ABSDA Seeks Compromise on
New Mortgage Rules
Recently, ABSDA joined forces with several of the Atlantic Provincial Home Builders Associations to write a letter to Federal Finance
Minister Bill Morneau. The content of this letter expressed our concern regarding increased stress testing for those entering the real
estate market for the first time, who have less than 20% down payment.
Many Members and others in the industry have shared
concern that this action could stall a real estate market which is
already in a vulnerable state in this region.
This is an issue which has the potential to inflict
negative consequences with respect to business. This is a classic
case where a “one size fits all approach” is not appropriate and
can indeed be quite detrimental.
A copy of this letter was also shared with area local
MP’s
While the Federal Government has proceeded with the
implementation of these rules last week we will continue to
advocate on behalf of Members on issues like this which affect
us all.

Industry News
IKO/CRC has recently re-organized its residential sales force in Atlantic Canada.
th
Following Mike LeBlanc's retirement on June 30 after a long and distinguished career of 12 years with CRC and IKO, the company
hired Jim Bursell to handle the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. "It has been a pleasure to have Mike as part of our sales team and
we wish him health and happiness in his retirement” stated Malcolm Orr, National Accounts Manager for IKO. “We also welcome Jim's
wealth of experience and extensive knowledge of the building products in the Newfoundland and Labrador market. It will be a significant
addition to our sales team,” stated Orr. “For those in the province, Jim can be reached at 709-693-9812 or at [email protected]”.
With the addition of Bursell, the company also moved to reorganize its territories in Atlantic Canada, according to Orr. Richard
Lipkus, Atlantic Sales Supervisor, will now be handling all accounts in Nova Scotia; and Shawn LeBlanc will continue to service the New
Brunswick market, but will be adding PEI to his coverage area.
“We feel that this new structure will allow us to better serve the marketplace throughout Atlantic Canada, and we’re pleased to be
in a position to undertake this move at a time when we are also adding someone of Jim’s calibre to our team,” said Orr.
Callbecks Home Hardware Building Centre has expanded to better meet the needs of the community. After months of renovations, the store
on Water Street now offers 25,000 square feet of retail space plus a brand new 6,000-square-foot warehouse. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to
celebrate the completion of the expansion project will be held on September 29 at 8:00 a.m.
“We have been a part of the Home Hardware family since the early 70’s, but we have been serving this community as a hardware
store since 1899,” explains Duane MacDonald, Dealer-Owner, Callbecks Home Hardware Building Centre. “We continue to grow and reinvent
ourselves so we can provide our customers with the exceptional service and high-quality products they’ve come to expect from Callbecks.”

Home Hardware Stores Limited has once again been
recognized as one of the most influential brands in
the country according to Canadian Business
Magazine. The list of Canada’s Top 25 Brands is
reserved for companies that connect most with their
customers.
“We are extremely proud to be recognized
as one of Canada’s top brands,” says Terry Davis,
CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. “Home
Hardware has always been focused on helping our
independent Dealer-Owners build relationships with

An online survey asked approximately 1,500
Canadians to provide their opinions on key aspects of
a company’s reputation including the quality of its
products and services, customer service, commitment
to innovation, and community involvement. A score is
then given to each brand based on the results.
