Database structure
The Belmanip database encompasses 398 sites over the 1997-2003 period. Only 323 sites
have been extracted in this version. A yearly tar archive contains at the first level the 323 sites
indicated by a directory named as the reference site number. Each directory (ie a Belmanip
site) contains 36 tar files describing the CYCLOPES L3A (ie normalized spectral reflectance
and directional parameters) or L3B (ie biophysical parameters) extracted information over an
area of 51 x 51 km² (ie 51 x 51 pixels) centred on the site coordinates.

Location information
The file Extracted_BELMANIP_sites_I1.00.xls gives, for each site, the site name, the geographical
coordinates, the land cover type, the CYCLOPES tile where the site is located, and the ground
network which instruments the site. It may be downloaded on the POSTEL website
(http://postel.mediasfrance.org/en/download/documents). The main geographical features are

L1->L2: Cloud spatial As a cloudy pixel is detected, all the pixels over a 2

false detections appeared

L1->L2: Lakes
1) Salt lakes present at regional scale in GLC2000
maps have been integrated at global scale
2) Cloud detection is no more active over salt lakes
L2->L3A:
filtering
Temporal 1) There is no more temporal and angular weight in
the filtering procedure but only for the last
directional parameters assessment
2) The ‘suspect’ pixels are taking into account in the
temporal synthesis
3) Minimal Nmod value fixed to 2 whatever the
wavelength
If a pixel is detected as snow during the synthesis,
the temporal filtering is not applied since all
observations are not always valid whatever the
wavelength. The inversion of directional 3-kernels
model is performed only once for each wavelength
L2->L3A: Directional If several kind of observations status (snow, clear,
parameters assessment cloud) are present in the synthesis, the whole month
over snow
is chosen as reference to determine the status of the
synthesis (ie a pixel is detected as snow if the
number of snow observations is greater than clear
observations in the month)

MIR: [0; 0.835]
L3A->L3B: Status
The bit 1 ‘Land/Sea’ indicates if the pixel is land or
sea
The bit 2 ‘Status’ indicates if the pixel is clear or
snowy
The bit 3 ‘Suspect’ indicates if the pixel is suspect
or not (see L1->L2 Cloud Spatial Extension)
The bit 4 ‘Aerosol status’ describes if pure
climatology (either MODIS products or a linear
latitudinal relationship) or a mixed of both has been
used for the atmospheric correction of observations
in the synthesis
The bit 5 ‘Aerosol source’ indicates the origin of
monthly aerosol climatology
The bit 6 ‘Parameter out of range or unvalid’ is
active (ie 1) if the biophysical parameter is out of
range ([0 6] for LAI; [0 1] for fCover and fAPAR)
or if no valid L3A product is available
The bit 7, bit 8 and bit 9 ‘Saturation B0/B2/B3’ is:
- ‘inactive’ if no saturated observation has
been removed in the synthesis for B0, B2,
B3,
- ‘active’ if saturated observations have been
removed from the temporal L3 fitting
present in B0, or B2 or B3 (but not for
MIR)
