ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Petra Hektorovića 2 HR 10 000 Zagreb T: +385 1 4882 555 [email protected] www.znanjenadjelu.hr ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Zaklada Znanje na djelu / Stiftung Wissen am Werk The foundation Zaklada Znanje na djelu / Stiftung Wissen am Werk (ZND / WaW) is a non-‐profit organization created by a group of public figures and leading Croatian business people in response to the high youth unemployment rate and ‘brain drain’ in Croatia. ZND was established in June 2014 in Zagreb by thirteen founders and works to address the gap between education and the business sector as a key factor in solving the problem of employability. The Foundation’s statute was approved by the Ministry of Public Administration on February 24, 2015, and ZND has been fully operative since March 2015. Pupils of tourism, language and sport schools learn about tourism management at the Valamar Riviera in Poreč Exploring Worlds of Work, October 2016 The ZND Vision The Foundation’s core vision is for children and young people to be informed about the challenges and realities of different workplaces, new professions, entrepreneurship and the flexibility demanded by the new labour market, i.e. to make responsible decisions that will ease their transition from education and training into employment. 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Many young people in Croatia are unaware of the diverse options open to them after completing school. ZND addresses teachers and young people on all levels of education (elementary, secondary and vocational). The programmes offer visits and job-‐shadowing opportunities to school pupils, providing young people with experience of how today’s businesses and institutions work. They also give educators the opportunity to enrich teaching through practice-‐orientation, explorative learning and creativity in the context of work and careers. ZND aims to help young people make informed decisions about training and qualifications and to assume responsibility for their professional future. The programmes are created in partnership with local schools, education authorities, businesses, institutions and social enterprises. The ZND Mission Znanje na djelu / Wissen am Werk aspires to strengthen: •

Practice-‐based education. Together with our partners (schools, businesses, institutions and social enterprises) ZND is building a strong network between the education system and the world of work. Mobility and innovation. The circulation of knowledge on local and national levels, and the international exchange of experience in the areas of education and work generate innovation and sustainable development at home. ZND aims to expand the perspectives of young people and make them aware of innovation challenges. Social responsibility. ZND’s programmes are designed to motivate young people to find solutions to pressing issues in society, to make informed decisions and take responsibility for their professional lives and social roles. Equal opportunities and gender equality. ZND encourages the inclusion of young people of diverse socio-‐cultural backgrounds and the development of an intercultural and multi-‐
lingual training and work environment. It specifically promotes technical and scientific training for girls. ZND’s network and programmes are open to all who share the Foundation's vision and would like to promote its aims. Pupils take part in the programmes Exploring Worlds of Work, April 2016, and Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation, May 2016 2 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 ACTIVITIES IN 2016 Administration / Operation In March, Dr. Karin Taylor joined the team as office manager. Take a look! (Tko radi u zgradi?) is aimed at school children between eight and ten years of age, and organizes one-‐day group visits to businesses, institutions and social enterprises. See how it works! (Pogledaj. Probaj. Doživi.) targets individual secondary school pupils, and organises two-‐day ‘job-‐shadowing’ placements. Visits to companies and institutions initiate a communication process between professionals, HR managers and youth. Get to know each other! (Spajamo znanje, stvaramo iskustvo) addresses teachers, and organizes one-‐day visits to businesses and entrepreneurship workshops. By including teachers in preparatory on-‐site workshops, the programme promotes an innovative approach to learning and career path design for all participants, on all levels. In 2016, the following visits and internships were organised in the framework of the programme: Take a Look! (Tko radi u zgradi?) • A Zagreb elementary school class toured confectionary company Kraš d.o.o. in June. See how it works! (Pogledaj. Probaj. Doživi.) • Together with Adecco d.o.o, ZND organized the Adecco Street Day event in Zagreb in March, where 70 school-‐leavers benefited from CV-‐writing and job interview workshops. • Between April and May, 60 pupils from fifteen Zagreb secondary schools spent two days at their 'dream job' in 26 partner companies and institutions in Zagreb. The ZND team was impressed by the enthusiasm and language skills of many pupils. • In October, 59 pupils and 16 teachers from eight Zagreb secondary schools went on a two-‐
day visit to the Valamar Riviera in Poreč where they explored the multiple professions involved in running a hotel complex and tested their own skills. 6 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 •
In November and December, four pupils from the Vladimir Nazor secondary school in Zadar spent two-‐day internships in four Zadar companies (Falkensteiner Hotels and Residences, Hotel Mediteran, Reem Electronic d.o.o., Vyonyx d.o.o.). Four more pupils will take part in the Zadar job-‐shadowing programme in January 2017. Get to know each other! (Spajamo znanje, stvaramo iskustvo) •
In May, a group of teachers from Slavonia visited wood-‐processing firm Furnir Otok d.o.o. (in cooperation with the teacher training agency, AZOO). Pupils from the Miroslav Krleža elementary school in Zagreb visit Kraš d.o.o.; Marija G. ‘shadows’ a hospital doctor in KBC Rebro, Exploring Worlds of Work, May and June 2016 Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation In early 2016, ZND together with Croatia’s leading scientific research institute, Ruđer Bošković (IRB), launched a new programme for secondary school pupils. 'Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation' is designed to grow awareness about STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and to gear education towards career development and work prospects in the STEM fields. The programme (1) encourages pupils to practically explore natural phenomena and mathematical or technical questions of relevance to daily life; (2) encourages curiosity and develops experimental, explorative approaches to learning; (3) supports participants in acquiring a realistic perspective on how STEM is applied in everyday life and in research, industry and business. The one-‐day programme introduces participants to real scientific projects at IRB in the frame of morning workshops run by scientists. In the afternoon, participants visit companies where they observe the application of science in industry. • In March, 100 teachers took part in eight workshops at the Ruđer Bošković Institute and visited waste water management company ZOV Zagrebačke otpadne vode d.o.o. • In May, 100 pupils took part in nineteen science workshops and saw how the same techniques are applied in eight companies and institutions in Zagreb (Genos d.o.o., Končar 7 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 d.d., Siemens d.d., Xellia d.o.o., Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d., ZOV d.o.o., Centar za forenzična istraživanja Ivan Vučetić, INA d.d.). The programme for pupils was run in conjunction with the Institute’s annual 'Open Doors Day at IRB' and pupils presented the results of their experiments to the public on 14.05.2016. Pupils participate in science workshops at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation, May 2016 Teachers, school directors, partner companies and sponsors were invited to a joint ZND and IRB promotional event on November 25, where Dr. Tomislav Portada and two ZND alumni demonstrated the chemistry of glow sticks. Programme Evaluation Participants in ZND programmes were asked to evaluate their experiences and received certificates confirming their participation. Exploring Worlds of Work and Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation received overwhelmingly positive evaluations from pupils and teachers. Ivan, 17, M ay 2016. 8 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Teachers visit Zagrebačke otpadne vode (ZOV) Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation, March 2016 Other Strategic Projects Generation in Transition Network In early 2016, ZND joined an international project network titled 'Mapping a Generation in Transition' supported by the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (BpB). The network includes a range of partners from civil society/NGOs and academia from Germany and Eastern European countries. It researches, discusses and presents topics of relevance to a generation that experienced the transition from communism as young children and teenagers, and as adults today are assuming responsibility for the democratic and economic development and EU integration of their respective societies. Within the framework of 'Mapping a Generation in Transition', Rafaela Tripalo undertook research on how young Croatians see the challenges of immigration and presented results at a conference in Vienna in November. ZND also hosted the network’s bi-‐annual meeting in Zagreb on 12.–
15.11.2016. NECE Conference As local partner, ZND provided organisational support to the Networking European Citizenship Education / NECE 2016 conference, one of the biggest NGO meetings in Europe, organised by the German Federal Agency for Civic Education, BpB, with European partners in Zagreb on November 10–12. This support was funded by an ERSTE Foundation grant. https://www.bpb.de/veranstaltungen/netzwerke/nece/227285/nece-‐conference-‐2016-‐zagreb Against the background of a global ‘refugee crisis’ deeply affecting the state of the European Union and its neighbors, NECE 2016 aimed at two areas: Firstly, the conference looked at the diverse European responses to the issue of migration and discussed the divisions within and between European societies. Secondly, participants explored how citizenship education could react to the polarizing debate and controversies about migration, diversity and identity, which have been triggered by migration movements in the past eighteen months. 9 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 ZND hosted a group of NECE participants from Ukraine, Armenia, Germany and the Netherlands who together discussed the mission and activities of the Foundation. EDU-‐LAB Project ZND is starting out on its first EU project. Together with the private university VERN, ZND is one of two Croatian partners in the 2017–2019 EDU-‐LAB project to better align tertiary education with labour markets in the wider Danube region led by the European Foundation for Education (EFE). The project under the title 'New Danubian Governance in Labour Market Relevance of Higher Education (EDU-‐LAB)’ received approval for EU funding in December 2016 and is set to begin in January 2017. The consortium consists of ten partner countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Belgium). The application was submitted in the framework of the EU-‐Transnational Danube Programme (DTP) under P4 of the Danube Strategy (well-‐governed Danube region) with the specific objective (SO 4.1) to improve institutional capacities to tackle major societal challenges. The project’s duration is 30 months. OUTLOOK 2017 Programme consolidation 2017 will be a year of consolidation in which the existing programmes are run with a focus on improving preparation and registration procedures, strengthening the partner network, and building sustainable programme funding. Exploring Worlds of Work at the Valamar Riviera in Poreč, October 2016 Exploring Worlds of Work 2017 ZND aims to again include 60 secondary school pupils in its work experience programme See how it works! (Pogledaj. Probaj. Doživi.) The programme will take place earlier than last year, with mini-‐
internships planned for March and April. 10 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 In addition, ZND will pilot a preparation workshop ‘Skok u budućnost’ (Jump into the future) designed to introduce pupils to the basics of CV-‐writing, how to prepare for interviews, and communication skills at the workplace. The two-‐hour workshop will be run at partner schools as part of the pupil selection process for job-‐shadowing. All candidates will be interviewed by a ZND panel before they are matched with host companies/institutions. In October 2017, ZND plans to organise another two-‐day visit to the Valamar Riviera in Poreč for pupils of tourism schools, ‘gimnazija’ schools and sport schools. Exploring Worlds of Science and Innovation (STEM. Rastem. Istražujem.) 2017 In May, ZND and IRB will again run the joint ‘Science and Innovation’ programme at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. ZND plans to include some 100 teachers and 100 pupils, as in 2016. The registration process will be undertaken by ZND, with information disseminated to teachers by the state teacher training agency, AZOO. Scheduled dates for the science workshops and company visits: For teachers: 05.05.2017. For pupils: 12.05.2017, incl. participation in the IRB Open Day on 13.05.2017. Project and Partnership Developments 2017–2018 EDU-‐LAB. The EU-‐funded project (2.5 years, see Strategic Projects) to improve the labour market relevance of higher education in the wider Danube region will begin with a stakeholder conference in March 2017. Within this project, ZND will be responsible for developing and preparing a Danubian Charter on education. Back to School. This new ZND project aims to invite prominent professionals and businesspeople into schools to talk about their career paths, interests and motivation. The ‘Back to School’ talks should give teenagers the opportunity to engage directly with a compelling and successful personality, to broaden their perspectives and obtain advice about ‘real’ chances, and inspire young people to go for their dreams. Junior Engineering Academy (JEA). This project initiated and run by the Deutsche Telekom Stiftung is expanding to eastern and southeastern Europe. ZND has been approached as a Croatian partner in the JEA school exchange programme, which brings pupils from Germany and partner countries together to work on engineering projects developed by STEM teachers. Hrvatski Telekom (HT) has signalled interest in running a one-‐day workshop for Croatian and visiting German secondary school pupils within this framework. https://www.telekom-‐stiftung.de/sites/default/files//dts-‐library/body-‐files/rechte-‐
