What Will Be Your Legacy?
Did you know that August is What Will Be Your Legacy Month? This means that
August is a time to think about how future generations will remember you and
what you did during your lifetime.
How do you want to be remembered? Maybe you want your children to
remember you as a loving parent who worked hard to provide for them.
Perhaps you want your friends to remember you as someone they could always
count on, or even as someone who always made them laugh and brought a
smile to their faces. You could want to be noted for your devotion to your work,
whether it be as a teacher, a medical professional, an administrative assistant,
or any other profession.
You may even hope to leave a legacy of service or goodwill to your community,
in the spirit of those like Martin Luther King Jr. Maybe you want to be the
president of the United States! Whatever your dreams may be, spend time in
August thinking about what you are doing now to achieve your goals. What
will be your legacy? It’s all up to you!

Stress is something that affects us all. A certain degree of stress is normal and,

act as a warning or a signal that some external factor needs to be addressed.
However, managing stress in a healthy way is essential to overall well-being.
According to WebMD, prolonged stress in one’s life can lead to headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems,
asthma, arthritis, depression and anxiety. Studies show that stress can also worsen other medical conditions. Here
are some easy ways to keep stress from negatively affecting your life.
Picture yourself doing something relaxing. Think of yourself in a favorite location, whether that be the beach, a
beautiful garden or your favorite city. The more vivid you can make the daydream, the more relaxed you will feel.
Stay in the here and now. Strive to enjoy your day-to-day activities, even the ones that are boring or tedious. Try to
avoid multi-tasking; after all, it is often less efficient than tackling one thing at a time. Also, focus on your immediate
surroundings and life’s small enjoyments, like that early-morning cup of coffee or a pleasant conversation with
your neighbor.
If you are feeling the effects of stress in your neck and back, try self-massage. Place both hands on your shoulders
and neck, and gently squeeze while taking deep breaths. You can also close your eyes and gently massage your
temples if you feel a headache coming on.
Listen to music. Slow, calming music will help lower your heart rate. Studies have shown that listening to 30 minutes
of classical music a day has a lasting, calming effect on how the body handles stress.

Letter from the Executive Director
Life has no smooth road for any of us. As we go down it, we need to
remember that happiness is a talent we develop, not
an object we seek. It is the ability to bounce back from
life’s inevitable setbacks. Some people are crushed by
misfortune: others grow because of it. The number of
Anna C., 5th
Edward G., 21st
breaks, lucky or those considered unlucky, that we get in
Moraima T., 10th
Alice B., 25th
life is not as important as what we do with them. The trick
is to never get truly comfortable.
Esther R., 14th
Alminda A., 26th
Others are constantly putting us to the test, as we often do
ourselves. People don’t wear out, but they often rust out.
What is easy is never valued. Constant success shows us only one side of life; we are never forced to stretch
and grow. We should never forget that the strongest souls — the most massive characters — are covered
with scars.
Prosperity is a great teacher; adversity is greater. One pampers the mind; the other trains and strengthens it.
Adversity brings out talents that in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. Byron once said,”A
man can see farther through a tear than a telescope.” Misfortune forces us to focus on our strengths and
develop them more fully, and that makes us better people.
