54th Massachusetts Re-enactors Presentation
Re-enactors of the 54th Massachusetts regiment will give a presentation on
the Civil War African American soldier experience. They will talk about the
uniform and the weapons of the Civil War era. They will also describe the
regiment’s experience at the siege on Fort Wagner in July 1863. Clara Barton
was there during the siege. She wrote of the 54th: “...And whenever I met
one who was giving his life out with his blood, I could not forbear hastening
to tell him lest he die in ignorance of the truth, that he was the soldier of
freedom he had sought to be, and that the world as well as heaven would so
record it and among them all.”
Author Talk on Emancipation by Historian Chandra Manning
Dr. Chandra Manning, Georgetown University history professor and author
of “What This Cruel War Was Over: Soldiers, Slavery, and the Civil War” will
present a lecture on emancipation. She will highlight the challenges freed
slaves faced in 1863 and will discuss how soldiers, slaves and other people felt
about the Emancipation Proclamation. Ms. Manning will also describe what
life was like in the slave refugee camps in Hilton Head, South Carolina where
Clara Barton worked in 1863 helping former slaves. Please call 301-320-1410 to
make a reservation for the talk.
