SUAREZ CAUCA STORY / SINGLE ORIGIN suarez cauca COLOMBIA FARMER: MULTIPLE ROAST level: LIGHT DARK ALTITUDE: VARIeTALS: 8200 FEET MIXED PROCESS: HARVEST: WASHED SEPT-DEC FLAVOR NOTES: BROWN SUGAR COLA RED GRAPE This macro-lot coffee comes from a collection of harvests from farmers around the Suarez region of Cauca, Colombia. It was chosen by our import partners at Café Imports as a result of it’s high score at the Cauca Best Cup regional competition held by Café Imports and Banexport. The volcanic ash in the soil of Suarez, along with its sun and altitude contribute to the region’s high coffee yield and produces favorable flavor characteristics. During the Cauca Best Cup competition, coffees are cupped and scored from farmers around the region. If the coffees scored above an 86, they are selected and blended to create a regional blend, much like Rhone wine. BREW method SUGGESTIONS According to Joe Morrocco of Café Imports, this program is meant to achieve two goals. The first is to develop a regional flavor profile, much like the wine industry has done in places such as Sonoma. The second is to provide more equity to the region’s participating farmers. Coffees that score well enough to be bought for the regional blend receive 50¢ - 60¢ per pound over market value. This helps the producers to invest in improvements on their farms and in the community, as well as provide incentives for other producers to improve the quality of their harvests. HIGHLY REVIEWED: Our roast of Suarez Cauca Best Cup earned a 93 point score from Ken Davids at Coffee Review.
