REVIEW
Let’s Review
Echo Characters
Literary Foils / Mismatched Pairs
Jordan & Nick
Daisy & Myrtle
Gatsby & Myrtle
Daisy & Tom
• How these characters act, relate, and play off each other will affect
how this story plays out.
• Tension: Social Status vs. Emotional Connection
DISEMBODIED FACE!!!!
•
“There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy and the
tired” (79)
•
“Unlike Gatsby and Tom Buchanan I had no girl whose
disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and
blinding signs and so I drew up the girl beside me, tightening
my arms.” (80)
•
What is Gatsby pursuing? Who is the disembodied face?
•
If that’s Daisy, what does that mean about her status in Gatsby’s mind?
•
We’ve talked about lack of connection, but what could be the dangers of
fantasized connection? Of being spiritually devoted to another person?
Tensions in the Story
• For Nick: Does he believe in the power of Gatsby?
•
Are Gatsby’s emotions enough, or will Nick stick with his Old Money judgment?
• For Gatsby: Will he be worthy of Daisy?
•
Can he buy his way into Old Money? Will Daisy accept him even if he doesn’t?
• Will everybody stay worried about money and social class, or will they
be able to form some human connections?
Individual Work
•
Work quietly (yes, really) for the next 25 minutes:
1.
Have chapter 4 notes out, ready for me to check.
2.
Work on reading to the end of chapter 5.
3.
If you need a copy of the chapter 5 Guided Notes, let me know when I
come around. These will be checked tomorrow.
a.
4.
Tomorrow we will focus especially on light and weather in this chapter
Some of you have zeros for previous notes, you can make up some points
by turning them in late.
Still more sketchiness?
• “you see, I carry on a little business on the side, a sort of sideline, you
understand” (82)
What seems to be Gatsby’s feeling as he talks about this?
• What kind of “sideline” business might Gatsby be involved in?
•
• “But, because the offer was obviously and tactlessly for a service to
be rendered, I had no choice except to cut him off there” (83)
Why was Gatsby trying to offer a side business to Nick?
• Why would Nick refuse this offer?
•
“blazing with light”
• “it was Gatsby’s house, lit from tower to cellar” (81)
•
Why might Gatsby have lit up his entire house in a way that can be seen from a
distance?
• Tomorrow we’ll focus on symbolism in this chapter
Pay attention to LIGHT
• Also notice the WEATHER
•
For Tomorrow
• Read to the end of Chapter 5
• Have notes ready for a grade
• Pay attention to LIGHT, COLOR, and WEATHER
