The Society for Range Management Records were donated to the American
Heritage Center by various members of the Society beginning in the early 1950s forward.
Where discernible, original order was maintained. The material without any apparent
original order was arranged to facilitate researcher use. Preservation photocopies were
made to replace deteriorated papers.
The collection should be cited as: Society for Range Management Records, Accession

History
The Society for Range Management was organized in the summer of 1947
after a 1946 meeting of interested parties, with Joseph F. Pechanec as its first president.
The Society was officially formed at its first meeting on January 29-31, 1948, in Salt
Lake City, Utah. Its mission was “to foster advancement in the science and art of grazing
land management,” and it was established to provide an outlet and a venue for the
dissemination and promotion of the principles of range management. By 2002, the
Society had accumulated approximately four thousand members in forty-eight countries.

for Range Management, 1948-1985, contained in Series IV, Publications, of this
collection.
Series Description
The Society for Range Management Records are divided into ten series:
Series I. Administrative Files, 1940-1998. 28.8 cubic feet (64 document boxes).
Arranged alphabetically by subject or document type and then chronologically.
This series contains reports, correspondence, memoranda, programs, and assorted
printed material documenting the management of the Society for Range
Management at the national level.
Series II. Committee Files, 1948-2000. 16.7 cub ic feet (37 document boxes). Arranged
alphabetically by committee title or document type and then chronologically.
This series contains reports, correspondence, and miscellaneous printed material
regarding the operation of the numerous committees of the Society for Range
Management.
Series III. Section Files, 1947-1994. 9 cubic feet (20 document boxes). Arranged
alphabetically by section name and subject or document type, then
chronologically. This series contains correspondence, reports, newsle tters, and
other assorted printed material relating to the establishment and operations of the
Society’s local sections.
Series IV. Publications, 1948-1998. 5.4 cubic feet (12 document boxes). Arranged
alphabetically by publication title, subject, or document type and then
chronologically. This series contains copies of Society publications,
correspondence, manuscripts, reports, and other material germane to the
publishing functions of the Society for Range Management.
Series V. Affiliated Organizations, 1946-1999. 5 cubic feet (11 document boxes).
Arranged alphabetically by organization name or type, then chronologically. The
series consists of material on private and government agencies associated with the

Series VI. Photographs, 1894-1999. 3.2 cub ic feet (7 document boxes). Arranged
alphabetically by subject and then chronologically. This series contains
photographs of individuals important to the Society’s history as well as of specific
range conditions and equipment associated with range management.
Series VII. Subject Files, 1915-1989. 1.6 cubic feet (3 document boxes, 1 slim document
box). Arranged alphabetically by subject. This series consists of material
germane to the study of range management. It contains manuscripts, reports, and
miscellaneous printed material.
Series VIII. Artifacts, 1969-1969. .5 cubic feet (1 3”x5” card file box, 1 F17 box). This
series contains a plaque presented by the Society for the Frederic G. Renner
Award, a Society-printed three-ring binder, and pins, badges and nametags from
various Society meetings.
Series IX. Oversize Material, 1972-1992. (6 folders). This series consists of
miscellaneous oversize material. Included are plans for a proposed Society office
building and promotional posters fo r the Society’s annual meetings.
Series X. Audio-Visual Material, ca.1977. (2 items). This series consists of two film
strips on range management created as part of the Society’s Old West Regional
Commission grant of the late 1970s.
Scope and Content
The Society for Range Management records primarily consist of documentation
of the institutional operations of the Society. The material is largely administrative in
nature and offers the researcher a fairly complete picture of how the Society has been run
from its inception in 1947 until 1990. After 1990, the documentation is less complete.
All aspects of the Society’s functions are covered, from its internal bookkeeping to its
connection to federal legislative bodies through its Washington, DC, liaison office. The
records offer a unique perspective on how a membership organization can influence what
happens in college classrooms, on public land and private ranches and farms, as well as
on the floors of Congress. The Society sought to gather into its membership not only
legislators and university professors, but students, ranchers, and public land technicians
and managers as well. As a result, there is a wide variety of material on how the Society
attempted to attract these various constituencies. Range management as a science blends

the principles of ecology with those of economics toward the goal of maximizing the
productive capacity of the land, and these themes are treated repeatedly in the many
reports and Society publications contained within the records. The Society for Range
Management is an organization fiercely committed to the preservation of its own
heritage, and its records reflect that. The records offer a remarkably complete picture of
a membership body concerned with conservation that has coped with governmental,
academic, and cultural changes over a span of more than fifty years.
