User Bulletin No. 64 Models 380A, 380B, 381A, 391, 391EP, 392, 394 (updated 06/2002) SUBJECT: Installing the Secondary Container at Bottle Position 18 Introduction All Applied Biosystems DNA synthesizers are equipped with a plastic secondary container (Applied Biosystems P/N 140041) designed to contain spills and to protect laboratory personnel and equipment from the effects of a bottle rupture at position 18 (the 4-liter acetonitrile bottle). The lid of the secondary container must be correctly installed and securely in place whenever bottle 18 is pressurized. ! WARNING ! Failure to use the secondary container correctly may expose the user to the risk of bodily harm. If you do not have a secondary container for your external 4-liter bottle, Applied Biosystems strongly advises you to stop using your instrument and order a replacement immediately from your nearest Applied Biosystems Sales office, distributor, or scientific products supplier (Nalgene™ 4-L Safety Bottle Carrier. Nalge 6501-4000). Installation of the Secondary Container Installation of the secondary container should be done: • before the instrument is pressurized, or • after the cap assembly is loosened, to vent bottle 18, and removed. To Install the 1 Secondary Container: 2 3 Carefully place bottle 18 inside the empty secondary container and place the lid of the container over the neck of the bottle. Raise the handle of the secondary container to a vertical position. This locks the container lid in place.
