked me if I ever get to Florida and if so, would love host me for a round of golf at Seminole. I was able to take him up on his offer. Seminole is a fantastic club, and it’s clear to me that he holds Mirabel, and Discovery Land, in very high regard. I think we will see Mr. Fazio again. UPCOMING INVITATIONALS The Staghorn Invitational has had a dozen or so members withdraw from the tournament which has opened the door for that many off the Wait List. As we get a little further along, I would expect a few more to cancel. The Pima Rose has a growing number of ladies that have signed up. Due to Easter, the Pima Rose will be held a little earlier than normal. If you’re planning on playing in the Pima Rose, please sign up as soon as possible; I believe The Staghorn and Pima Rose will be truly fun and memorable events! A few years ago we introduced a Couples Member - Guest and named it ‘The Prickly Pair’ (notice the play on words with ‘Pair”. This year, we have a full field of 32 teams. This will be a really fun time, kicking off with a Sip & Chip Saturday afternoon and playing the Prickly Pair Sunday and Monday, February 12 - 13. Due to such a large turnout, is now a 2 Best Ball of 4 Shamble. Our hope is the change of format will keep the groups moving throughout the day. Special thanks to Paul and Sandy Skoog for chairing the Prickly Pair for assisting with what will be a really great Invitational. Finally, I’d like to turn your attention to The Sonoran, which will be played Friday - Sunday May May 19 - 21. I truly believe this event, in a year or two, will be one of the most popular we have all year long. The Sonoran will feature a fun, distinct and different format to be played each day. There is no formal practice round for the tournament. This tournament is open to any foursome make-up (all member team, couples team, etc), but my inclination is it will morph into more of a member-guest over time. The field is limited to 30 teams, so please sign up today! ON THE LESSON TEE JASON REDDINGTON - DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION, PGA Swing up on the Driver for Distance AND Consistency A couple of weeks ago Justin Thomas continued his sizzling hot start to the 2017 season. Thomas who weighs in at about 150 lbs and is known for being an explosive player that is extremely long off the tee. His aggressive play produces lots of birdies and exciting shot making, recently wielding a 59 at the Sony Open before leaving the field in the dust. Thomas has been one of the next “up and coming” guys expected to breakout on tour, and with his start to the 2017 season, it looks like the breakout is here. This of course spurred along much conversation and speculation about his swing and his game. Most notably to me (and Chuck Dietrick who planted the seed for this as a good POST article piece), is how Thomas hits 3-4 degrees up on his driver. This created debate on the Golf Channel as to whether or not the best players hit up on the ball with the driver. The Tour AVERAGE for Angle of Attack is about one degree down with the driver. This means that on average, the best players in the world are hitting down with their driver. However, there are plenty of guys that do both. And I would argue that the best drivers in the world (who are also the longest) are hitting up on the ball with the driver. Myself, and many instructors have been teaching and explaining the importance of hitting up on the ball with the driver for years. I know I have written about this before, and if you have worked with me this may sound redundant. But recently, this topic has again seemed to of hit the headlines and spurred debate. To me, it isn’t much of a debate, to some…or one (Brandel Chamblee) it seems to be. It is now proven by science and physics through data measuring devices such as Trackman that in order to maximize distance you need higher launch and lower spin. To reach the efficient amounts of each of these, each individual player does certain things differently. But, in general, it is proven fact that in order to launch it higher with less spin you need to hit UP on the driver. This holds especially true for players with lesser clubhead speeds. For example, the average Angle of Attack for LPGA players is up about 2.5 degrees. In order, for women to maximize their distance they HAVE to hit up on the ball. Thus, the reason that the PGA Tour hits down a degree is because many players have the luxury to choose what helps them be more consistent. However, often the idea that we can gain distance by hitting up on the ball is mistakenly equated with the assumption that it will also make us less consistent. This is simply not true. While hitting up TOO much can cause inconsistencies, the same can be said for hitting down too much. Except that, hitting down too much with the driver will make you crooked and short! The best drivers in the world, (Rory, DJ, Bubba, Day) all hit up on the ball…significantly. These players are often recognized as long hitters off the tee, and great players, but not great drivers when you figure accuracy into the equation. Again, another misnomer. They may not top the driving accuracy charts, because they are hitting it 320+ yards. Of course, guys like Jim Furyk, who hit it about 265 off the tee, are going to hit more fairways and be way more accurate in this singular statistic. However, when you then combine distance and accuracy through advanced metrics you will find the big names that I mentioned at the top of the list. Think about that, they are hitting it 50+ yards past some of these guys. Hitting wedges from the rough is still a significant advantage over hitting 6 irons from the fairway. So, if you want more distance AND accuracy off the tee, work on hitting up on the ball with the driver. The feeling of sweeping the ball off the tee will help you swing to the right, or inside-out, thus producing a higher launching and lower spinning shot. This technique will also improve contact, which is so critical with the driver. Hitting it in the heel of the driver will significantly decrease your distance by lower your trajectory and adding spin, and this often comes from a steeper/hitting down and more “over the top” swing. Those of you that have worked with me before know that I encourage using a foot powder spray on the driver face to show you where your contact is. Controlling your angle of attack is critical to consistent golf swings. Understanding how to do this with the driver is a good start in learning this technique. Our History … Our Rewards … Our Goal Hope for the Cause is in its 9th year. Incredibly, in our first 8 years we donated over $1.6 million to the HonorHealth Research Institute. We hope our Mirabel family is as proud as we are, because this wouldn’t be possible without you - our fellow members and community. As for our take aways … there are many! First and foremost, we ARE making a difference. Attend the Mirabel’s Miracles of Medicine Hour (M4Hour) to find out just how significantly. Second, we - you - have distinguished the Mirabel Community in a very special and meaningful way. Finally, and not insignificant, HonorHealth thanks us in a very special way with access. Two quick examples … • a member - new to Mirabel and Scottsdale - was in need of an orthopedist. A quick call to the HonorHealth Foundation got him a referral to a top notch specialist AND an appointment in a matter of days. • another longer standing member was in need of a specialist after having been partially treated over the holidays out of state and in need off immediate follow-up. An initial call to the recommended physician resulted in an appointment at the end of April. A call to HonorHealth Foundation and our member had an appointment with the same doctor in two days! We’ve all heard the wonderful and very moving stories of a number of our members who were facing grave diagnoses - and HonorHealth came to their rescue in heroic style. But they don’t stop there; HonorHealth is there for all of us - from the more “mundane” referrals to life-saving intervention. Thank you HonorHealth and Thank You Mirabel! Help us underscore that gratitude this year by cresting the $2 million mark in total donations. While we are somewhat astonished and deeply appreciative that we can set such a mighty goal, with your help, we believe we can do it! Here’s the 411 for getting the most from your Hope for the Cause experience: Registration Your registration forms are available on the website, by clicking on registration forms on the flyer and in the Mirabel office. Piper Cancer Center is the final opportunity to get involved during the Auction. Mirabel staff, as always, said “Yes! We can help!” so the FFB Mirabel Members Committee (April Barron, Amber Buckman, Peggy Cisar, Angie Dietrick, Belle Griffiths, Linda Howes, Terry Krivoruchka, Kathie McCabe, Jill Muth and Cindy Zitney) went to work. Together they want to thank all the Royal Bellas and Knights in Shining Armor who made this fifth annual event a huge success! This year we will send over $52,000 to the Foothills Food Bank which will fully fund the Snack Pack program for the 2017 school year. This program provides supplemental weekend food for qualifying school age children in need of nutritional snacks. Pam DiPietro, Executive Director of the FFB personally shared heartwarming thanks for many years of Mirabel support with volunteers, food and monetary donations for the building relocation, expansion and the Snack Pack Program. It is amazing to know that in five short years the Mirabel Community has donated over $150,000. Once again Mirabel has made a difference as well as a very good impression on our local community. FINAL THOUGHT FROM THE BOARD MIKE BAILEY - PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS As the calendar turns to February we put behind us an extremely cold and wet January. The weather forecast calls for a return to our more typical Arizona warmth which is great news. The excitement and activity around Mirabel is heating up also. In the gym our 4th Men’s Fitness Challenge is in full swing along with a wide array of fitness options. On the golf course, we just completed our Men’s and Women’s Coyote Combo capped with a fun celebration dinner. Looking ahead the Prickly Pair, our couples member guest, is being held on February 12th & 13th. We anticipate our largest field ever for this event. Later in the month we hold our Great Gal/Old Pal partner match play event. Remember, that beginning in February, our golf course is open for play on Monday’s with tee times beginning at 11:00am. Our dining room is also very busy. Our Valentine’s Day dinner will be a special night to spend with your valentine. We look forward to our new Theme nights on Thursday’s, our very popular Italian Sunday Suppers, along with our ala carte dining on Wednesday’s, Friday’s, and Saturday’s. Come enjoy the great creations from our Food and Beverage team. I was excited to see so many of you attend our “Meet Your Mirabel Leadership Team” meeting on January 17th. It gave us all an opportunity to get to know our Mirabel team even better. In my role as President, I get an opportunity to work closely with them on a daily basis. I can tell you that they are a very impressive group from top to bottom. They are passionate and totally committed to delivering the best experience possible for the Mirabel members. We are very fortunate to have such a quality group at Mirabel. Over this past month, I was able to observe the continuing generosity of the Mirabel membership. The Foothills Foodbank “High Tea” had record attendance and was a wonderful event. The donations of the Mirabel members will make a real difference for those in need in our local community. Additionally, I saw Mirabel members pull together to help fellow members overcome life’s challenges. We are all blessed to live in a community where people genuinely care about each other and willing to do whatever is necessary to help out. It’s pretty special. Financially, our club had a strong first quarter and good start to the year. We are $88,000 ahead of plan, and $66,000 ahead of last year. This puts us in good financial position as we head into the heart of the season. Thanks to each of you for your support!
