Overview
- This tutorial IS designed to give users an understanding of how to download eResources from Southern
Illinois Libraries on the Go (SILGO).
- This tutorial IS intended to show users how to use integrate SILGO with the Overdrive applications and
their Kindle device/application.
- This tutorial IS NOT intended for beginners. Users should already have a basic understanding of SILGO.

What is Overdrive?
- Overdrive is a FREE application available for multiple devices (computers, tablets, cell phones, etc.) and
platforms (Apple, Windows, Android, Kindle, and Nook HD/HD+).
- The Overdrive apps streamline the SILGO process and help to fully create an “On the Go” experience.
- The computer application is necessary to download and transfer audiobooks using your computer.
- The mobile application is capable of downloading and viewing eBooks, as well as, playing audiobooks
available from SILGO.
- The Overdrive application is not necessary to browse, borrow, or manage your SILGO bookshelf online.
- The mobile app makes borrowing and downloading eBooks very easy.
**Devices vary and there can be many application versions with different updates. There will be
subtle differences based off of these factors. For additional help with a specific device, contact
the library or review some help tips from Overdrive (http://help.overdrive.com/).
Downloading Overdrive – Computer App
1. Go to: app.overdrive.com.
2. Click “Download Overdrive”.
3. Select your computer operating system (Mac/ Windows). Select “Windows Desktop” if you have a
Windows PC that has Windows 7, XP, or any other previous version of the operating system.
4. Click “Save File.”
5. Open the File. The file will save by default to your “Downloads” folder.
6. Click “Run.”
7. Follow the installer. Click “Next.”
8. Click “I Agree” and the “Next.”
9. Click “Next” to install to the “Program Files” folder.
10. Confirm by clicking “Next” once more. Then click “Close.”
Downloading Materials – MP3 Audiobooks
1. Login to your SILGO account.
2. Borrow an MP3 audiobook. For convenience you can use filters to limit the “Format” by selecting
“Overdrive MP3 Audiobook.”
3. Borrowing an item will automatically take you to your bookshelf. Otherwise click “Account.”
4. Click “Download (MP3 Audiobook).”
5. Click “OK” to Open with Overdrive.
6. Click “OK” again to save the files.
7. Click “OK” and your download will begin.
8. Select the item and press play (or double click).
9. Use the player to navigate the book.
Transferring Materials – MP3 Audiobooks
Overdrive is capable of burning items directly to a CD. Just click the item you would like burn and then
click burn. This will bring up a “Wizard” to help guide you through the rest of the process.
Overdrive is also capable of transferring items to iTunes. If you do not have iTunes, it is also a free
download. To transfer, simply click transfer in the toolbar and the book will be available in your iTunes
library.
Another way to transfer your item is to locate the audiobook on your hard-drive and move it directly to
another folder or put on another device, such as, an MP3 player, tablet or flash drive.
In Windows, the audiobook files will be placed in “My Documents” » “My Media” » “MP3 Audiobooks”
by default.
Downloading Overdrive – Device App
- You can install Overdrive on your tablet, smartphone, or other device by downloading the free
application directly from the application store associated with your device. The application is made for
borrowing, downloading, and viewing/listening to SILGO items.
- THE OVERDRIVE MOBILE APP IS AVAILABLE FOR: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, Android, Windows
Phone, Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire (1st Gen), Nook® HD/HD+, Nook® Color/Tablet
1. Download and install Overdrive from the store associated with your device.
2. Open the application and create an account with your name, email address, and password.
3. After sign-in, click the Overdrive icon or swipe from left to right and click “+Add a library.”
4. Browse for Sallie Logan Library or enter “62966” in the ZIP code search bar.
5. Select Sallie Logan Library.
6. Click “Sign In” and log into your SILGO account.
7. You are now ready to browse, search, and borrow from the device on the SILGO website.
Kindle eBooks
- You can make an eBook available “On the Go” by downloading the Kindle book and syncing it to your
Kindle or your Kindle app. The Kindle app is free and also available from most device stores, even Nook
devices with Google Play.
1. Go to your “Bookshelf.”
2. Click the “Download” arrow.
3. Place a checkmark next to “Kindle Book.”
4. Click “Confirm & Download.”
- After clicking confirm and download, Amazon’s webpage will open and you will need to complete a
couple more steps before your book is available on Kindle.
5. Click “Get library book.”
6. Sign into your Amazon account. Create a free account, if needed.
7. Your Kindle device should already be associated with an account. If you have downloaded a Kindle
Reader app for your device you will need to sign into your Amazon account to sync your items.
8. If you have a Kindle, your device will appear in the drop down menu. If you have the Kindle app, select
“Kindle Cloud Reader” and then press continue.
9. Now you can “sync” your device and the items will appear in your collection. Go to the Kindle (or
Kindle app) and click the menu (top left corner) then click “Sync.”
- A Kindle book has options. Users must log into Amazon and then select “Manage Your Content and
Devices” from the account menu. This will show you a list of all items on your Kindle.
- Your library items show up as “Borrowed.” Click the grey box under “Actions.” You can:
1. “Deliver” – This allows you to move your item to a different device.
2. “Download & Transfer this item via USB” – This allows you to move the item from the computer to a
device without syncing the device.
3. “Clear furthest page read” – This option will clear the memory and default the book to the beginning.
4. “Return this book” – This option will remove the item from your Amazon account and your SILGO
account.
5. “Read Now” – Read your book in the browser window with the Kindle Cloud Reader.
6. “Purchase this book” – This will take you to the item on Amazon for purchase.

- This tutorial will help you download items and transfer/sync these items to multiple devices.

Tips and Basic Troubleshooting
-Be sure to download and sync items to avoid the constant need for an internet connection.
-Devices vary, but they have many similarities. Android, Apple, and some Nook device platforms have
access to the Kindle app and the Overdrive app is available for computers, tablets, and smartphones.
-If you cannot return a book from your bookshelf inside of SILGO, it means this items has been
downloaded. You must return downloaded items through the Overdrive computer app, your Amazon
account, or your Nook.
