The International Association of Lions Clubs District 14-B The Cauldron , May, 2016 Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos, My fellow Lions where has the time gone? We have just about sixty days to wrap up what we set out to accomplish at the beginning of this year. Hopefully you have met your goals, planned for the upcoming year with new officers and most importantly, reported them to Lions Clubs International on the appropriate forms or via the MyLCI website. If you have not submitted the report, another copy of the PU-101is included with this issue (pages 23 and 24). District membership, sorry to say, is down 17 members through the end of March. We still have time to recruit new members simply by Just Asking One. The following information should have been distributed at the beginning of this year. But it will now serve as what will be expected of any new club secretaries taking office on July 1st. The role of the Secretary is extensive. They are the link from the club to other clubs, to the zone, to the district and multiple Districts, and to Lions Clubs International. CONSTITUTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Submit monthly reports to Lions International 2. Submit to the district governor cabinet that International may require. 3. Cooperate with and be active member of the District Governor’s advisory committee of the zone that they are in. 4. Have custody, keep and maintain records of the minutes of the meeting of the club and board meetings; keep track of election, committee appointments, members address and phone numbers. Reports that the Secretary is responsible for filing include : 1. Monthly Membership Reports (prior to midnight on the last day of each month) 2. Monthly club Activities Reports (prior to midnight on the last day of each month) 3. Club Officers Report PU-101 (prior to May 15) 4. Club supplies order forms. 5. Family/Young Adult/Student Verification Forms. The Secretary is also a member of the advisory committee of the Zone Chairman and as such shall promote attendance at functions in the district, multiple district and international convention. Congratulations to President Mike Zaken from the Pleasant Hills Lions Club, President Joe Funtal from the Coraopolis Lions Club, our District Peace Poster Chair Mary Ann Belles from the Pleasant Hills Lions Club and PDG Harold Fletcher from the Central Elizabeth Lions Club. (See pages 2 and 3 for details!) Congratulations to Dave Donis and Ed Manfredi on their Pennsylvania Counsellors Awards.(We were informed just several hours before the presentation of the award to Lion Manfredi, that he had passed away earlier on the day he was to receive his award at the Spring Party. He was also pleased to have friends PID Cindy Gregg and her husband PDG Tom attending. Guest speaker, Past International Director Wayne E. Davis was the keynote speaker and was accompanied by his wife Marge. His message was well received as were his short stories. Awards were presented as depicted in the following photos. An overview of the banquet room which saw close to one hundred Lions and guests attending Leo Breann Barbera from the Mon River Fleet Leo Club receives accolades from PID Davis and PDG Mary Jane Keller as second place winner in MD 14 as Leo of the Year. (see additional information about her on page 3.) MEET OUR “LEO OF THE YEAR” District 14-B is extremely proud of Mon River Fleet Leo Breann Barbera. Breann placed second in Pennsylvania’s Leo of the Year award. She is a senior at McKeesport Area High School in the Allied Health Program and is a member of MAHS Future Nurses Club and Skills USA. She also was recognized as the second place winner of the Skills USA – Health Occupation portfolio in District 8 competition. Since May of 2015 she has excelled and demonstrated her leadership ability in her role as secretary of her club. Last October she coordinated and scheduled time slots for the staff and residents during the Flu Vaccine & Blood Drive sponsored by McKeesport Area Rescue Squad and the Mon River Fleet SHIP. At McKeesport Senior High School more than 100 people received vaccines. During UPMC’s Family Easter Brunch, Breann was the bunny. Volunteering in both the Mon River Fleet and White Oak Lions Pancake breakfasts, collecting pennies for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and helping with the “Lions Auction for Diabetes” sponsored by the Lions of District B & E, UPMC McKeesport Hospital and The McKeesport Hospital Foundation has kept her quite busy for the last three years. In addition, Breann has mentored younger students in the UPMC/ McKeesport Area Technology Center apprenticeship program, and has never refused any assignment her teachers have asked. We wish her the best in her future endeavors, and hope she will eventually become a Lion. Past District Governor Geoff Temple from the Pleasant Hills Lions Club was honored with the presentation of the Joseph L. Wroblewski Award by the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation “For believing We Serve Better Together.” Congratulations to PDG Geoff! Lion Geoff is the Secretary of the Pleasant Hills Lions Club and the Guiding Lion for the University of Pittsburgh Lions Club. Zone Chair Region 2, Zone B, Lion Dorothy Kuharski, also President of the White Oak Lions Club, presented PID Davis with a handcrafted memento from District 14B. A special thank you to PDG Rich Keller and Zone Chair George Belles for providing all the pictures in such a timely fashion! Four Lions were presented with the International President’s Certificates of Appreciation, the fourth highest honor bestowed on a Lion. Shown below are the four recipients with PID Wayne Davis and DG Joe Donkin. Congratulations to all four! Lion Mike Zaken, President of the Pleasant Hills Lions Club. Lion Lion Mary Ann Belles. District Peace Poster Chair/Secretary of the Whitehall Lions Club. Lion Joseph Funtal, President of the Coraopolis Lions Club. 3 PDG Harold Fletcher, from the Central Elizabeth Lions Club, District Historian and Cauldron Editor FROM THE DESK OF 1ST VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR BRANDON... Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos, Hello everybody! I am writing to you on this beautiful spring day to give you my updates and observations for the month, as well as some updates on my upcoming year as DG. As you are all aware of my background as a chiropractor and a businessman you can understand some of my observations, and unfortunately some of my disappointments in what I have seen recently. I have read numerous books about running a business and how to succeed and some of those lessons can be applied here to the Lions. The first book is called Who Moved My Cheese. It focuses on 4 main characters; Hem, Haw, Sniff, and Scurry. They were given the task of finding cheese in a maze and problem solving to get there. If you can guess where this is going, Hem and Haw never got to the cheese, while Sniff and Scurry found the cheese by working together. In Lionism, you would hope that we are a bunch of Sniff and Scurry; however, my observations are that there are a lot more Hem and Haw. This is an extremely disappointing thing to me because instead of watching things happen we all like to sit back and hope it happens. Clearly in the last few years it hasn’t happened, and by not changing anything we won’t make it happen. That is FACT. Sometimes you must hit rock bottom before you can start your ascent, and right now is time for us to start to ascend and make 14-B what it used to be. The second book is called Eat That Frog. The moral of this story is about getting things done and to stop procrastinating. The biggest idea taken from this book is that if you have a long list of things to get done and one of them is to eat the biggest nastiest frog you have ever seen, you want to do that first. If the hardest thing to do is what is holding you back from finishing everything else, why not get that out of the way first? We see this constantly with the membership problems that we all face. I know there is no magic bullet in finding new members, and I say this. There is no right or wrong way to do it. The only thing that must happen is that it must be appealing to the ones you want. Onto some positive news. I want to thank Lion Dorothy Kuharski and Lion Ralph Imbrogno for having me speak at their joint Zone meeting. There were a lot of friendly faces in the room and a lot of good ideas shared throughout. Good job to everybody in Region 2 Zone A and B. One last thing before I go for the month, the first YouTube video has been posted. If you type in the following link it should pull up. Also you can search Lions 14-B and the video will pull right up. Feel free to comment on the video and as always email me at [email protected] with any questions comments or concerns. I looked into it and discovered that Melvin Jones was one of the founders and initiators of the Lions International Stamp Club (LISC). All of this started in the 1920s and in 1951 Lions Clubs International founded the Lions stamp club with its own Constitution, rules, regulations and Policy Manual. This stamp club is independent from Lions Clubs International. Any changes to the Constitution must be approved by the LCI Board of Directors and the Legal Department. Basically any cancelled stamp that had anything to do with Lions or Lions logo, including Lions International Conventions and fundraisers were collected. Apparently, it was common practice to have special stamps made for these events. Stamps For The Wounded started during WW ll. The collected stamps were sent to wounded soldiers recovering from their wounds and those who had a long recovery time. Now days the Stamps For The Wounded works independently from LISC. Many international Lions Clubs are still collecting used stamps and sending them to LISC chapters were they are used for rehabilitation and fundraising projects. I did contact Bob about the stamps and he said he sends regular cancelled stamps with an inch of the envelop around the stamp to his niece who sends them on to Stamps For The Wounded, SFTW/LIONS, PO Box 297, Dunn Loring, VA 22027. This might be something a club would want to do as a fundraiser. For more information check LCIF and Lions International Stamp Club. A THANK YOU FROM ZONE CHAIR DOROTHY KUHARSKI I would like to let my fellow Lions members in District 14-B know just how grateful I am for all the support I have received from the seven clubs in Region 2, Zone B this past year. The knowledge and friendship I’ve acquired from each and every one of you is truly appreciated. You were able to show me how much you care enough to help others when needed in your communities. As a Senior Lion of the “pack”, we all provide services in many unique ways. Lionism is more than attending meetings or participating in events. We are Lions who always push forward. WE build membership and make the foundation stronger, but keeping the wisdom that comes from the other older Lions who have given a lifetime of service. Visiting the seven clubs twice a year is such a rewarding experience. WE share laughter, solve the problems of the world, but the most wonderful thing we share is a fellowship with each other. As a Senior Lion of the “pack” in Region 2, Zone B, I am proud of all the accomplishments made by serving the blind to the best of our ability and by helping others. Everyone in District 14-B are dedicated Lions and all of you have taken the challenge from Helen Keller to become Knights of the Blind. Friends Always, Lion Dorothy Kuharski Region 2, Zone B Chair IT’S GREAT TO BE A LION ! 11 McKEESPORT LIONS - ALWAYS ON THE MOVE! Members of the McKeesport Lions Club participated in Earth Day activities which were organized by the City of McKeesport. The City held a “Hard to Recycle” event where old televisions, computers, tires and other items which are hard to dispose of were collected. During the event, club members helped residents unload these items from their automobiles, sold Lions brooms and garbage bags, collected old eyeglasses and collected American flags for proper disposal. Members of the club also picked up litter along a stretch of Eden Park Boulevard during the day. Left to right: Tony Ura, Chuck Jarrell, Linda Povirk, Hank Gostkowski, Bobbie Billsborrow, Donna Byrne, Mike Gach 12 District Lions Clubs Continue to Support Leader Dogs For the Blind and the Canine Development Center As the Canine Development Center at Rochester Hills, Michigan nears completion the overall commitment of Lions Clubs, in general, and the Lions Clubs in District 14-B, in particular, to this 14.5 million dollar project, cannot be over-stated and by this projects end Lions Clubs contributions will account for 20% of the total costs. Take a look at http://www.leaderdog.org/canine-center. The Canine Development Center will provide a calmer environment for the dogs increasing the percentage of dogs that will successfully complete the program and increasing the number of clients that can be provided with a dog. The new facility houses a centrally located veterinary clinic with a staff of 2 full-time veterinarians and 4 technicians. The clinic area has been enlarged to allow for on-site diagnostics. The new facility will also provide larger kennels with more space in the middle area to reduce stress to each dog and increase human interaction. A new breeding area and a new puppy area with more room for the puppies is also part of the new center. The new puppy area gives the puppies more room and the layout enables the puppies to naturally walk and not be transported, a stressful activity, to different parts of the facility. The reaching of the financial goal allowing for the completion of the Canine Development Center does not reduce the need for continuing financial support from the Clubs of District 14-B. This facility has been a Lions Club endeavor from its onset in 1939 and the current CEO is a Lion and Beth Slade, the Lion Liaison, for Leader Dogs for the Blind has an office onsite to assist Lions Clubs in this continuing support. District 14-B Clubs have been consistent in giving annual donations to Leader Dogs for the Blind and during the current period of construction, many clubs have made contributions specifically for the building of the Canine Development Center. On May 7, 2016, the Monroeville and Pitcairn Lions Clubs are holding a “Lions Leader Dog Jog” and Fun Walk with the net proceeds from this event going to Leader Dogs for the Blind. In addition to club events such as the “Lions Leader Dog Jog” and Fun Walk donations can be made to Leader Dogs to honor a pet or someone special, one can request donations to Leader Dog in Lion of say birthday gifts, and workplace and community organizations can raise funds collectively for Leader Dogs. Leader Dogs for the Blind is a registered charity with Amazonsmile. If Leader Dog is selected as the donor charity by the purchaser, 0.5% of each purchase made by the purchaser will go to Leader Dogs for the Blind. Designating Leader Dogs for the Blind as your donor charity only takes a few minutes on the Amazon.com website. Donations to Leader Dogs for the blind gives independence and self-reliance to blind individuals through a quality dog providing independence to the blind has of course been a goal of Lionism since its beginning.
